Yeah we saw the elk when we were in the Grand Tetons. A couple moose, too, which was cool. No grizzly bears though, sadly.

Yeah my family did a big trip a couple years ago visiting a bunch of places in the West/Midwest. I’ve also seen some just a couple hours from where I live, which is kinda unusual, but that time was probably ten years ago now.

Ok that makes sense that they’re big elk… I’m assuming around the same size as a moose? Most elk I’ve seen aren’t a whole lot bigger than deer.

Welcome back! I joined KP about… three months ago? I think? Anyway, I write primarily contemporary fiction or historical fiction, but I’ve also done some mystery and a bit of journalism. I also love hiking, and photography is one of my hobbies as well! I love encountering God in His creation, and mountains are my happy…[Read more]

Oops… said I’d find some and then forgot lol. Well, here ya go… I have a plot idea that I might not ever get to, so feel free to use them if they strike your interest.

Honestly, sometimes just stories in general — even after finishing a book, if it’s really good, I find myself going back and just thinking about the best/most emotional parts of the book over and over again, if that makes sense.
Oh yeah, it’s super easy for me to get wrapped up in reading books, too! To be fair, some books have been…[Read more]

Trailblazer replied to the topic Microsoft Word or Google Docs?? in the forum General Writing Discussions 1 year, 1 month ago
I don’t usually use Google Docs; I had to use it during my year in public school, and I’ll occasionally use it if I’m sharing with someone, but otherwise I’m not a huge fan. I don’t have Word either, I use LibreOffice, but I think it’s pretty similar to Word.

I didn’t struggle with this as much when I was younger, but now that my schedule’s gotten busier and it has come down to making choices between spending more time with God and writing, it’s gotten worse. I miss the days when I had enough time to spend an hour or more with God and then still…[Read more]

I don’t know why, but Rainier strikes me as a funny name for some reason. Love it!
I thought it would be appropriate to name an elk after a mountain, and I almost went with Shuksan, then realized Kari wouldn’t know about that mountain (since most people don’t). So Rainier it is!
The only parts of a sword I know a…[Read more]

Kari
Perched atop an elk, Kari shifted to a more comfortable position. She had taken some horseback riding lessons in fifth grade, but quit after the horse she was riding took a disliking to her and did everything in its power to buck her off. Being atop an animal again wasn’t exactly a pleasant idea, but this elk seemed to like her, and Kari had…[Read more]

He pushed aside all her ideas and concentrated, “How about something like… I dunno… Elkie?”
I don’t know why that made me laugh, but I started cracking up and had to explain to my brothers what was so funny.

I sometimes worry that I’m too attached to my writing and that it’s become an idol, or that I’m writing purely for myself and that I should be writing for God.
Ok so this is something I’ve been trying to figure out how to balance, too! On the one hand, I recognize that God has given me a gift to write, and I want to use and grow t…[Read more]

Ooooh the characters each get an elk? I love that! Now excuse me while I go think up the perfect name for Kari’s elk!
I’m going to be really sad if her elk dies.

Kari is 5’4″, slender, and fair-skinned. Her blond hair reaches just past her shoulders, and her eyes are a deep blue. She has delicate facial features (slim nose, thinner lips). She often wears jeans (at least during the colder months), with a plain shirt in either forest green, or lavender, or gray. Usually she’ll have a cardigan over that, too.…[Read more]

Sorry, I probably won’t be of much help then… sci-fi isn’t my genre of experience.

What type of setting is your character in? Or maybe a better way to phrase it, is which genre? Fantasy, sci-fi, contemporary?

“I’m not sure,” Kari replied. “I think it started sometime after the newest girl- is her name Carrie, too?- left the dining hall, but it seemed like a bunch of soldiers showed up right after the fire began, so it’s most likely that they started it to cause chaos so that we wouldn’t be able to stay organized and…[Read more]

Kari
It was a relief to be outside, away from the fire and fighting. Kari spotted Hugo and Ottoline off to one side, next to a horse (I think Marcurious was in the form of a horse most recently, am I correct? If not, @jonas can change it in the doc).
“Hugo! Ottoline! I’m glad you two are okay!” Kari called as she hurried to…[Read more]
