Little Brown Dog replied to the topic When Good Guys Act Like Villains in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years ago
ok thank you @hope . The problem sort of arose because he originally had one character arc where he became a traitor, but then his author (me of course :P) changed it and he eventually became a more likable character. But the event of his interrogation of Piper was a bit of a catalyst for some of the plot and the character arcs…

So there was a question in the comments of @Hope‘s article ‘Focused Hues’ about whether or not it’s acceptable for a non-villain to practice torture.
Obviously not just because they’re mean and like it, but because they need info and torture is the surest (or the only) way to obtain it.
So what do you think? What does the Bible say about this?

Kate Flournoy replied to the topic Cliffhangers and Cliched Titles in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years ago
Good thoughts, @hope!
@Daeus, it sounds like you might be talking about ending on a cliffhanger right in the middle of an action scene. That’s probably not a good idea, because everything has been going at such a fast pace that an end will fall on you like a thunderclap and leave you screaming without any motivation to go on. Because, if anyone…[Read more]

Kate Flournoy replied to the topic Why do you write? in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 1 month ago
@writefury— yes! Absolutely! The people inside my head are too awesome to ignore. 😀
@Hope— I also write because I have difficulty finding the kind of stuff I want to read. What better solution?
@the-happy-bookaholic— thought you’d like to know, Sarah, that knowing you’re on this forum has more than once made me triple proofread my posts…[Read more]

@Hope I’ve read the Wingfeather Saga but I didn’t cry at the end. Personally I didn’t like the protagonist and found him rather irritating…but the plot was good. Writing style and grammar not excellent, but the plot was admittedly riveting and very complex.
@Kate I only JUST finished the Lord of the Rings last week and now I’m a new fan. I’m…[Read more]

@writefury Thank you, Rosey! lol! Yeah, that thought has crossed my mind. I’ll have to think about a good way to change it… Maybe I can add a footnote. “Check out John Flanagan’s “rangers”” 😀
@hope Thanks!! Gotcha, I’ll work on that. 🙂 And fabulous! I shall also follow you on the pinterest things. 🙂 (Yassssss! Hot chocolate for the win!)

Once again, thank you all for all the helpful replies!
@Rosey: I suppose switching the characters once in a while would work. There’s just one problem with that. She’s alone a lot of the time in the book. There isn’t one constant character with her. She has friends with her in the beginning and end, but in the middle it’s mostly just her. It’s…[Read more]

Ivy Rose replied to the topic 1st person or 3rd person? in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 1 month ago
Like Kate, I prefer reading and writing in 3rd person. For me, I feel more connected to the character when reading in 3rd person (though that really doesn’t make much sense…). I love the “big picture” sensation that 3rd person brings. 1st person, to me, feels slightly jumpy and unnatural, but that is purely my personal opinion. 🙂
That said,…[Read more]

Kate Flournoy replied to the topic Love Stories in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 1 month ago
@Rosey—yes, I agree. There should probably be in most cases a long prior acquaintance before anything gets serious. We covered this on the unrealistic romance topic, but I’ll say it again— we established that there is no such thing as love at first sight, only love and first acquaintance, and that is rare. It only happens when the two people…[Read more]

@Hope — Dudette, that one is pretty deep. I’m sitting here thinking through it (which for me is the sign of a good poem). I always want to leave the reader with something to puzzle out or think on (again, that’s just me. :P) I definitely like poem as a whole. It reads a little bit choppily, but I think that helps to give this impression of two…[Read more]

Once again I’m slow on replying. Sorry about that!
@TheHappyBookaholic,
I totally understand about not picking up random library books… I haven’t been in a while but when I did I was very cautious. I have read the Emily of New Moon trilogy, it has been a few years, but I remember some stuff about them. Did you read the Storygirl?

@Rosey— yes! My siblings and I do that ALL THE TIME! When I first started writing it was just me all alone in my family, and no one else really interested in it (thinking, no doubt, ‘Oh boy, another one of Kate’s crazy projects— it’ll blow over in time’ 😀 ) but now that the novels have been getting progressively higher quality, we can talk…[Read more]

Kate Flournoy replied to the topic Fantastical Creatures in the forum Fantasy 9 years, 1 month ago
@Hope— yes, there does seem to be a trend towards good dragons. Because first there was a trend for bad dragons… and then people started trying to break the cliche… and now that is becoming cliche… so I guess you could say my dragons are bad in anticipation of the flipping of the cliche again. 😛
Okay— not really.

Kate Flournoy replied to the topic In OUR World? Are you JOKING? in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 1 month ago
@Hope— but I would consider time travel a technological achievement, not magic.
And with the characters coming alive and yelling at their author… take it from an expert… that stuff really happens. Believe me. I know what I’m talking about. 😛
A story like that could just be told from the perspective of the crazy author whose characters are…[Read more] -

Hi everyone!
My name is Ivy and I am a seventeen-year-old homeschool student. I’ve been ‘officially’ writing since I was seven (meaning I wrote stories myself in notebooks), but my parents tell me that I was concocting little stories long before then. My mom blessed me greatly by teaching me to read at age three, and I’ve never stopped! I love…[Read more]
