@seekjustice Haha! Oh, what fun! ๐
Do you mean the French musical?
And, which movie did you see?ย Because there have probably been fifteen adaptions or so.ย I’ve seen two that I recall, one a silent film. ๐
@catwing Hello!ย I’m attempting a little bit of research about New Testament geography and customs."Sylvester - Sylvester!"
July 24, 2018 at 10:05 pm #75504July 24, 2018 at 10:07 pm #75505The Disney movie and the Broadway musical (the adultified version of the Disney musical). I’m not brave enough to see any of the other ones. I’ll be honest that the book horrified me.
@valtmy Hello!INFP Queen of the Kingdom commander of an army of origami cranes and a sabre from Babylon.
July 24, 2018 at 10:17 pm #75506@seekjustice Yep! (I have see or read neither)
@Rochellaine Cool, my mom is kind of interested in that stuff. I find hearing about it interesting. ๐
Praying you feel better too!
@valtmy Heyo!IMMA KAPEEFER! Til we're old and gray!
July 24, 2018 at 10:19 pm #75507@catwing I’m sorry!ย I meant to say something like “that’s great!” in the last post, but I’m having trouble typing and I guess I got mixed up.
@valtmy Thanks!ย What are you working on?
@seekjustice Hm, well, I wonder if the adaptions I saw changed anything?ย Because I got the impression the story was sad, but I was happy by the end.ย At least, that’s what I recall.ย Is the Hunchback supposed to die or something?ย I thought it was the bad guy who died in the end. This is weird, that you say something is too depressing and I don’t! ๐

July 24, 2018 at 10:20 pm #75508@catwing Problem is, I’m not at all interested in that stuff. ๐

July 24, 2018 at 10:27 pm #75510My WIP. It’s getting to the end of the despair (for now) for my MC so lots of cute moments ahead.ย ๐ But I’ve been looking forward to writing this part for so long that I’m anxious about it.
Just curious. I know there are a lot of dark themes in both Hunchback and Les Mis but why do you find one more depressing than the other?
July 24, 2018 at 10:27 pm #75511Well, in the book, everyone,ย everyoneย dies, with the exception of the small goat and the useless poet. Quasimodo drops a beam on Jehan Frollo’s head, pushes Claude Frollo off the roof, pours molten lead on everyone else. Esmerelda gets hanged and finally Quasimodo starves himself to death. That’s only the ending, the rest of it is worse!
Of course, the Disney movie isn’t at all likes this, but its still very dark. The Broadway musical is much more like the book, but I think it manages to strike a more hopeful balance.

July 24, 2018 at 10:37 pm #75512See above answer to @Rochellaine ๐ Part of the other reason that I found it really difficult was that Claude Frollo, who is the archdeacon of Notre Dame and the main character of the book, lusts after Esemerelda, who is only fifteen/sixteen years old. He even comes extremely close to raping her. When she consistently refuses his advances, he arranges to have her hanged. I’m not sure how much you guys know about Australian news, but last year a Royal Commission was just finished into the abuse (physical, verbal, emotional, and etc, forms of abuse I don’t want to go into on KP) that people in the church have wreaked on vulnerable people who relied on them, mainly children. The stories that came out of that Commission are absolutely horrifying and heartwrenching and the Australian churches have suffered a lot because of it. Rightly so, I believe, there are a lot of people who distrust the church now and because of the church’s horrible mistakes, so many people now distrust God.
Though I wasn’t a victim of any of this abuse, and though Victor Hugo never reallyย condonedย Frollo’s behaviour, I didn’t feel he really condemned it either and the whole story was just a bit too much for me. Though it definitely has some good themes, don’t get me wrong. And it’s still written in a masterful way. I just couldn’t handle it.
(sorry that this is such an intense post. I just feel strongly about this)

July 24, 2018 at 10:39 pm #75513@rocellaine oh, well. Itchy fingers. *shrug*
Too bad.
@seekjustice Whoa… and I’m just here quietly torturing my characters and half hoping I can redeem all my villainous characters (except for the one who represents Satan. Duh.), while knowing I will probably have to let someone go and not be redeemed. *sobs* But somehow it will be good… I don’t know if I could kill a character if they were a MC or character I know. I have only killed off characters who I invented to be killed off, killed them off, then made up backstory. Poor Gary… Your dog misses you. ;PIMMA KAPEEFER! Til we're old and gray!
July 24, 2018 at 10:41 pm #75514@catwing Redeeming characters is the best, isn’t it? I love doing it! (What happened to Gary!!!???)

@seekjustice Indeed.

July 24, 2018 at 10:47 pm #75516@seekjustice I can’t write a long discussion post right now, but I just went back and read the synopses of the two versions I saw and apparently they were modified a bit so not everyone dies, ๐
The 1923 version, (a really big film in it’s time) changed the story drastically, allowing Phoebus to survive with Esmerelda. ๐
The classic Charles Laughton version let Esmerelda live as well.ย I suppose I liked that one especially just because Maureen O’Hara and Charles Laughton are both amazing, ๐ย I don’t really remember what all happened in it,
Oh, it is sad when that happens. ๐

July 24, 2018 at 10:52 pm #75517@catwing Poor Gary! ๐
Lesson to all book characters: Never try to learn more than is good for you, and if you do, and someone threatens to eliminate you, go to the police, then get your CC permit. ๐
