@daeus Have you seen Rogue One yet? It’s even at the library now, so you have no excuse. Unless you’re busy, because that’s always a pretty good excuse. But seriously, find time.
I didn’t tag you in my last post because I talked about those characters who are now unfortunately deceased, and if you haven’t seen it, you don’t want to know which…[Read more] -

Okay, so I’m only, like, what– five months late? How did I miss this thread?
I liked Rogue One. A lot. One of my friends spoiled it for me though by telling me “Everybody dies” before I watched it (this is the same friend who told me that you-know-who kicks the bucket in Episode VII– both spoilers by complete accident). It helped me emotionally…[Read more] -

Hi guys.
So I read the book version of Ben-Hur when I was about twelve. I had not yet read Les Miserables, and was way overwhelmed by the descriptions. After chapter ten or so, I was really only in it for the chariot race.
Looking back, I realize it’s an amazing story, and I would probably appreciate the descriptions much more now that I’m…[Read more] -

And, as an aside, what did y’all think about Rogue One? -

I confess, those were two strange concepts to join with a slash in the topic line, there. And this also has nothing to do with writing, but everything to do with young people, so yeah.
Anyway.
A couple of you (primarily the Ohioans) heard from me a while ago about a young people’s worship night that is going on on May 19th. Some of my friends and…[Read more] -

@Daeus maybe ask Amy Green, a friend of mine, to share it on her blog, https://themondayheretic.wordpress.com/author/amygreenbooks/
She is an author as well (she wrote the Amarias Adventures, which are FANTASTIC reads! Go read them. Now.) and loves books! Her blog has a pretty good following.
I will also send this survey out to all of my…[Read more] -

@daeus I love that idea! I’ll be praying about that, and I’d appreciate it if you could pray about it, too. I may see if we can livestream this worship night, so that other people who are interested in hosting can get an idea of what’s going on. We do feel like this is not just a one-time, one-place thing– Everblaze is a movement of young people…[Read more]

Hello Ohioans (@gretald @ingridrd @daeus @winter-rose @levipierpont),
Okay, so I realize y’all in kingdoms (ahem… cities, that is) far far away, but I’m going to put another invitation out here. And I’m even more excited about this than the Writer’s Gathering, so if you can’t make it, I understand, but if you can, EXCELLENT.
A group of friends…[Read more] -

@dragon-snapper Way to use a LOTR quote! Bonus points for you!
@jason Sounds like a fascinating story idea! I did something similar, where I had a whole group of characters with fantastic “gifts.” Most of the gifted people were “good guys,” but one of those who received a gift was a callous army commander who inflicted punishment, even death,…[Read more] -
Hannah R. replied to the topic How naming affects characterization in the forum Characters 7 years, 8 months ago
@ethryndal There have actually been times when I’ve just typed random letters and come up with names. Example: when I can’t think of anything to write (which does happen on rare occasions), my fingers usually fall in the nonsense pattern weioth. So I named a character Weioth.
@delightinlife I’ll get that fire list to you if I can find it. 🙂 -
Hannah R. replied to the topic Writing Dares! in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 8 months ago
@jason Are you looking for a genre-specific dare? I can give you some suggestions. You by no means “have to” do any of these.
1) Take a cliche (like the classic “we’re going to be poisoned by this dude who just put something in our food” or “we’re enemies but now we’re falling in love” or “I’m a superhero so I’m just awesome, no questions asked”…[Read more] -

@jason I like the idea of names like Blue Thrush and Red Leaf. You’ll want to be careful not to make them sound like Native American names (not that all Native Americans have names like that, just that that is what a lot of people associate with them), and I think combining them into one word would be a good way to do that. Shakespeare had some…[Read more]

@rachelle
I really like this idea. If you want to hint at your theme early on, maybe you can just use foreshadowing– events or random thoughts that have a meaning, but the MC doesn’t realize it yet. But I don’t think it’s completely necessary to reveal the theme right away, since the question of justice will come about pretty quickly, and…[Read more] -

Oh, and @emma-flournoy, I do like Enjorlas. I thought he was a brilliant addition to the book. Very brave and passionate, but level-headed, too– a perfect contrast to Marius’ absent-minded dreaminess. I was very upset (and proud of him) when he died. They took him out of the movie too. But he was in the musical, and he was probably the…[Read more]

WAAHHHH! There’s no Eponine in the Liam Neeson version of the movie! I’m so distraught! (I literally just finished watching it. Liam Neeson did a fantastic job, but there was SO MUCH missing…) And Jean Valjean didn’t even DIE at the end. WHAT???
Sorry. (*pants and tries to compose herself*) I should know by now that movies aren’t always like the…[Read more] -

@graciegirl Yes! Linguine to Remmi. One of Pixar’s finest. Which is saying something, because Pixar’s pretty fine overall.
