Welp… I guess posting it on Wednesday didn’t happen. 🤦🏻♀️ 😅 But here it is!! Sorry for making y’all wait so long. I may have forgotten about it… *hides behind pillow* *throws pillow, clears throat, and resumes poise*
Anywho, I put a little bit of the end of the previous chapter, just so you guys can get back into the feel.

They made their way to the building without any alarms going off. But that was what worried Ami. There had to be security cameras. Why had no one seen them yet? She decided to ignore it. After all, they were safe right now.
Destry led her to the door that Ev had broken. It was unlocked. Odd. Ami gave Destry a confused look. He just shrugged and walked into the dim, deserted hallway. Destry walked to the cell that had been next to his. The keys were there hanging on the wall.
He grabbed them without making a sound and unlocked the cell. Adalynn walked out with a confused expression. Ami rushed over to her and wrapped her in a hug. “Ami,” Adalynn whispered. Tears came to Ami’s eyes. She had missed her mother.
Destry made his way down the row of cells. One by one, Fynn, Harlin, Skyler, and Malyk walked out. Ami’s heart pounded against her chest. No one knew that they were doing this. Something was up. She frantically looked behind her. She was watching the inside door while the others stayed by the door that led to the outside.
Right as Destry was unlocking Ruben’s cell, Ami heard a creaking sound behind her. Before she could turn around, a strong arm was wrapped around her neck and she heard a gun being cocked.
Chapter 19
Amidala’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes grew wide and she was so petrified with fear that she couldn’t even cry out. “Amidala!” Adalynn screamed, running towards her.
“If you want to live, you’ll keep your distance,” Derek Len said, pointing the gun straight ahead. Adalynn stopped in her tracks.
Ruben ran in front of her, “You won’t hurt her.” His face hardened. “Get your hands off my daughter.”
Ami felt small relief in that her father was right there; but he was unarmed, and Len had a gun in his hand. Len raised his gun and Ami knew that it was now pointing at her head. “You will all walk back into your cells or I’ll press this trigger.”
Ruben whispered something in Adalynn’s ear and he led the rest of his family back into their cells. “No!” Ami cried. Len tightened his grip around her neck. “Silence,” he commanded. Ami closed her mouth and swallowed hard. The fleeting thought of trying to escape crossed her mind, but she excused it. It would only make things worse.
She was sure that they could all hear her heart beating. Her hands were clammy and she couldn’t stop shaking. The thought of death was brought to mind. With a press of a trigger, her life could be gone. Fear crowded her heart pushing out any flicker of hope. Was there any way they would escape this?
At that moment, the door behind her opened. “General Len,” another guard said. Len stepped away from the door and turned around, not loosening his grip on Ami. She gasped when she saw Ev apprehended. He had a bruise on his jaw and a large scratch on the side of his forehead.
Ev’s face changed from surprise to guilt as he saw Ami. She tried to communicate through her gaze that it wasn’t his fault, but he didn’t make eye contact. The guard said, “He caused the explosion.”
Len nodded. “Put him in a cell.” The guard obeyed quickly. Ami twisted in Len’s grasp.
“No! Please let him go!” Tears filled her eyes. Her legs weakened as Len brought the gun closer.
“Don’t speak unless he’ll be gone.”
Ami quickly stopped talking, but she sniffled and tried to control her crying. She closed her eyes and mouthed the words, “Lord, please help. Please… where are you?” Did He even care?
Len slowly lowered his gun and motioned for the guard to close the cell doors. As he was about to do so, music started to play over the loudspeakers. At first it was quiet, but got louder and continued joyfully ringing in Ami’s ears. It was the sound of a piccolo and Ami recognized it immediately. Dao! The guard stopped. He placed his hands over his ears and groaned. Len dropped his gun and let go of Ami. He clamped his hands over his ears and yelled, “Where is that wretched sound coming from?”
The guard just shrugged.
“Go stop it!” Len bellowed. Ruben ran out of his cell and picked up Len’s gun, pointing it at him.
“Adalynn, kids, leave! Quick!” Ruben cried out as the music floated around the room. Ami ran towards her mother and her siblings. They left the prison with the Barlowes following. Soon, Ruben ran out with them too.
They rushed out the gate. Ami glanced up at the watchtower. There stood Dao playing his piccolo. He caught Ami’s eye and winked. Ami couldn’t help but smile. God had answered her prayer, but in a different way than she would have ever thought. So He did care. He was there the whole time.
Destry led the way to Geoffrey and everybody piled in. He started the bus as they shut the door, speeding down the road and driving them as far away from the prison as possible. Everyone was silent for a moment. Ami was still mute with fear. That was the closest to death she had ever gotten and she didn’t plan to get that close any time soon.
