Wolfgang will fight if there’s a fight, and if he doesn’t know the sides, he’ll just punch everyone, especially the bigger stronger kids, just for the thrill of it. XD

That kid’s going to die young.

True, true. *Jots this into his character file*

        Wilhelm

“I train with several weapons.” He blinked slowly. “The lance and pole arms, the langschwert, the arming sword, sometimes the messer and seax though they be thought not noble weapons. And naturally the sword takes preimenance as the weapon of knights.”

He touched his long dagger. The familiar handle was grounding. He even smiled.

“I think the langshwert is my favorite. What of your discipline? What weapons strike your fancy?”

He turned slightly, ready to begin walking toward the arming racks should the opportunity arise.

Hmm. I could see that. Does he ever get in a fight to distract someone from his righteously nefarious duties?

I’ve always assumed he dies in his WIP because he’s from Nazi Germany and you have a reputation to uphold. It seems like a reasonable rule to assume your characters die in their WIPs.

                    Jasper

“Every weapon strikes my fancy.” Jasper chuckled, shaking his head at himself. “When I wish to distract myself from something, I experiment with new weapons. I have a preference for the one on my hip. Of course, from your vocation alone, I would be a fool to think your sword is of lesser use than mine.”

He snapped his fingers. He found himself doing that a lot, just to put a mental pin in something.

“I used to hear knight’s tales from an old nurse of mine. She was from my mother’s country.” He snapped his fingers again. The existence of a knight’s code was such a fun idea, and Jasper had a fondness for it. “When I am with my little sisters, we like to play make-believe. I come up with random rules to make them laugh. ‘My lady, you must never blow your own nose without mine aid!’ – ‘The greatest virtue is the ability to break wind without making a sound!’ – ‘Or is that the greatest villainy?’ Foolish things, but there is nothing wrong with filling a child’s life with the prettiest foolery. I love my sisters.”

He glanced at Wolfgang as he said this. Then he strode to the arming racks and studied his options. “That nurse… Polina, wasn’t she called? She started crying over me every night when I was in my cot. Thought I was covered in blood or grown an extra head. Quite insane. We had to send her away. Before that… she told me something. She made up those knight’s tales so I’d learn to follow nursery rules and feel righteous about it. The joke is on her, because I knew that. But I loved her.“

One last finger snap. “Your love for your sword is what gives the sword power. Wouldn’t you say?”

He spied something he liked. He grasped the handle of a heavy morning star. The metal head was the size of a human’s head, covered in spikes. He hoisted it up and took an offensive stance, facing the nearest target dummy,

After years of training with morning stars – one of his other preferences, besides his sword – he loved the weight. This morning star was not of the flail style, but still required a lot of skillful energy distribution.

There was a delicious danger in wielding the tool of a brute. Heavy metal, hanging from chains, covered in sharp things – they were the riskier tools, but they brought more satisfaction than a plain blade.

Jasper sized up the target. He lunged toward it, sliding his hands down the handle at the last moment to maximize force.

With a loud crack, the weapon lodged itself in its target, and the dummy’s head caved in.

Lol. It’s fun when they get chatty.

                      Wilhelm

He watched in silence as Jasper destroyed the dummy. Morning stars were strange. A weapon of priests, praised for being “bloodless” yet entirely malicious. Seeing it in Jasper’s hands shook something in Wilhelm, something uncomfortably cold and small.

“My love of the sword neither gives nor removes its power. It only enables me to use it.” He began browsing the racks for a longsword and shield. The weapons were intentionally blunted, or should have been. He glanced at Jasper’s choice.

“You like to fight. I suppose the codes of knighthood are not useful for you now you are out of the nursery. Have you been to war?”

                        Jasper

“Yes.” A memory of his hands, smaller in young age, shaking and covered in bloody sweat. “Have you?”

                          Hmmm.

                          Wilhelm

He hesitated. The sunlight was golden here. Its jubilant rays soaked the world in laughter.

“Yes. I’m a Kemp. Although my father sent me back from the only large battle I have been in.” He had also been sent back from every attempt to fight outside of battles. A familiar set of dark blue eyes flashed across his vision. They were just as helpless as before, only angry about it. Wilhelm pulled a sword down and weighed it in his hand.

“If only there was peace in the world already.” He swung experimentally at a dummy. The thing rattled from the strike, but otherwise showed no harm. Good.

                            Ellis

Ellis thanked Moth quietly as he was given the cup. He sat in silence for a while, taking occasional sips. The silence was uncomfortable. He wanted to move, to do something other than wait and think. “I… am sorry for scaring you,” he said finally. “I should have better control over it by now.”

                              Moth

Moth sat on the bench and pulled his knees up to his chin. He fidgeted with a tuft of fur on his leg. “To be tied to the faerie lands is not an easy thing. It… is hard, really. It pulls you into an embrace but refuses to smile. Do you understand this?”

After the words came out of his mouth, it instantly seemed like he had said something taboo. He frowned, burying his face in his knees.

Ellis surely didn’t want to talk about his exhaustion or frustrations. He must hear a lot of that at home. This seemed like a fine time to find something else to think about.

All the fencing strips were active. People rushed at each other, testing the waters with each step. The clanging and slashing of swords sometimes died down, but always grew louder again. A lot of boys were training now.

A dark-headed figure stood at the end of the room, fighting a trainer. His wild hair and height were unmistakable. He lunged forward, taking a heavy strike to his shield, and tried to push the strike back with enough returning force to land his own hit.

                              Ari.

Moth lifted his head. His frown melted into a more comically evil expression. He pointed. “We should go stand there and distract that boy from his training, so he loses.”

Ellette, please bump into the conversation if you want to. I don’t think Jasper would say anything right now. And it’s high time Wolf is given the opportunity to interject, even if you don’t think he would take that opportunity.
