Thanks, @freedom. Sometimes I have to remind myself that it’s not like I’m slaying a dragon, I’m just writing a book. How dangerous can it be?

I’m working on convincing my writing to become a book and not just random scribbles. I’ll let y’all know how it goes. 🙂

Nice to meet you too, @Libby! So do you! 😊
I like to rap about whatever’s on my mind and what I’m feeling. It’s a refreshing mode of expression. 😁😎👍
What do you like to rap about?

Lately, I’ve been writing some rap lyrics. I don’t know why. I just felt like trying it, and it’s fun and therapeutic.
Still, I know very little about it, or if anything I’m writing is any good. So I was wondering if any of y’all are familiar with rap?

Mallory O'Bier replied to the topic What come to you first? Plot or Characters? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 8 months ago
I would say that usually, I get a plot idea first, then the character just naturally shows up as I’m plotting, but sometimes I do get an idea for a cool character first, and then the story plots itself around them.
So it varies.
Plot and characters (or at least, main characters) are very connected for me, though. They’re essentially…[Read more]

I love a good bromance! Frodo and Sam’s friendship is so moving. I really enjoy reading about guys’ friendships, more than I do romance. Maybe because I’m a girl and it’s more mysterious to me? I don’t know.
All I know is that there’s something awesome and powerful about it, and also vaguely incomprehensible. XD
And cool. Which reminds me, I…[Read more]

Mallory O'Bier replied to the topic Does writing energize or exhaust you? Or both? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 8 months ago
Writing energizes me and fills me with joy. I’m truly happiest when writing. I can get tired while writing, but it doesn’t usually exhaust me. It’s only really exhausting if the words or inspiration or whatever I need just isn’t flowing as it should. :/
But if I’ve turned my light off and I get a sudden spark of an idea… I may turn the light…[Read more]

Mallory O'Bier replied to the topic What is your least favorite type of hero? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 6 months ago
I think I know what you mean, @gracie-j. Good heroines are hard to find. Elizabeth Bennet is definitely one of the rare exceptions. She’s brilliantly written, and we’re the same personality type (ENTP), so it’s hard not to like her. We think too much alike. 😉
My sister is an INTJ and she likes Darcy for the same reasons. We enjoy debating and…[Read more]

Mallory O'Bier replied to the topic What is your least favorite type of hero? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 6 months ago
I think my least favorite type of hero is the chosen one. It’s pretty overdone, and at times so cliche. I don’t hate it, though.
Also, the Mary Sue hero, because it’s just really hard to relate to and like a hero that is overpowered through basically no effort of their own, always gets stronger right when they need to, and never seems to actually…[Read more]

Mallory O'Bier replied to the topic Which one of your characters would you most likely be friends with and why? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 12 months ago
In my current WIP? I can imagine being friends with at least two of my characters… possibly six of them. Maybe more. I can think of at least one I wouldn’t be friends with at all. Their personality does not mesh well with mine.
But two of them for sure. I could be best friends with at least one. 🙂

Mallory O'Bier replied to the topic TOPIC OF THE WEEK – Who is the best villain in any book/movie of all time? in the forum Start HERE 4 years, 6 months ago
Count Olaf is a pretty good villain, @erinramm. I liked him from the Netflix series.
I never really gave it much thought, but I guess I prefer the Moriarty from the books. The one from the series was alright, but I don’t even remember the one from the movies. He must not have been particularly memorable.
Honestly, I think I like the idea of…[Read more]

Thanks, @kathleenramm. 🙂
I have seen those movies, @leon-fleming, although I wasn’t thinking of them in particular when I referred to Moriarty. I was thinking of the books.
I saw the last two Disney Star Wars movies unfortunately. I skipped the most recent one. I’m not a Disney Star Wars fan. The writing is just terrible (and there’s no excuse…[Read more]

Being able to freak out an entire world of characters without ever actually being in the room? Maybe Sauron is the greatest villain of all time.
Darth Vader. Why did I not think of him before? Most iconic, in my book. He is also a good candidate.

@leon-fleming mentioned Sauron. I would say that Sauron is a brilliant example of a villain who distances himself physically from the story but is still very active within it. I often find myself marveling at this.
He acts through his minions, somehow escaping a passive role in the story despite the lack of physical presence.
Although… I guess…[Read more]

My favorite villain is probably Sydney Carton, but I’m not sure if he counts exactly.
And the six-fingered man.
Hmm… honestly the first one I thought of was Loki, but again, he’s a wishy-washy sort of villain overall. He lacks conviction.
Moriarty! Smaug! I like them too.
Mother Gothel… she was really good, I thought.
Captain Hook! Now…[Read more]

Apologies for dredging up this dinosaur, but what you described here are two examples of tropes:
Single biome planet, and Planet of the Hats.
Basically a planet that is labeled “Jungle,” “Ice,” “Rock,” “Water,” etc. is a single biome planet. Tatooine, Hoth, Felucia, Kamino, and Endor are (seemingly) examples of single biome planets.
Sometimes…[Read more] - Load More

Hi, Esther! Thanks, I appreciate the welcome! 😊 I’m glad to hear the forum is so active these days. Volleyball is cool! What position do you play? I was homeschooled too. I have a variety of hobbies, but right now I’m into archery (total beginner), watercolor painting, and walking. And I like all kinds of animals, but maybe cats the most (because…[Read more]
I play setter! Though that may change since I may be joining a new team this year. Idk yet. 🤷🏻♀️
Ooooh! Archery sounds cool!! We went to this place for my brother’s birthday in where you shoot arrows (in a variety of archery games), but obviously they are foam on the end. I was terrible at it. 😂
Watercolor painting is really neat!! I’ve done it…[Read more]
Only the nice ones. I agree with you there! How are you doing these days?
I’m doing pretty good!! School’s over, so that’s really nice. XD And summer break’s been fun. 😊 I’m going to be participating in some really fun things in June and July and I’m really excited. 😄 Plus I have a summer job, so that’s been fun. 😉
What about you?
I’m doing good! I’m working a lot between my jobs as a photographer’s assistant and a clerk at the library, and writing in between. I’m working on finishing a draft of my WIP within the next three months and getting my blog up. I’ve been writing some poetry and song lyrics too. I’m also trying to do and learn as many new things as possible because…[Read more]
