@seekjustice Well, I’ll try to keep this short…the Civil War started because the Southern states felt the government was becoming too powerful, since the Constitution has a clause which says something like “all other powers are reserved to the States” so the South thought the government was making too many extra laws. One of those laws was about slavery, but the Southern states might have abolished slavery themselves if the government hadn’t gotten into it.
So anyway, they decided to secede from the union and make their own government with the original few powers from the Constitution and more rights for the States. If you ask a Southerner (Confederate) what the war was about they will tell you it was about States Rights.
The reason the slavery issue got emphasized was because the South was winning the war, and then England decided to support the South. So, the president of the North knew that if England helped the South they would definitely win the war, so he wrote a proclamation which said all the slaves in the Southern states were free. This was kind of like us saying that all the prisoners in China are free…it doesn’t really work, except as a war strategy. Especially since he didn’t free any of the slaves in the non-seceding states such as Maryland. 😀 Since England had just freed all their slaves, they couldn’t support a side of a war which the president of the North had brought slavery into, so England had to back out, and the North was able to eventually win the war.
There! I think I did a pretty good job! 😀 That’s just the overview, and obviously I’m biased toward the South, but I’ve studied both sides, and would recommend you do so as well before you decide. Though, of course, *giggles* you really don’t need to decide because you’re Australian… 😉 😀
Oh, rearranging bookshelves usually takes me much longer than it should, since I end up reading all the books before putting them away! As it seems you are doing. 😉 I was editing my western, and now I’m back to writing it again.

March 30, 2018 at 1:51 am #69505Right…Well…it’s interesting I’d never heard of that side of it, I’ve just heard about the slavery issue. I did do a whole lot of research on the Confederate flag once though (Fun fact: Justice’s flag was based on the Confederate and Eureka flags combined with the Scottish flag, that’s why I was researching it).
Yeah, it is taking a while. I’ve found a whole lot of books I’d forgotten I had. This is my “research” bookshelf, by the way. I also found a whole lot of dragon/dinosaur books which I’d completely forgotten about!

March 30, 2018 at 1:58 am #69506@seekjustice Oh, interesting! 😀 Yes, I think I did recognize the similarities when I read your book, but I brushed it off as the simple truth that there aren’t that many different ways you can design a flag, so a lot of flags just happen to be similar. That’s really cool, though!
I’ve found a whole lot of books I’d forgotten I had.
Haha! I’ve done that many times. And I love dragon/dinosaur books! I read so many of them when I was younger! Do you have anything from Answers in Genesis?

March 30, 2018 at 2:09 am #69507There are only so many ways to make a flag, yeah, so I worked with a well known revolutionary flag (the Eureka flag) and the Confederate and Scottish flags, just because I like them 😀
I used to have an Answers In Genesis book but I leant it to someone and haven’t seen it since. Most of my books come from Creation Ministries, which is an Australian ministry, but I think they’re international now.

March 30, 2018 at 2:22 am #69508@seekjustice I’m sorry, but just as you’ve next to no knowledge of American history, I’d never heard of your Eureka flag. 😀 I just looked it up, so I see what it is now. Looks like we’ll have to trade histories! Do you have any books or movies you would recommend that would give a good picture of your history?
I find it funny that Ken Ham is an Australian, and is almost a celebrity among conservative Christians here in America, but you barely know of him in his home country. 🙂 I think I might’ve heard of Creation Ministries, but that’s a pretty common word, so I could be mistaken.

March 30, 2018 at 2:41 am #69510@rochellaine No worries, I wouldn’t expect you to know much about Eureka either. It was pretty bad. A whole lot of miners started a revolt and people got shot.
I believe Ken Ham was one an early member of Creation ministries, but there was some sort of dispute and he went and founded Answers in Genesis in America. I actually just looked on another shelf and I do have one of his books called The Lie: Evolution. I used to have his “Answers in Genesis” book though.
okay! If you give me a list of American books to read or topics to look at, I’ll do my best to read them 😀
Well, Banjo Patterson and Henry Lawson are really good places to start. Henry Lawson is more depressing than Patterson and I don’t like him much but he’s got some good poems and short stories that are very Aussie in nature. Banjo is really diverse in the Australia he portrays, from the outback to the city, he was good at learning about different ways of life and then portraying it accurately.
If you want non-fiction, Charles Bean provides a very honest look at Aussies in WW1, he was the official war correspondent for the Australian army and he wrote prolifically. I’m not sure if his work is public domain yet, or if you could get it in America, but it would be worth reading if you could get it. You’re already reading A Little Bush Maid, that’s a classic Aussie book.
Ion Idriess was an Australian biographer and he’s written some good ones, particularly Flynn of the Inland, who started the Flying Doctors service and was a great Christian missionary to the outback.
All The Rivers Run is a really good romance (I’m classifying it as a good romance, so that probably tells you something. I’m not big into romance), I haven’t read it, but years ago I watched the tv series with my family and I liked it. I can’t remember exactly how clean it was, but my whole family watched it, so it can’t have too bad.
Sigrid Thornton and John Waters are two classic Australian actors who did most of their stuff in the ’80s, so they’re probably a bit after the time frame you usually watch, but they both star in the above mentioned tv show.
I should probably stop now, but let me know if you want anymore recommendations!
And what about your list?

March 30, 2018 at 3:03 am #69512@seekjustice *copies list into a Word document* 😀 Yup, I’m almost halfway through A Little Bush Maid. It’s very similar to a lot of American books from the same period, and very good.
Hm, okay. My favorite American poet is Edgar A. Guest. He writes in a very down-to-earth style, sort of like Banjo Patterson, I guess, but American, if you know what I mean. 😉
…And I don’t have time to compile the rest of the list right now! I just noticed the time and I’ve got to go to bed! 🙁 I know tomorrow is Easter for you, so you probably won’t be on, and I might be busy preparing for Easter then too, since we host at our house. Maybe on Monday/Tuesday I can give you the rest of the list. 😀

March 30, 2018 at 3:06 am #69514But I probably won’t be around because we’re going to visit family, so I’ll see you in a few days, maybe 😀

March 30, 2018 at 3:09 am #69515@seekjustice Oh, goodness! 😀 Haha! Looking at the calendar here I see it’s the 30th, but now I realize that’s because it’s past midnight. So today was really Thursday, and tomorrow will be Good Friday, as you say.
Okay, see you later!
