Agreed. I think I’ve managed to do that in mine. No intentional, but it was almost inevitable in the way the story was constructed. My character has a bit of a problem with authority. She want’s to do things her way, though she is working towards a noble goal. When she finally realized she can’t do it if she remains a rebel, and decides to do the…[Read more]

I kept seeing that as yahovel, as in YA fiction.

I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one who has weird weather.
I think I’ll have to visit Virginia too, if I ever get over there. I don’t think any of my close writer friends are anywhere near there though.

@Bluejay I’ve read one or two by Eleanor Spence and one (Lillipilly Hill)was alright, the other not so good. I didn’t particularly love either though.
The Christian Democratic Party has a good record in the NSW parliment.Another interesting thing about voting is that you number all the candidates in whichever order you want. The candidate with…[Read more]

Other authors: Jackie French, Ethel Turner, Banjo Patterson, Justyn Walker, Allison Lester, Mem Fox, Eleanor Spence, May Gibbs, Dorothy Wall. There’s lots more but I wouldn’t read most of them.

@sarah-h Yes it’s weird. Wikipedia explains it well.
The party’s centre-right ideology has been referred to as conservative, liberal-conservative, and conservative-liberal. The Liberal Party promotes economic liberalism.
So that’s where the name comes from.
@daeus Elizabeth II is the Queen of Australia. We are part of the British commonwealth…[Read more]

I was telling Dad about it and he said that’s why it’s good we have a Queen. We don’t have to go through the rigmarole of voting for her.
Now since you’ve so kindly explained that I’ll do it for Australia. We also have a senate and a house of representatives. 6 senators per state and two per territory. Representatives depend on population, each…[Read more]

Anna Brie replied to the topic "Pen Names" A Good or Bad Move? in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 8 months ago
I use a penname Partly because I don’t like using my really name everywhere. Also because it’s not unique and can be misspelled. A I heard a rumour that it’s better to have a lastname in the fisrt half of the alphabet. Probably not true now, maybe never was, but it still influenced me.

Does anyone think they’d be able to explain US elections. I admit to being confused. Perhaps I should just read Wikipedia.
I have never heard of the Calignee Panther. We do have some rather poisonous snakes and spiders, but people don’t die of them anymore.

Okay, things about Australia. We can have thunder storms in summer, which on the odd occasion make the power go out and on very rare occasions it doesn’t get fixed until 21 hours later. Hence me not saying any thing for a couple of days.
About our history, Captain Cook was the first to claim the territory and do much mapping. There were a few…[Read more]

Well, in case people hadn’t noticed I’m in Australia too. New South Wales which is the first state and once took up the whole eastern side of Australia. and for your information Australia is a Federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy.
And over here people are allowed to own guns. It’s just that we have stricter rules. You can’t carry them.…[Read more] -

Anna Brie replied to the topic How fast do you read? in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 9 months ago
I read way too fast. Often I’ll actually read through twice when I get a new book. In fact that’s a good judge of how much I like it. Like Tessa, I notice new things reading through the umpteenth time.
I do notice a lot more when listing to an audio book, which is of course slower. Also I read history, or any other denser book more slowly. I think…[Read more] -

@kate-flournoy said “To use a very simple example, if the message is about overcoming fear by the grace of God, start with a very timid, nervous, stressed-out character who’s afraid of everything, and take it from there.”
I’ve got that as one of my subplots. I like it because I could actually write a one sentence pitch for that plotline without a…[Read more] -

@Faithdk I was doing some research on goats just yesterday. Getting some is an idea one of my brothers and I have considered a bit several times. Neither of us are really animal people though, so we probably won’t do it.
