A faint smile tugged at Marcel’s mouth. “I’m going that way. Come on.”
Mateo and the other kid followed a few steps behind. They took a slight detour, so Marcel could kick a loose locker and catch a book before it fell all the way from the top of the locker row. Being able to hide things in higher spaces was convenient. Marcel turned on his heel and walked backwards, meeting the two students’ eyes. “You’re both new?”

Celarent side-eyed Mateo. Dead for a long time, eh? He certainly looked it. Celarent turned back to Bird Boy. He seemed decent enough.
“This is my first day. Does everyone have wings where you’re from?” Living on the streets, Celarent didn’t know much about other countries, but he’d assumed that none of their people were winged. Hopefully asking about it wasn’t rude. Maybe Bird Boy was a mutant. There had been rumors of the government performing illegal experiments on people.

😂 I feel that if these characters did not try to accept differences, there would be an active fight by this point.

Responding to Mateo first, Marcel shrugged his shoulders one by one. “Immortal, undead. I see where you’re coming from.”
He looked at the other kid. This boy was still nameless, but looked much more normal – and still unnerved. Marcel’s eyes softened. “Yes and no… I’m the only one right now. And by the way, I am not related to birds. Common mistake.”

The boy tipped his hat. He may have been…strange, but he did have manners. “I’m Ryla. Nice to meet you.” She fidgeted awkwardly with her bag. “Do you like cookies?”

Mateo looked at the kid, he said in a threatening voice, “Don’t make that mistake again.” He then turned to little fellow and said in his ‘light-hearted’ voice, “Where too, Pequeño?”

Celarent folded his arms and gave Mateo a disdainful look. He hadn’t actually called Bird Boy by that nickname out loud had he? He knew the rules. Only mock people behind their back. Saying it to their faces made you sound juvenile. He groaned inwardly. He’d already broken rule 6: Forge an allyship with those in power, and DON’T anger them. Though Mateo seemed to answer to Bird Boy, and Bird Boy acted most pleasantly.
He turned his thoughts to Bird Boy’s answer. “The only one? How come?” That might have come off as too nosy. Celarent flashed his practiced charming smile again. “I’m Celarent, by the way.”
