I think a general rule of thumb for charecter deaths can be some up in that your character death should cause you (as the author) to be legitimately sad (or at least make you feel in some way) and not just be like well I checked if a box yay. @esther-c I agree what everyone else has said. If deaths don’t fit with your story then don’t try to force them. It won’t work, it’ll just look sloppy and…well…obviously forced.

That being said, if you’re really set on killing off someone, or multiple someone’s, it doesn’t have to be a Main character.

I’d say, first off the bat, that killing off a character doesn’t automatically make a book better. If you are going to kill off someone, it’s important to have a specific reason – to highlight the power of the villain, finish an arc, make a thematic point – instead of doing it just because you feel like it’ll make things better.
