Moth stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the bird’s body. He picked it up and cradled it to his chest, brushing its head feathers with his fingers. The poor thing was still warm.

“I’m sorry,” Ellis said softly. He lifted a hand as if to touch the bird, then let it fall back to his side. “Maybe it got stuck in the reeds.” It was a flimsy explanation, but he didn’t know what else to say.

Ellis voice had grown a touch uncomfortable. His eyes, which had glowed icy blue a minute ago, were scanning the reeds.
He could be right. This was just how nature worked. But the bird might have been killed unnaturally.
Moth went back to studying the trail.
There was an idea in the back of his head. It wasn’t forming into a picture yet. Where had he seen a walking, unnatural thing before?
“I want to find this thing.”

Ellis swallowed his discomfort and looked in the direction the footsteps were heading. After the wet, marshy area, the ground sloped back up into a grassy field. Beyond that were trees, tall and shady. They seemed to mark the edge of the school grounds.
“The trail ends here, but we know which direction it was going.”

Moth collected some of the cotton-like fluff from the reeds and made a palm-sized nest on the ground. He laid the bird there. Then he started walking, speeding up to a quick stride. “You coming, Stormwatcher?”

Ellis hesitated for a moment, watching the bird, before jogging to catch up with Moth. When the two were walking side by side, he asked, “How can something that’s not living walk?”

I’m thinking they can do what most boys do when one starts running. XD
Wilhelm is fast in an ordinary sort of way. His best strength is endurance rather than speed. And of course, Wolfgang is Roadrunner. XD

He ran to catch up with Wolfgang, who was already halfway down the path. His friend only run harder.
The race was most definitely on.
The boys fly down toward the Gymnasium. Wolfgang had a strong lead and would probably reach the doors first, but it wouldn’t be by much. Wilhelm smiled as the wind slapped at his gambeson. This was delicious.

The view through the windows was, as always, somewhat uninspiring. Still, it felt better to be able to see outside.
Arileaned forward a bit. His feet dangled a few inches below a handhold and twenty feet above a slightly balding head. The safety supervisor hadn’t noticed him yet. Ari shrugged and looked back out the high windows.
Choir had been moved to later that evening. Annoying, that. One of the only class he really cared about and they had to shove it all the way till after dinner. His shoulders slumped a bit.
At least hand-to-hand was on schedule.
A cup of tea is cheaper than therapy.

Moth stopped short. “Ah, I remember. I saw a machine yesterday night.”
