Rory hung on to Leo, pressing his face against the older boy’s shoulder. For a time he wept, and the relief was frighteningly sweet. At last he forced out in a choked voice, “Leo, I… I want to go back to the church.”

His eyebrows rose. The church?
“Alright.” He wouldn’t question it.
“We can take an early lunch break in a few minutes. Or we can go by after work. Whichever you want.”
He’d message Liko and tell him he had to leave early. And he’d send a number over to Silvia to let her know where they’d be.
The kid was still crying, but nothing like the gut wrenching sobs of a few minutes ago. Leo rubbed a small circle over Rory’s back, feeling the kid’s shoulders relax.

Rory regained his breath enough to reply, “As soon as we can.” He scrubbed the tears from his eyes with the back of his hand and swallowed hard.

He slipped his handkerchief into Rory’s. The work fridge down here had a case of water bottles. Leo got one, opened it, and set it on the small table by the couch.
“I’ll get a few things tied up and we can go.”
First, to message Liko and Silvia. He set his glass tablet down on the table.
Liko, a situation came up. Taking my apprentice on an early lunch break. Bathroom rail was fixed.
He swiped send. Now Silvia. He pressed the com button on his belt. “Hey Sis, We’re going by the church, alright?
Her voice sounded muffled in his ear. “Is something wrong?”
“Not exactly. Just a 101. You good?”
“Yeah. I have another reading assignment though.” Her huff of frustration nearly blew his eardrum. He winced.
“Don’t hesitate to call if you need something, Kay?”
“Sure.”
Good. Now to find something to brace Rory’s knee.

Rory stared at the cloth Leo had given him. He wasn’t exactly sure what to do with it, so he folded it into a neat square and set it on his knee. Then he wiped the tears from his face with the back of his sleeve. Reaching out, he picked up the water bottle and drained it. He was still shaking, but the cool water helped to calm him down, and when he finished he was breathing more easily. He turned and watched Leo, wondering what they were going to do next.

Rummaging through several junk drawers produced a thin foam pad, two unsharpened pencils, an old knit shirt, and one hopefully unused ace wrap from a questionablely dated first aid kit.
“Let’s see what we can do for that knee.”
He knelt in front of Rory and helped him straighten out his leg. The foam pad reached almost all the way around. It would have to do. Leo tied it in place with a strip torn from the shirt. The pencils went on either side, with more shirt material covering their ends. Hopefully the ace wrap would be long enough to hold it all in place.
“Any proffession you ever wished to work in?” he asked, hoping to distract Rory a little while he worked.

Rory watched in fascination while Leo worked. As the older boy began wrapping his knee, he spoke. “Any profession you ever wished to work in?”
Rory swallowed and blinked. “I… I don’t really know what that means.”

Ellie’s brow furrowed, her brain trying to keep track of all the questions.
“No, he doesn’t talk. And when he grows up he probably won’t be as soft. Do you know a kid named Sebastian? No? Well he just handed the puppy over to us yesterday and left before we could argue. I still don’t get why.”
The puppy began wiggling too much again so she set him back down. Eddie found a stick and started a game of fetch.
