Hi guys! Whaley here!
So, I was thinking. We have charrie topics. We have writing sprint topics. We have encouragement topics. We have a Q&A topic.
Why not a plotting topic?
This is topic where we ask for help with plotting complications! I, for one, find plotting very hard. Especially when you know the beginning, and the end, and the important bits…
But have no idea what comes in between.
It’s SOOOOOOOOOOO HAAAAAAARD.
But since I’m guessing we all have problems with this, that’s why we should be working on it together and help each other, by brainstorming or question spamming. We must generate ideas. Whatever it takes.

May 24, 2023 at 8:45 pm #144965If it helps I can tell you what @otherworldlyHistorian does. (right now I am working on scripts for an informational podcast series so it doesn’t really have a plot)
for otherworldlyHistorian’s book Kharvia b1 (it doesn’t have an actual title yet) he is making a chapter-by-chapter plot summary and using a spreadsheet to keep track of all of the characters. He is currently only 8 chapters into part II (the 30th overall (he thinks it will altogether be somewhere between 80 and 105 chapters)) I can give you guys an update on how it works after he finishes writing. Although this would only work for someone that is a plotter and is probably only useful for something with a complex plot (he has ~14 POVs who for the most part are following their own interconnected plotlines)
May 24, 2023 at 8:49 pm #144967WOW this is very much needed plotting can be so tough…
Follow your heart, but take your brain with you.
May 25, 2023 at 11:05 am #145003Yeah I’m mostly outlining my chapters, and writing bits and pieces from random chapters when I feel inspired. Sounds like it’s going great for otherworldlyhistorian. Do you two know each other outside of KP?
I think it’s important to plot even if you’re a pantser by nature, because that’s literally the process of making sure your story makes sense. That is plotting. (I’ve read books by people who believe they can pants through everything and still make it sound good, and believe me, it’s a combo of rambles and shambles.)

May 25, 2023 at 11:13 am #145006Have any of you heard of MacGuffins? They’re powerful objects your heroes are usually trying to get before the villains do. The name usually carries a negative aura (as in, this object could be switched with any other object and it wouldn’t matter because it isn’t relevant to the worldbuilding or the characters), but here, I’m just looking to write this trope correctly. Because a hallmark of archaeology plotlines is the MacGuffin.
Anyways, I know how I want to twist this trope into something unique… but I need actual objects now XD Not just crowns, or necklaces, or swords imbued with magical power. Interesting things.
Any random objects that could be majestic enough, but also not boring?

May 25, 2023 at 11:36 am #145015Hmm, your WIP is about archaeology? I would look up relics/common items used in that time/by that civilization, like in Jennifer Nielsen’s Mark of the Thief she used a roman bulla.
Oh and then she also used a…. I think it was a circlet or something? Idk that came to mind 😆 Maybe some kind of tool, item of clothing or some kind of jewelry, or a weapon?
I don’t really know much about your WIP, but if you want to share more I could try to come up with some other ideas 🙂
