Chapter 34

The flames of the campfire lapped up, and talk, laugh, and giggles sounded.

They had gone hiking…they had explored the entire campground and even tried fishing…and they had all had dinner over a campfire, the first time almost all of them had done so.

Thor and Loki had gone camping many times and loved it with their whole hearts, it seemed.

Not that Tony didn’t like it…he did…it just…brought up memories.

Tony kept his hands on his lap, slowly clenching and unclenching his fists, trying to ease the tension he felt throughout his body.

He had never gone camping much…but he had gone once…a long time ago…long before he had become an orphan.

Tony took in and let out a deep breath, just as footsteps sounded.

Maria held up a bag of marshmallows and two boxes. “It’s s’mores time.”

“Are s’mores yummy…?” Peter asked, eyebrows furrowing together in curiosity, sitting on the log beside Tony.

“They are absolutely delicious! A fire roasted marshmallow and chocolate in between two graham crackers, oh, Peter, it is pure perfection!” Thor replied with a big smile.

“Chocolate AND marshmallow!?” Pietro cried, eyes going wide.

Wanda smiled shyly. “…I don’t know if we’ve had one of those either.”

Nick raised an eyebrow, before looking around at all of the kids around the campfire. “Have any of you had a s’more before?”

Tony raised his hand, as did Sam and Bucky. But no one else raised a hand.

“What!? Well then, that ends tonight!” Loki cried. “We shall make sure all of you eat a s’more!”

They made s’mores as quickly as possible…a couple marshmallows fell into the fire, but everyone got one.

Peter stared wide-eyed at his. “Can I eat it now!?”

Phil laughed, smiled, and nodded. “Of course. Dig in!”

Tony bit into his.

He’d only ever had a s’more once, the one time he went camping, and this one tasted even more delicious than he had remembered.

He savored the taste…and glanced over at Peter, curious to see the first grader’s reaction.

Peter’s eyes widened even more, and he screamed, “It’s so yummy!!!”

He quickly gobbled his down and suddenly giggled. “Ha-ha…I’m sticky!” He cried, melted marshmallow and chocolate all over his cheeks, lips, and hands.

Tony laughed. He looked like he had been attacked by a s’more, not eaten a s’more.

“I’m gonna get you sticky, Tony!” Peter cried, rushing at Tony.

“Hey, hey! No! No getting me sticky!” Tony yelled, running away, both not wanting to be sticky and wanting to make Peter laugh.

Peter giggled, just as Phil grabbed him from behind with a laugh. “Alright Peter, let’s not torture Tony now.”

Tony smirked, sitting up on top of a stump, and he laughed.

Not a fake laugh meant to distract himself and everyone else from the pain he hid deep inside, no.

It was real.

It was wonderfully, amazingly, beautifully real.

Because Tony hadn’t been happy in a long time…his parents’ death had broken him more than he had ever admitted or accepted.

He’d been fighting the pain…the emotions…knowing he didn’t have time to deal with them.

But these friends…this…family…reminded him that life was worth living.

Reminded him that there was still good in the dark world around him.

Reminded him that there was still a place, a good place, for him in the world.

Reminded him he wasn’t worthless.

So he laughed.

Because Tony was finally finding real happiness.

 

Chapter 35

Maria put another bag into the back of the van. “There. I think that’s everything.”

Phil nodded, offering her a smile. “I believe so. Let’s hope we didn’t forget anything.”

Sam dropped the small rock he had been throwing up in the air and then catching again, letting it fall to the dirt.

“One question though,” Thor poked his head out from the other side of the van, an eyebrow raised, “where is Peter?”

Nick, Phil, and Maria all looked around.

Nick blinked. “Thor’s right…where’s Peter!?”

Sam stepped away.

Peter was lost.

It was like that time…all those years ago…them running off, getting lost, worrying all the adults…trying to get to the highest spot to get a good view of a forest.

The forest was beautiful and they wanted to see all of it.

And they had only been naïve little boys.

The wind whipped around them as they sat up in the tree, side by side.

Friends since childhood, fathers both being officers in the Air Force.

Sam nudged his friend in the side. “Hey, Riley, I think we should get down…we’re pretty high up.”

Riley scoffed, playfully poking Sam in the ribcage. “Oh, come on, Samuel, Sam, Sammy,” he grinned, grabbing another branch, “we’re just getting a good view of the forest, that’s all.”

“But Riley-“

“Come on, Sam, let’s go.” Riley called, pulling himself up onto the next branch.

But the adults must have been in a state of emergency.

They had access to helicopters.

And one flew by, throwing up a lot of extra wing and leaves.

Riley lost his footing.

“NO! RILEY!”

Sam jolted out of the memory, barely stopping himself from falling to the dirt, having tripped over his own foot.

Everyone was frantically running around, searching for Peter.

They had been too high in the tree.

Sam closed his eyes.

He couldn’t think about Riley’s death right now. Not when Peter was in possible danger.

He shook his head, shoving the memories aside, and began to help with the search.

Peter could be almost anywhere!

The forest and campground were huge.

“Let him be safe, let him be safe,” Nick thought silently.

He couldn’t have gone too far…he was small, but he wasn’t very quiet most of the time.

Everyone was calling his name, but so far, no luck.

If he had gotten into too much danger…if he had gotten seriously hurt…Nick would never forgive himself.

He couldn’t let any of these kids get hurt like that.

Tony’s heart issue had been scary enough.

“Peter!” Nick called along with everyone else.

Still no reply.

“Is he okay, Uncle Phil!? I’m worried!” Pietro cried, rushing to Phil’s side, worry in his bright blue eyes.

Phil got down on one knee, pulling Pietro into a hug. “I’m sure he’s okay, Pietro. We can’t lose hope. He’s okay. We just have to find him.”

Pietro nodded, satisfied, giving Phil a hug back.

Phil hugged him tighter, let go, and stood back up.

“He could be anywhere! Oh, I hope he’s safe…” Loki whispered, biting his lip.

“What if he’s not? What if he’s seriously hurt…or…or what if-?”

Nick gripped Tony’s shoulder, giving it a quick squeeze. “We can’t think of that, Tony…he’s okay. I’m sure of it.”

Tony pulled away, turning to face Nick. “But how can you be sure!? What if he’s hurt or worse!?”

Nick slowly shook his head, knowing Tony was having a bit of a panic attack. “Tony, you need to calm down…Peter’s fine-“

“You don’t know that!” Tony yelled, fists clenched, fear, worry, and unmasked panic in his eyes.

Steve’s eyes widened. “Tony…”

Nick gave Tony a raised eyebrow. “There’s no need to raise your voice.”

Tony blinked a few times. His eyes widened. His gaze fell to his sneakers. “…I’m sorry. I-I didn’t…ah, it’s…it’s okay if you’re mad, I’ll understand.”

Nick almost opened his mouth, but a giggle sounded.

He turned.

Maria gasped, rushing to the edge of the forest. “Peter!”

Peter came out of the bushes, laughing. “Haha, that was fun!”

Maria got down in front of him. “Where did you go!?”

Peter pointed at the woods. “I-I went into the forest…why?”

Maria gave him a quick hug. Pulled away. “Don’t you EVER do that again, okay? We were all looking for you…we were scared that we may have even lost you, Peter.”

Nick let out a deep, relieved sigh.

“I thought we were playing a game…” Peter whispered softly.

Maria didn’t reply. She scooped Peter up into her arms. She turned to face Nick. “We should probably get going.”

Nick nodded. Now that they had found Peter, it was time to head home. “Let’s get home.”
