Sarah Hoven replied to the topic Building Characters Inside-Out in the forum General Writing Discussions 10 years, 1 month ago
Thanks, Kate and Daeus! I do need to spend more time visualizing my characters.
I think I see what my problem is. I’ve been thinking of my character as a bunch of puzzle pieces (flaws, traits, worldview etc.) to be fitted together, instead of as a person. No wonder they are such a mess! Thank you for helping me see that.
I was wondering how to…[Read more] -
Sarah Hoven replied to the topic How fast do you read? in the forum General Writing Discussions 10 years, 2 months ago
Everybody says I read fast, and I don’t think I miss anything major. But, despite my high aspirations, I’m not yet much of a writer. So don’t let me mess up your theory. 🙂

That’s okay. 🙂 I write best when I don’t try to structure it, but I wasn’t sure if that was okay. It’s nice to know I’m not the only writer like that.

I’m trying to figure out how to balance history with fiction in my writing. I have a general idea of what is okay to fictionalize and what is not (for example, I think it would be okay to have my character replace a leading officer and make a critical decision at the battle of Yorktown, but it would not be okay to have him kill all the British…[Read more]

Thank you so much, Kate! That is very helpful. I never thought about quirks being different from personality, but you’re right. I’m realizing that all my main characters are basically me, plus some embellishments. Which means they are just about identical on the inside. 🙁 I’ll have to fix that somehow.
Does a character have to have a major flaw…[Read more] -

So my point is, don’t assign your characters personality traits from the outside and expect those traits to work inward. You have to take the human core, and build on it from the inside out.
@Kate-Flournoy – This is a little off topic, but would you please tell me how exactly you do that? Right now I’m revisiting my first tangled attempt at a n…[Read more]

@faithdk – Wow, you’ve been published three times? That’s awesome! Congratulations! How did you structure your articles? I’m still trying to figure article structure out. 🙂

Hi Levi! I’m sorry it took me so long to get back to you.
I noticed that you made a distinction between “real” wizards and fantasy ones, “real” witches and fantasy ones, etc. It seems like you believe that they are evil in the real world, but not necessarily so in fantasy. I can’t agree with you there. They are the servants of Satan, and it…[Read more] -

Verse 3 flows much better now, without the “the”s. I actually liked the original verse 1, because it sounded very mysterious, but that’s just me. 🙂

They surveyed the mess in dismay. There was paint everywhere- splashed on the walls, swirling on the floor, running in sluggish rivulets down the marble steps. Nobody leaned over the railing of the balcony and spotted the paint bucket lying in the corner far below. “Somebody should clean that up.”
Somebody stiffened. “Everybody should help! I…[Read more] -

Tonight I was telling my little brother Bible stories, and he asked me to tell him Fiery Daniel. I told him that I didn’t know that story, so he informed me that it was a “very New Testament story.” Then he told it to me, and it was hilarious. I guess he got his Bible stories mixed up. Here it is:
“Daniel came to the prison where Peter was, and…[Read more] -

Taken from The Unwritten Adventures of X and Y
“You’re crazy.”
“No– just desperate.”
“Really? I couldn’t tell.”
“Can you think of a better way to escape?”
Y eyed his comrade in espionage with disgust. “But– through the torpedo tube? You can’t be serious.”
“We can’t risk capture, and that’s exactly what will happen if we don’t get off this…[Read more] - Load More
