291,874 words! Yikes! That’s a lot of words!

I suggest you figure out where the particular scene is going. It’s easier to write if you have some direction.

I think you switch around too much between Stephen and Raine. It may be okay in omniscient POV, I don’t know for sure since I try to right in intimate POV’s, but making just one POV could help your excerpt.
The switch between Rowen’s POV works, but the flip-flopping doesn’t as well. That’s what I see. Then again, I try to write in intimate…[Read more]

I noticed something else. You’re head-hopping. There are three different POV’s in this excerpt. That might be your problem. Are you trying to write in 3rd Person Limited or Omniscient?

Maybe try to insert Rowen at the table first. That way the reader can know that the scene is from his POV. That first sentence might not be necessary.

@Katie Good point. You’re right, it’s definitely a slippery slope.
@Little Brown Dog Is there any way your hero can get the information without torture? Maybe befriend her, instead, and show forgiveness?

Is this character going to be good later on? Would he torture a child? Are the rebels the good guys or the bad?

Alright, here’s a little story (which is sometimes true). A terrorist who knows where the next attack is going to be, is held under your control. Wouldn’t you want to know that information, so you could save hundreds of lives? I do agree with the above comment that once you say that torture is okay, it can lead to some pretty bad things.

Yeah, basically (at least in the YWP program) you set your goal and try to hit it by the end of the month. You could definitely surpass your goal. The whole idea is to challenge yourself and up your productivity. I’m aiming for 30,000.
Good luck if you join!

Basically, you can only join the YWP if you’re seventeen and under, or maybe eighteen. The YWP is more “child-friendly” than the adult site.

No, but if you were, I was going to friend you. 🙂 Last year if you won NaNoWriMo you received a code good for five copies of your book from CreateSpace if you redeemed it by June. I’m not sure if they are doing that again this year.

I’m doing NaNo! Are you on the YWP program site?
Tips, well here’s one I started to use after NaNoWriMo that helps productivity. Set an alarm and just write until the alarm sounds. Also, if you’re using a word processor, try to use the option that blocks out all other distractions. Not sure if Word has that, but Scrivener does, and that’s what I use.

Probably the number one for me was “I Know Why Angels the Dance” by Bryan Davis. I didn’t really cry, but that is probably the closest I’ve come to crying.
