“Ghosts can walk, although they cannot leave footprints. It might be a Neighbor, taking hold of a physical vessel. But that is unlikely. It is most likely a machine.”

Moth stopped short. “Ah, I remember. I saw a machine yesterday night.”

Ellis hesitated for a moment, watching the bird, before jogging to catch up with Moth. When the two were walking side by side, he asked, “How can something that’s not living walk?”

Moth collected some of the cotton-like fluff from the reeds and made a palm-sized nest on the ground. He laid the bird there. Then he started walking, speeding up to a quick stride. “You coming, Stormwatcher?”

Ellis swallowed his discomfort and looked in the direction the footsteps were heading. After the wet, marshy area, the ground sloped back up into a grassy field. Beyond that were trees, tall and shady. They seemed to mark the edge of the school grounds.

“The trail ends here, but we know which direction it was going.”

Not to mention he’s been abused by the people of his own home that he’s more willing to trust a complete stranger not from the island than a villager from it.

Yeah that makes sense.

Moth stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the bird’s body. He picked it up and cradled it to his chest, brushing its head feathers with his fingers. The poor thing was still warm.
