I won’t include the introductory material or speech tags in the word count

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you all Scene 1 of The Tragedie of Chester Smith.

Act the First
Scene 1 – The Will-Reading Room

Chorus: Good people, hear our play. We have before you set the sorry tale of him, the man who much did gain, and quickly lost again. But do not let our message, gained quicker than his wealth, depart from you as fast as gold from Chester Smith.

Chester: Sister Constance, our mother’s death has deeply troubled me. My children will never see more of her than her tombstone.

Constance: I also, Brother Chester, am grieved. Never again will we all sit, elbow to elbow, around her gathered card tables and jostle each other, as we used to do at her apartment every Thanksgiving.

Chester: It is a great loss indeed. My wife will likely have to enlarge her washing loads, now that I no longer can rely on Mother for mine.

Cons: Hush! The Reader of the Will approaches!

Ches: We had better be compensated for being deprived of Mother’s presence. [The Reader ascends the podium, facing the audience. The Chorus, Chester, and Constance sit on chairs with their backs to the audience.]

Reader: Silence, all. The will of Helena Smith will be read. Dated July 24, 2016. I hereby testify that this is my last will and testament. I leave to my eldest, Constance Jones, my apartment and property, including mortgages, furniture, etc. To my youngest, Chester Smith, I leave a sum of two hundred fifty thousand dollars. The remainder of my possessions–

Ches: Huzzah! Hooray! I’m rich! At last, fortune has come, and I am rich!

Reader: Hush, young scoundrel! I haven’t finished!

Ches: I don’t care a pin for you or your stuffy old will, you’ve already read the important part. Home, and away! There is much to be done! [He Exits.]

Cons: I apologize for my brother. But I hope there’ll be some money for me when I come to visit!

Chorus: Let you be wise in how you spend, O Chester, and his sister true. [Exeunt.]
