Then he cleared his throat and continued.
“This school is my escape, I suppose. I’m just trying to enjoy the time I have while I’m here.”

The last screw dropped into the bucket. Leo looked up from his tinkering with the radios at the sudden stop of the steady plink, tink sounds.
“All done? Great job. We just got a work order for an AC unit. Sounds like it’s leaking coolant into one of the teacher’s offices. Do you feel up to a short walk, or would you rather work on these things till I get back? It shouldn’t take long.”
Leo pulled a long handled touch from a drawer, checked the fuel, and tucked it into his belt. One think he’d learned in Arospace: most leaky could be fixed with a little heat and metal. Or duct tape. He dug a new roll out from under the sink.

Rory looked up quickly. “I’ll come with you right now!” He scrambled up. “That is, I’ll come with you now… if you would like me to… if your orders are to do so… sir… Leo.”
He shifted from one foot to the other.
Suggestions had never been a part of his life. Suggestions were always threatening orders.
Neither had choices. Those always had a right answer and a “your now dead” answer.
He wasn’t sure how to respond properly to real suggestions and choices.

“Sir Leo?” A grin twitched at his mouth. “Don’t think I’ve been knighted yet–and not likely ever to be–, and I’m definitely not a senior officer.” he laughed, amused despite Rory’s too serious expression.
“I’d be glad to have you with me. Let’s go argue with an ancient AC unit.”
He led the way out the door, being careful to match his pace to Rory’s uneven steps.

Rory walked beside Leo, trying to force the limp from his steps. His mind was slowly working over what Leo had said, and he risked a glance at the older boy. “Leo… what’s knighted?”

I was thinking up the elevator to the top floor and a empty office (possibly with a frustrated teacher who was trying to prepare their next lesson and got dropped on the head)?

“Knighted?” His eyebrows furrowed together. “It’s an archaic practice of dedicating elite soldiers called knights. A thousand years ago boys would train for years in hopes of becoming one. Today it’s still used in some countries on Sordes to honor someone who’s done something exceptional for the country, like save a princess’s life or whatever. Knights use Sir as their official title.” He let his gaze drift to the tangle of pipes covering the basement roof.
“I met a knight once. He got it by writing some three hundred line long poem about something or other. Thinnest, most absent minded man I ever saw.”