Finally Fynn said, “That was crazy.”
Ruben nodded from the passenger seat. “I’m never doing that again,” he looked at Ami. “Are you okay, Amidala?”
She nodded. “I should be…” she was silent for a moment. “I’m more thankful than anything. That music… it was Dao’s. Len and his guards didn’t seem to like it very much.”
Destry agreed, “I was going to say that was luck, but it was all God’s hand working. He saved us.”
Ami sighed. God was right there with them. He always was… Ami glanced to the side at Malyk and Harlin. They were whispering to each other. She frowned. Why couldn’t they just act like the rest of them? They didn’t have to act like outcasts.
Ami stood up and walked to the back of the bus. She dug through the luggage, and finally found her purse. Ruben turned around. “What are you doing?”
She pulled out the medallion Bayron Len had given her and held it out. “This,” she said. “I just wanted to look at it. It must be important.”
Ruben nodded. “Can I see it?”
Ami handed him the golden pin. He handled it and squinted, trying to look at it. “I think there’s some kind of writing here…”
Ami peeked over his shoulder. “You’re right. It’s no language I can recognize.”
Ruben sighed, handing the medallion back to Ami. He rubbed his temples. “I’m to exhausted to think about it now.”
Ami sat back down, and heard Ev wince. He was gently touching the wound on his head.
“You good?” Ami asked.
“Yeah,” Ev shrugged. “I’ll be fine.”
In front of them, Adalynn gasped and got out of her seat, walking over to Ev. “We need to clean your head. That’s one nasty cut.”
Ev shrugged. “It’s not that bad. It’ll be fine.”
“No. I’m going to go find some medical supplies,” Adalynn walked to the back of the bus and started to dig through the luggage. Ev raised his eyebrows at Ami, and she smiled and nodded.
Harlin watched Adalynn come back with her hands full of all kinds of medical paraphernalia. She joined her. “You know, Adalynn, I used to be a nurse. Do you mind if I help?”
“Of course not!” Adalynn said. “You probably know more than me about this kind of stuff, then.”
Harlin smiled and nodded. The two women started to clean and bandage the side of Ev’s head. He caught Ami’s gaze and rolled his eyes. Ami simply laughed.
“How did you get that cut in the first place?” She asked.
“Well, when I got to the race, I was able to sneak in because of the large crowd.” Ev said. “I could have won the race, but instead, I started spinning in circles and all kinds of fun stuff.”
By the look on Ami’s face, the ‘fun stuff’ was more dangerous than fun. Everton continued, trying to not act as excited, “I may have gotten a little out of control. So I ran into a few things, on accident, and… caused an explosion. That got a lot of guards to come. One guard found me as I was trying to escape and the rest of the story you know.”
Ami shook her head. “I don’t know what to say.”
“How about ‘thank you’?” Ev said. Ami noticed Malyk glance at Ev quickly.
“All right,” Ami said. “Thank you, Everton. But we still almost died… so I’m not sure if it fully counts.”
Ev rolled his eyes. Ruben spoke up, “There’s no doubt about it now. We really are enemies of the government.”
Ev sighed. “I… uh… I’m… sorry about that.” He looked down at his shoes.
Ruben shook his head. “It’s not your fault. After all, it was my idea to steal the bus.”
Malyk raised an eyebrow, finally saying something. “That was your idea?”
“Yep. I think Ev’s influencing me.”
Ami grinned. She glanced at Malyk for his response. “Hm,” he said, looking out the window.
Ami caught Ev’s eye. There was still room for reconciliation. Ev shook his head. Apparently he didn’t think so. She sighed and offered a smile.
Maybe now wasn’t the time. She looked out at the stars. Ev would need time. And so would Malyk. But maybe running from the government together would bring them closer. Ami sighed. She shouldn’t be worrying about Ev’s family. So her thoughts wandered to her own family. Knowing Len, she could only hope that running from the government wouldn’t tear her family apart.
Ami shook the thought out of her head. They were inseparable. Nothing could break them apart. Then her smile fell. She sat up straight. “Guys!” She said. “We left Artemis!”
yeah… I know that wasn’t the best cliffhanger, but it will play a part later on. 😅

December 23, 2022 at 3:30 pm #125573Wow that was a close call! I like how mysterious Dao is.
He must increase, but I must decrease.
December 23, 2022 at 3:44 pm #125576I know!!
I really like Dao! I know that the fact that he suddenly showed up and saved them is kind of deus es machina, but it had to happen. 😁

So this may be a little random… but what happens to the people that the districts close in on? I’m really not trying to be creepy, just that you might want to explain it! I think it would broaden the reader’s view of the dire situation.

So I think I get what you’re saying. 😅
Are you asking what happens to the people inside The Orb, or outside The Orb?
