He waited for Rory to move back before slipping on his helmet, but, just as he readied the torch, something told him to stop.
Why is he staring at me?
“You good kid? Do you-” Leo stopped, fingers about to drop his visor frozen in place. Something about the kid reminded him of a test pilot who’d nearly gone down with his ship. The man had to be transferred to another position. “Hey, you need space? I’ve done this plenty. Maybe not on tile, but heaps of other stuff. Did it hanging off my ship once when we had an air leak out of atmosphere.”
He slowly resumed prepping the torch, but left his helmet visor up so Rory could see his face.
“You ever used one of these before?”

“I’ve done this plenty,” Leo said. “Maybe not on tile, but heaps of other stuff. Did it hanging off my ship once when we had an air leak out of atmosphere.”
Ship…. atmosphere. That meant a flying ship. An airplane.

Rory sucked in a sharp breath through his teeth.
Leo’s voice sounded, dragging him back to the present. “You ever used one of these before?”
Something whistled in his memory and there was a bright flash. Red lights. Yelling–
Rory blinked several times and shook his head quickly.
Fires will rise to testify that 2+2=4. Swords will be drawn to prove that leaves are green in summer

His eyebrows quirked, but he didn’t question Rory’s agitated silence. God knew what was going through the kid’s head.
He flicked the torch on to a low, white flame. The sealent bubbled a bit under the heat. He slowly turned it up to a much hotter blue, thankful for his well fired gauntles. His visor closed of it’s own accord, sensing the rising temperature.
It only took a few seconds for the seal to lose its opaque whiteness and turn clear. Leo switched off the torch.
“There, all done. Now we let that cool and don’t let any kids sign their names in it like they did the pavement outside.” He grinned as he slipped off his helmet. “Not that I ever did anything like that when I was young.”

Rory drew in a slow breath as Leo turned off the flame. For a moment that awful scene had threatened to flash through his mind. Thankfully, he’d fought it back.
This time.
“There, all done. Now we let that cool and don’t let any kids sign their names in it like they did the pavement outside.” Leo grinned as he slipped off his helmet. “Not that I ever did anything like that when I was young.”Rory blinked. “They wrote their names in stone? Were they war heroes?” He shivered slightly. War heroes were always cruel. And brutal.

“He’s my, uh,” Felicity’s face reddened as she suddenly remembered what she had said the day before. She hurriedly turned her face away from Chase for a moment. “He’s my best friend. Or something.”

Okay, so my brain has been reading things with interesting twists to words. I literally just read that as “We’ve reached 500 papayas, guys.”

War heroes? A frown creased Leo’s brow. Had this kid ever even deamed a childhood? “No. Just a bunch of kids walking home from school. They saw the sidewalk had a new square of pavement, and decided it would be fun to write their names in the wet cement. A little silly perhaps, but harmless.”
He turned a thoughtful gaze onto his work. “Back when I was young, I showed Silvia how to make leaf imprints in new sidewalk. We redecorated the neighborhood, so to speak.”
He sigh, and started gathing his tools up.
“Those were good days, even with all the badness.”

Rory thought very long and hard about what Leo had said. “So… you desecrated government property, and you weren’t punished for it? And… and they weren’t either?” The last was more hesitant. He knew that Leo and Silvia were alive and unharmed… for the most part, but the other kids….

“Hey, hey, hey!” Marcel separated the two with a guarding hand. “We will not kill anybody. And I will not allow unnecessary attacks. Do you both understand?”

The group passed the lobby bar. Hugo stopped to grab Victor and Lois cups of hot chocolate, and to grab a thermos.They slipped into science class as quietly as they could.
“You’re late,” the teacher faced the three boys.
“I’m very sorry, ma’am.” Hugo swayed for a moment, and gestured with an artistic despair – as if he couldn’t think of an appropriate answer to such a grievous wrong. “We have no excuse.”
“That’s right.” She yawned and began to pull out three detention reports.
“I noticed you forgot your mug, ma’am. The one with cat stickers?” Hugo held out the steaming thermos he picked up earlier.
The teacher stared at the boy. “Are you trying to humor me?”
Hugo shrugged. “I never forget a cup.”
For a moment, the teacher didn’t know what to say. She took the drink and slowly sat back down. “Thank you. Angelo, Thorne… Victor. Please make yourself comfortable.”

Chase was confused. Did she not know if this person was a friend or not? “D-does he l-like f-faw, fawwwns?” It was random, and not the best type of question to keep the conversation going, but Chase wished to know.
