      Moth

“That’s wicked,” Moth breathed. “Can you see someone’s fate just by looking at him?”

@whalekeeper thanks. My phone was telling me a pell was a sheet of paper, which made no sense in this context.

          Ellis

“No. It’s more… spontaneous than that. I know nothing about your fate.”

The path sloped downward into a small, marshy area, surrounded by waist-high reeds. As Ellis stepped around a muddy patch, he noticed something. Several large footprints, made by someone large and heavy, went across the path and disappeared in the reeds. Ellis paused and looked at them curiously.

I was thinking they’re just walking a path around the school and they’ll arrive at the gym whenever we want

                Moth

“That is a great gift, nevertheless. You are fortunate to have your own family line to guide you. A forecaster…” The Shaffers had once shown Moth a weather forecast. It seemed such a hard thing to predict when storms were born. The weather of wild human spirits must be even harder to predict.

Moth held both his arms out from his body, and brushed his hands through the reeds. Their fluffy heads – ripe with autumn seeds – tickled his fingers.

Ellis seemed distracted. He was studying a trail of footprints in the wet earth.

The footprints probably belonged to heavy-set gardener. But they didn’t follow the main path, and instead made their own path through the reeds. Perhaps that was abnormal.

Moth crouched over the prints and bowed his head. His white antennae rose out of his hair, and twitched here and there, searching for the scent of a soul. “Hm. These marks were not made by a living body.”

Well… I assume the prints belong to the SIAS unit. @loopylin please correct me if I’m wrong, and I’ll change what Moth said

                      Wilhelm

“Well,” Wilhelm glanced back at his friend. “We could race. My daily exercise usually begins with a lap around the training ground.”

After a run, he would face an hour at the pells, then an hour on horseback, then whatever grappling or wrestling his father had set for the squires that day before they were turned over to the tutors.

Only, his father was still at home. Wilhelm swallowed back a wave of apprehension.

“Here’s the door. We shall see what feats this school expects of us.”

The path outside was shaded and green. Wilhelm stood for a moment, lost. There was an impressive building before them. Impossibly large windows let light into the place, but were too high in the wall for any of the activities inside to be seen from without. It wasn’t until the faint sound of organized chaos soaked through his bewilderment that Wilhelm realized what he was seeing.

                      “A gymnasium.”

                        @whalekeeper no you’re right

                        Ellis

Ellis’ eyebrows raised in surprise. He studied the prints closer.

                        “What does that mean?”

At first he had just been mildly curious. He wanted to know what kind of shoes they were. Now he didn’t know what to think.

                          Moth

”I don’t know.” Moth shrugged. “I’m not very good at distinguishing between levels of being. This thing with feet might have a soul, but it has no organic body.”

                            Wolfgang

he raced forward. “I love gymnasiums! Come on! This will be great!”

Can Moth sense other things like fairy vs human souls? I’m curious about his abilities now

                              Ellis

Now even more curious, Ellis waded into the reeds, following the prints off the path. They continued in the mud for a couple yards, before the ground began too wet and the trail disappeared. Ellis looked down at where he thought the last visible footprint was, and paused as he noticed something else. There, at his feet, lying completely still in the mud, was a dead bird.

For a second, the world around Ellis vanished. He was looking down at a new set of footprints in the snow. They were barefoot and small like a child’s. He looked down at his own feet. They were big and metal, and one was broken and twisted to the side. He took a step forward, then dragged the bad foot behind him. He was following the trail into the woods.

Ellis came back to reality, thankfully not face down in the mud. He had a bad feeling in his stomach. He swallowed and looked at Moth.

                              “We should leave.”

(This feels unnecessarily dramatic but I wanted to do something fun)

(Moth would have seen Ellis tense up for a couple seconds and his eyes flash a bright blue.)

                                  I’m so invested. I have a theory

Can Moth sense other things like fairy vs human souls? I’m curious about his abilities now

Moth antennae are really cool in regular nature. They have a great sense of smell and they can track down other moths. The idea here is that Moth can smell both physical scents and the ‘scents’ of souls (since some beings in his world don’t have physical bodies). Scents can wash or fade away, but souls leave paths that last longer.

That’s why he can be a nomad prince. Travelling the world, all by his lonesome, is a huge part of his character.

The ability is a little OP, but he isn’t perfect at tracking people. I doubt he would be able to track down any of the other boys yet, if they went missing. He would have to spend some more days with them and deliberately make a note of what they smell like/what their souls feel like.
