Just as a quick note, it is technically breaking the law to use a fake address for a mailing list. I like the idea of doing a forwarding address like Daeus recommends (and yes; you probably won’t even get any mail), but I would not recommend making one up.

1. What kind of magazines are you looking for? Art magazines? Writing magazines? Fiction magazines? Something else? The Christian Writers Market Guide has a great index of different publications to submit to if you’re looking for options.
2. The internet is great for this. Figure out who your ideal audience is (age, gender, interests, passions)…[Read more]

@mark-kamibaya had a great thread on sci-fi a while back that touched on a lot of cliches… Well-worth reading:Â https://kingdompen.org/forums/topic/beginners-tips-for-writing-science-fiction/

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Would someone please tell me if these first chapters are too depressing? in the forum Novel Critique Requests 6 years, 11 months ago
Identical thoughts to @daeus Good premise, and if the entire story isn’t going to be as dark in the first chapters, you just want to include enough glimpses of light to indicate that. I don’t personally have a problem with dark, depressing stories when there’s a point to them, but you don’t want to unintentionally indicate that’s the type of story…[Read more]

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Hi, I'm GabbyJ! in the forum Start HERE 6 years, 11 months ago
@gabbyj I did–it was a great experience! It worked quite differently then than I believe it does now, but I learned a lot of Scripture passages through that and grew a lot because of it over these three years.
That’s great that you’ve been able to discover new authors through our interviews. 😀 I’m thrilled that we’re able to interview so many…[Read more]

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Succession House Question in the forum General Writing Discussions 6 years, 11 months ago
@sleepwalkingmk Great question. I believe the details are currently being kept under-wraps, so to learn what Succession House is looking for, email Christy at cjsomerville@gmail.com. She’s pretty easy to talk to and will let you know what kind of auditions she’s looking for and what the contest will be like.

Welcome to the site @gabbyj! Love your profile pic. 🙂 I did the Bible Bee for the first four years of the competition but then graduated out of it when I left high school. xD
Who are your favorite fantasy authors?

Welcome to the site @singforjoy! Glad you found us. 🙂 I’m also a big fantasy fan and love listening to music soundtracks. My favorite is probably the Batman v Superman soundtrack (bad movie; fantastic music), but Winter Soldier and Chronicles of Narnia are both great soundtracks.

Hey @marliscarb! Welcome to the forum as one of our few non-fiction writers. 🙂 What book would you say has been most influential for you in your Christian walk (excepting the Bible)?

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic In the beginning…. in the forum General Writing Discussions 6 years, 11 months ago
@amy-l-klob I’d recommend starting by introducing your protagonist, but I would be careful about having a slow lead-in to the actual story. You want to grab the audience’s attention in the first page. That doesn’t mean you need to immediately leap into the main plot of your novel, but you should be including some conflict and/or intrigue that…[Read more]

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Does it Have to be Long? in the forum Plotting 6 years, 11 months ago
@sam-kowal Yeah, Dalinar’s character arc was amazing. Didn’t think Sanderson could top Kaladin’s in WoR, but he pretty much matched it. Yeah, Adolin seemed to get away with that, and I was also looking for some closure on the moral questions being raised regarding the morality of war. I suspect, though, that Sanderson at least plans on continuing…[Read more]

For a first time author, avoid going over 120k; 130k max if you absolutely have to. Once you become published, you can push the limit more (I just finished a 450k fantasy work that topped the NY bestselling list), but publishers aren’t willing to risk those sorts of word counts for unpublished authors.

@sleepwalkingmk I think that’s a really good idea. Three EiLs are hard to fit into one book, so splitting it into two books seems like a wise move!
