@not-so-secret-secret-assassin Fullmetal Alchemist is so good! I was just thinking about it this morning, haha…
@kathleenramm Something similar to that; In Silver Spoon, by the same author as FMA, the main character Hachiken Yuugo has a pretty compelling backstory. At the start of the series we see that he’s come to farming school as an escape,…[Read more]

@Kathleen
I personally think that Edward and Alphonse from Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood had a pretty epic backstory (it was pretty epic) one of them lost an arm and a leg, and da other lost their whooole body (it was pretty bloody and epic, if I do say so myself)
They also have blonde hair, and as a blonde hair user myself, i must say I can…[Read more]

“What’s your favorite Backstory?”
I’m going to risk sounding like a broken record and say Zuko from ATLA.(I seriously need to expand my consumption of fiction so I can find a new favorite and use something else as answers.)
I really love backstories that have direct consequences on the main plot and also help you understand why the character…[Read more]

Lin replied to the topic Adopting Description? in the forum General Writing Discussions 4 years, 10 months ago
@typewriter77 Well, are phrases like “she ran like the wind” or “the apple of one’s eye” or “it was a dark and stormy night” copyrighted? Often these things become clichés because they are so frequently used. I don’t believe that three words like so would be exactly plagiarism. However, if you were truly worried about that, I would study sentence…[Read more]

Kathleen replied to the topic What's your favorite type of villain? in the forum Topic of the Week 4 years, 10 months ago
As much as I love complex backstories, I totally understand what you mean by big-bad-powerful villains. They feel so strong and powerful like if they say they rule the world, you’d believe it.
Because they are so much more memorable. And it forces the protagonist to grow and become stronger to defeat them.
I love what…[Read more]

So much yes on character who don’t feel like they were solely made for the plot! Those are my favorite kind characters whether they are a villains or any other type of character.
(Oh, and your not the only one who had their day made by the Shrek joke by @not-so-secret-secret-assassin haha. XD)
People don’t talk…[Read more]

@typewriter77 Well, I’m afraid that I’m the type of person who doesn’t know what their own theme is until someone explicitly tells them. I’m that clueless and unprepared, usually. And to me, usually in good literature themes are hard to pick out clearly, but you can feel that it’s there.
I think that each scene and character could show a facet of…[Read more]
