Anywho, I came to make a kitten update and instead started talking about morbid stuff…

not yet. I’ve wanted to take pictures of them sleeping (cuz they sleep in the most adorable and weird positions) but they’re in our barn which has the worst lighting. Soon I’ll probably just take them into our field and take a photoshoot, then I’ll figure out how to get photos from my phone onto the computer to post them.
So, the two girls are named Sugar and Spice from an old suggestion @loopylin made. The boy tabby is Mr. Fluffyface. The black and white one our neighbor named Oreo (which fits so well!) we were gonna name him Helmer from the Green Ember, but he wasn’t black enough. The two gray tabbies are Gandalf and Snickerdoodle ( @theducktator )
Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I’m not sure if Snickerdoodle’s name will stick, since Snickerdoodles are brown not gray, but it’s fun to say and I love the word. The other names though, I love.

Second, thanks! Trying to figure this out cause remember in that fanfic I shared with you, that scene where the enemy team shoots Sniper? I’m writing scenes from his perspective and want to know exactly how long he would be able to remain conscious before passing out and eventually technically dying, because there’s a minor plot point in his retelling of events that Huntress’s lacks, and it hinges on whether he was alive long enough to actually see that it was his Classic Team equivalent who shot him. They actually have a short bit of history.

I’m pretty sure the authorities have me flagged. I had to do a “sell an element” project a couple years ago, and I chose polonium, which meant researching how to buy it, and also given the fact I chose to sell it specifically for murdering people, I researched how much it would take to kill someone too. XD If you want to learn how to build a bomb, you could use a book called The Anarchist’s Cookbook, which gives instructions. I found it by asking a librarian. XD

How do you know all that shooting stuff, first of all?
I researched GSW’s a year or two ago for a character. He had been shot in the knee, shattering his patella and making it hard for him to walk without a brace by my lore. I wanted to see if that was really a thing (turns out, a form of torture is actually shooting someone behind the knee since it hurts, but rarely causes long-lasting damage and isn’t deadly. Sometimes it can shatter the patella, but rarely). After that, I kinda sorta got obsessed with researching how different GSW’s effected different parts of the body for a couple months. I literally have saved articles about bullet wounds to the neck, chest, back, legs, arms, and head. Haven’t reviewed it for a while, so I’m rusty.
Yeah, I wondered if it was Sniper. If I remember correctly, he was shot in the chest and the side of his abdomen, right? Where he was shot in the abdomen (If I remember the positions correctly, if I don’t remember it right, then don’t listen to this) wasn’t deadly since it was too low I think for the stomach, so it probably just hit intestine. which can be a problem later on if untreated, but in and of itself isn’t instantly deadly. Though, there is an artery that runs along the side that could’ve been hit. The chest shot though, was the deadly one. If it went right through his heart, i believe that’s instant death, or almost instant death, But if it only punctured the main blood vessels there, it’d be about two minutes before he’d die from bleeding out (a little shorter time probably given his other wound.) So yeah, in my non-expert opinion, I think he could believably be alive for up to a minute or two, depending on the location of the gunshot wounds.

I’m assuming you saw that image in the school roleplay lol. I think that’s right. I don’t think he was hit in the heart directly, but yeah, I assumed it punctured one of the big arteries that runs through there. Two minutes seems solid, if only for story purposes.

Also, thinking of Sniper getting shot, it hit me yesterday but Medic is definitely a parody of how real army medics will do anything to keep their soldiers alive. It seems so obvious, don’t know why i haven’t made the connection, but yeah, perfect parody. (Minus the accent and crazy part)

If he is relaxed when he gets shot, he will bleed out faster. If he is high on adrenaline his contracted muscles will hamper the blood flow giving him more time.

i love how it’s just like:
the character: is a literal assassin and would know like 10 ways to kill me if I got within a mile of him. Plus my augmentations to him give him two or three more of those ways to kill me.
me: I feel so bad for you, your life is so tragic. I would give you a hug if I weren’t constrained by the fact that you are on a page and I am outside of it and that you would probably try to bite my head off.

I believe he became a doctor less cause he wanted to save lives and more out of sheer curiosity as to how people work inside….lol. Hence why Old Heavy yells at him about “experimenting on them, putting who knows what in their bodies…” or something along those lines.

And then he got (figuratively) backstabbed—by his own father, no less. Hey guys, I’ve been thinking. How do you encourage a reader to like a character who is already dead? And with minimal flashbacks? And and without being boringly sad? I have a few ideas, but this has been a challenge so far and I was wondering what everyone else thinks.

Off the top of my head:
I think a big thing is to make them relatable, even if they’re gone. When people die, others will usually either forget their quirks or only remember the crazy things. Find a realistic balance that makes the character interesting. Some ideas…
Hearsay: What do the characters say about them? Obviously , this will be one of the biggest ways we learn about the character. It’s a great tool. While memories can be sad, most of those we(people after a funeral, etc.) share are funny or sweet. Just the kind to make a character likeable for their personality, not backstory.
Example: Nia tells how Esben (WFS) betted with his brother about who got the last bowl of soup – to the point they had a sailing race over it. It’s a hilarious memory, but it also paints a vivid, likeable character even after when he’s been gone for nine years.
Items: What we have tells a lot about us. There’s a reason nerdy people like me study historical clothing and archeology – what we make, wear, and surround ourselves with reflect our priorities and our outlooks on life. I would love to see something simple and “unimportant” be used to describe an absent/dead character. It could be big – a quiet reading book with carefully polished shelves – or small – a stash of gummy worms hidden behind one of the books.
Example: *struggling to think of exact instances* Even though Jack (O’Malley Series) isn’t dead, when he buys himself a Wiley E Coyote toothbrush it shows two very important sides of his character. 1. He likes having his stuff distinctive and has a practical side (used to people not looking very closely before they grab a toothbrush to use) 2. He is young at heart and loves a good laugh.
