Hope Ann replied to the topic Structure and Character Arcs in the forum Characters 8 years, 2 months ago
I don’t really know the names of structures. I don’t intentionally follow a structure, I just build up a story so it feels right with a beginning, middle, and end. Actually, there are two parts to the middle (or can be). The reactive stage, where the character is reacting with surroundings, then the proactive stage when the character starts to…[Read more]

@julia-r So you approve of shape-shifting? *wags eyebrows* Some readers don’t, but I’ve used it in one fantasy story so far. I’d love to do a dragon/person shapeshifter sometime, though that’s been done before in more than one place. My own shapeshifter was a bit…subtler. 😉
@Jess, well, everyone else has been asking plenty of valid questions,…[Read more]

Also, for those of you who expressed interest in Fidelyon (@dragon-snapper, @daeus …@anyoneelse) I am excited to announce that I’m opening the novella for beta reading. If you’d like to see my ‘final’ blurb (thanks again everyone for your help) and are interest in details or in beta reading the novel, you can check it out and sign-up on my blog here! 😀

@anna-brie Sorry, I just realized I never replied to you. *sheepish grin* I’m hoping to traditionally published…hopefully at Enclave. Though if that doesn’t work, I will publish myself. But even if a publisher does write a blurb for me (which I’d love) I like to have my own for blog work and stuff.

@overcomer I have a blog and I really enjoy blogging. I think they are a fun way for readers to follow writers and for writers to connect, but I don’t think one has to have a regular blog. I do think it’s a good idea for a writer to have somewhere they can post occasionally about what they are doing though. And there is something to be said for…[Read more]

The book sounds interesting, though everyone has pretty much beat me to what I’d say… Experiments of some kind which are why the kids have the abilities they have. If you connect the abilities to one thing, that might be easier…have you read Michael Vey? The writing in some of the last books is awful, but the story itself is pretty good,…[Read more]

*shakes head* Promotion accepted, I guess.
The other day I posted a picture on twitter of my feet…I’d traced my veins I could see with a felted pen (I had a novella to rework and didn’t want to do it. It was only natural to turn my pen elsewhere) and got a reply ‘when you pick up a pen to write, but it’s all in vein’. I’m still not sure what I…[Read more]

Welcome, @luke-c! It’s the sad truth, @daeus is pretty much the only active writer on the male side here. Not sure how that happened… But as a female who tries to write from a male pov, it’s nice to be able to get input from other men and, anyway…here https://kingdompen.org/forums/topic/men-verses-woman/ *thrusts link at you* Daeus has been a…[Read more]

@Daeus I think the omniscient pov is one of the hardest to do. It can be done well but, like you said, it can be harder to create stronger characters. Another thing which can be hard and annoying if not done right in the omniscient view (I don’t know if your story does it or not; I just started…but some published books I’ve read do this) is the…[Read more]

A little late, but better late than never, so welcome, @Julia-r *Grins* *waves* cliches are fun…well, making fun of them is fun. I do that on my blog occasionally with the ‘real story’ of what villains or heroes really think. But it’s easier to make fun of them than to actually apply it in writing. 😉

@his-instrument I can’t generalize everyone and say for sure, but I know with my father and brothers, they are much more likely to try to figure out something like directions themselves, while us girls will stop and call home for directions, or would go ask someone much sooner than they would. I wouldn’t go so far as to say they hate asking for…[Read more]

Hope Ann replied to the topic How naming affects characterization in the forum Characters 8 years, 2 months ago
Villain names tend to have v, x, r, or M…but not always. And I love s, t, e, and a names for a hero. Though, again, not always. It just…a sound to a name. It sounds strong and determined, like Ethaniel. ;D or Torin. Or it might sound playful, like Jathan.
And I do that too with so many of the names, @gretald, @kate-flournoy! There are…[Read more]

Hope Ann replied to the topic Play-writing vs. General Writing in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 2 months ago
I’ve written some scripts for my siblings and I. With dialogue, try to picture someone saying it. Preferably the people who are going to be acting the part. Some lines sound cool in writing, but when it came time for them to be spoken, it just wouldn’t work. And it depends on the quality of the actors. There were some things I knew my siblings…[Read more]
