This empty space that he had found was suddenly not so empty. He looked past Wolfgang’s flying eating utensils and made out two unfamiliar faces. They were both dark headed boys, but that was where resemblance stopped.
Or was it?
His spit politely onto the floor. He was at an awkward place to talk to the newcomers.
Why do you want to talk to them? He had spent most of yesterday trying to narrow his conversations to one at a time. This was madness.
But the questions kept running through his head. Why did the angry boy choose to sit by other people? Was he lonely? Why did the boy with spectacles only poke at his breakfast? Wasn’t he hungry?
Why were any of them here at all?
His brother had called his questions “the best questions” but at the moment the habbit felt like nothing more than torment. He stabbed his last slice of ham. The questions in his mind were so loud, he almost didn’t hear Wolfgang. It certainly took him half a minute to realize what his friend was saying.

“It’s… possibly connected.” The slightest bit of a growl tinged his voice. He didn’t want to think about his headaches or his visions at the moment. One was currently more forgettable than the other. He changed the subject, trying to deviate the attention away from himself.
“Are you enjoying being at the school so far?”

“Yes. I was just thinking, I’ve never seen so many people before. It’s wonderful. I… might try to learn everyone’s names. Don’t you think that would be good? Everyone likes to be known by name.”

“I think that is a very admirable goal. Though maybe a bit ambitious. There are more royals here than I would like to count.” He paused, looking around the room. “ How many names do you know now?”

“Not many,” Moth admitted. “I arrived last night. I met Lois Thorne first. Flax was there, too. Then I met Ari not long before retiring for the night.”
Three new acquaintances felt like a lot, but in the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t.
He pulled his feet up onto his seat, folded his hands together, and propped them on his knee. “And now, I know Ellis Stormwatcher.”

Moth’s informal mannerisms surprised him, coming from a prince. Ellis grinned. Moth was very charming in his own strange way. He’s a fairie prince, Ellis reminded himself.
“I can give you a couple more names.” He nodded to someone across the room. “That boy who looks like me but less blond is Lucian, my brother. And that boy over there with the horns is Jack Celby. I met him when I was checking in.”

“Lucien… Jack Celby. I’ll remember. I can address them in passing. They will try to remember if they’ve met me before, same as you wondered.”
Laugh lines framed Moth’s eyes. They were the only sign – outside of what he said – proving he was being playful.
“You are lucky to have your brother with you,” he added.
