R.M. Archer replied to the topic How to know if your book should be a standalone or series? in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 1 month ago
I’m going to disagree with this point, actually. I think that 1) if your characters carry through a series that begins with them at a certain age, your readers will follow them through that and may even go through that growth with the characters. Take Harry Potter, for example. I’m not a fan of HP, personally, but plenty of kids “grew up with”…[Read more]

I really just second what everyone else is saying!! For me, it depends a lot on what genre it is and how the story ends. So for a fantasy novel, I’m gonna really highly consider a series since it’s common for the genre, but for my contemporary romance novel I’m writing, I’ve been going back and forth over if I want to do one or not.…[Read more]

@joy-caroline I guess it would be if you feel like more needs to be told about the character or the world. Or maybe if the overall story plot needs more room than one book.
I’ll give some examples. For my spy novel, The Black Cat, I feel like one book is not enough to explore my MC. It needs more than one novel to show Delano growing as a…[Read more]

@kathleenramm I’m not sure if I’ve ever read something and thought, “That was strange.” But if I had to choose one I would choose Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? I was pretty confused throughout it, haha. I like it ok, but definitely not my favorite. Fahrenheit 451 all the way. Also, the way I read the synopsis and the way I thought that t…[Read more]

Me: I want to write a five part series. Let me come up with enough plot to fill it.
Also me: This plot idea feels like it’s gonna be a three part series.
That’s basically it haha. Depends on how much plot idea you have.

Basically what @elfwing said. If there’s more story to be told than can reasonably be done in one book, it ought to be a series. I had one planned standalone that ended up turning into a duology because a whole additional plot showed up, as a background thing in the first book but begging to be the focal point of a sequel
I’ve had other series…[Read more]

@jodi-maile So sorry for being late, but I completely relate to you about the tone struggles, since I’m having them for one of my current works. I guess what I would say is either:
a) leave it alone for a very long time and start anew or something at some point
b) finish it, decide what you like or don’t like about it, and restart
c) leave it…[Read more]

Katherine replied to the topic Have you ever written a story with multiple POV? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 2 months ago
Yes, actually I have written a story with multiple POVs. I did it for my fantasy novel, Behind the Blade, Without the Wings. I switched POVs between the male and female lead. After doing that, I realized that I really like writing multiple POVs, so when I came back to my spy novel, I decided to have multiple POVs in it as well.

@kathleenramm I usually write in several POVs! I like to give insight in what happens to each person, and since usually they aren’t around each other, also shed light on other things that happen in entwining storylines.
