You know you’re a writer when you go on vacation telling yourself that you have enough stories to work on and WILL NOT get ANY new inspiration for a new story while on vacation…and you come back home with the perfect story idea completely planned out in detail and 2,000 words into the first draft.
You know you’re a writer when your doctor tells…[Read more]

@Kate
YES. Totally! It’s like your own personal fanbase. 😉 My 10 year old brother seems to be my agent. He’s constantly saying I should get my books into Costco and all the libraries. To quote him: “Why go through all the little stores first? More people go to Costco!”You know you’re a writer when all your little brothers come to your for help…[Read more]

Right! Exactly. I think the thing is just to give their thoughts enough of an odd, twisted, different feel, that you kinda get the idea of what they look like just from being inside their minds. Also you could write a vain dragon— always preening over their beautiful scales, their wings, their tail, their claws… actually it would be pretty fun…[Read more]

I agree, Hope. There isn’t a difference that I’m aware of.
I don’t think you should probably use an assassination to start off a rebellion though, just because assassination without declared war is little more than murder.

Yes, definitely. Not a whole lot of foreshadowing with anything— a few vague, disquieting hints here and there, but otherwise you’re left on your own and the discovery is all yours when it comes.

@Rosey— yes! My siblings and I do that ALL THE TIME! When I first started writing it was just me all alone in my family, and no one else really interested in it (thinking, no doubt, ‘Oh boy, another one of Kate’s crazy projects— it’ll blow over in time’ 😀 ) but now that the novels have been getting progressively higher quality, we can talk…[Read more]

And, for the writers and readers here (basically, everyone) this one is so good.

I love Doctor Who; I’ve seen all the new ones…and while we’re on the topic, here’s a Studio C ‘deleted scene’ of Doctor Who.

You know you’re a writer when you rewrite books you are reading in your mind.
Whew. I was starting to worry that I might not be a writer, but I do that quite often.I do this all the time. There are books I used to like, but as I read them again, I can’t enjoy them as much. Like Michael Vey. I was only 16 when the first book came out and I l…[Read more]

While at war, I think it would be fine to assassinate an enemy general/soldier/etc. It is war; death is part of war. What is the difference between killing on the battlefield, in a secret mission, while taking out a sentry, or from the top of a building while the man (or woman) is riding in a car. I do not, however, think killing noncombatants…[Read more]

You also know you’re a writer when sudden depletions of the pantry happen to coincide with long periods you spend in front of your laptop.

@kate-flournoy Yes, I have read The Griffin and the Minor Canon…it was pretty amusing. 🙂
I think…I think I did write a story from a dragon’s POV. Or at least part of it was from her POV. It’s been awhile, and there was a dragon and another character, so I can’t remember who I stayed with. The hardest part is describing them because to…[Read more]

I haven’t watched star wars in forever but I think I can say that it had a good plot in that you never really knew what was going to happen next, you were kept in the present and that made things more exciting.

What I was planning on using the dragon for was just what it was in its time: a predator.
No magic, no talking.
Just an untrustworthy carnivore that breathes fire. -

And, my other one from this week:
There was a thud on the grass as a shadow jumped off the brick wall surrounding Smidgen’s Nob.
The shadow looked both ways down the street and pulled open his jacket, patting around on the pockets. The file was still there.
An incredulous grin spread across his face and a muffled laugh disturbed the quiet n…[Read more]
