@Anne-of-lothlorien, I happen to like the Appendices quite a lot. There’s a little bit of everything in them, whether you like history (a. k. a. backstory to all your favourite characters), or essays on pipe-weed, or runes, or languages. You also get the feeling that Tolkien was letting himself play a bit more in the Appendices than in the book…[Read more]

@Emily-d, I’ve done NaNo proper once and the Camp once (and am thinking of doing it in July). In addition to what Hope and Jess have already said, I’d say to be sure your family knows what’s going on. It sounds like it should be obvious, but sometimes when you say “I’m going to be doing NaNo” they hear “I’ll be writing this month”, not necessarily…[Read more]

@that_writer_girl_99 Ooh, I know how that feels. . . I’ve done similar things before. He’s not alone! I’ll be praying it heals properly and things turn out all right.

Northerner replied to the topic Chapter Titles in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 6 months ago
It depends? I like the chapter titles in Pooh, because they help with the character of the stories. Other times they can be spoilery, like the ones in Le Morte D’Arthur. I was going to have chapter titles in two of my novels, but in revision I’m taking them out because in my case they weren’t adding anything. There were a couple of chapters where…[Read more]

@Gracie-girl, Brandon Miller has some good points (the one person who disagrees with the majority usually does), but on the whole, I’d say blogging can be good, if you keep in mind what the purpose of your blog is. As with anything that can be used, whether it’s good or bad depends largely on how you use it. Like a sword. You can use a sword to…[Read more]

I’ve never had coffee in my 19 years, but to be fair I’m still under 5 feet and not getting any taller. I do love cats, though.

@Elly, MacDonald is good. Some of his novels can get a bit preachy, but The Princess and the Goblin, Princess and Curdie,Lilith, and Phantastes are all really good. Except I’d probably recommend those last two to older people, ’cause they’re hard to get.
Oh, and I did Veritas Press’s Latin books for a year or two.

@Elly, salve! I like Plato and Lewis too. Philosophy is one of my hobbies, along with impromptu debates. Have you read any George MacDonald?

@GracieGirl, Wingfeather Saga. Really good villain with really good motivations, and really good death scene.
Also in the Wingfeather Saga, a really really really good disguised villain. You love him up until he’s revealed and then you want to kill him in horrible ways for all the evil he’s done while making people think he’s good. Oof. Traitors.…[Read more] -

Oooh @Daeus, that sounds like lots of fun! In my time-travel novel the protagonist has to consider going to the future and getting modern weapons with which to defeat a bad guy, but she decides against it on account of it not being honourable. I’m guessing you have plenty to say on that subject :).
Also, that’s really fast. I think, outside of…[Read more] -

Hi!
It happens to me an awful lot where I’ll get a big, vague idea of a story, with none of the supporting details, some grand scheme of things with no legs to stand on. What I try to do (not being a plotter at all) is find out where and how the story starts. Where doesn’t necessarily mean geographical location, though you have that, but at what…[Read more]

@f5a8c3e92 that’s splendid that you got baptized on Easter! Was it a coincidence or is that a tradition in your church? (In mine we had five people baptized on Palm Sunday — that was a lot of puddles on the floor afterward.)
Also, I’m INTP, but I totally sympathize about the hugs. My sister can climb all over me, but she’s about the only one.…[Read more]

@Kate-flournoy, I was going to ask how it went. Now I’m curious what the song was — older songs are more likely to be ones I like than new ones. But I suppose I should ask first “How old is old?”
@That-writer-girl-99, I can’t read music either, and I’m in the church choir. I understand the difficulty. My sister got all the musical talent,…[Read more]

@Daeus, would you like to defend your claim? Or perhaps the blame should be on @Dragon-snapper, for arranging it. (And I think Daeus as king works, in the story, better than Josiah as king. Because if Josiah were king, Daniel would be the evil brother who usurps the throne.)

@feedingmygoldfish, I like Amy Lowell too, what little I’ve read of her. I sympathize about the community college’s lack of options. I started at one of those, got fed up with it (apparently a home-schooler’s standards are way too high for American educational systems to satisfy), and started at another college that was closer to liberal…[Read more]

@PrincessFoo, that was one of the first things I thought to check. . . no luck. It had everything up until the place I stopped at the night before, but nothing from that day. Which did mean I only lost 3,000 words instead of 15,000, but still.
@Emma-Flournoy, I have so far managed to evade the bear. He may be catching up, though, as I discovered I…[Read more] - Load More
