@koshka That dancing sounds cool! I thought of Irish dance when you said his dancing was competitive. And I love that his water magic is part of it.
I used to take Irish dance lessons when I was little *cue nostalgic flashbacks of me being a clumsy child*
Have you drank water today?
February 25, 2025 at 6:06 pm #198484That sounds like an insane amount of fun. XD
My experience is just jumping around the house to Celtic music with my siblings.

Rax was excited when he heard Eddie’s response. “Great! Wonderful!” You could never see a smile as big on anyone’s face as on Rax’s. He was filled with joy, for he liked dancing, even though he had only danced formally once or twice, but that made him more excited that he would dance formally again. And to top it all off, the dance was today. Rax prayed Ben had something, which he did.
Rax turned to Ellie, “What about you, do you have a partner?”

Ball room? He’s seen something, a large sign on his way to school. But no, that had said Ball Pit. Surely they weren’t the same thing. How was one supposed to dance in a ball room?
Wildly. He could do that.
“Tonight. Oi, that is agreeable.”
Although he’s have to find this Room of Balls too. The misty whisp tightened around his finger.

“Great!” Eddie winked at Syph. “Now you just need to get yourself a girl.”
Rax turned to Ellie, “What about you, do you have a partner?”
She looked surprised. Her attempt to stay unnoticed by her classmates had failed quickly.
“Yes,” she said softly. “My friend Marcel.”

Not that dancing would have been good for him. He would have freaked out and killed something or run……… buts still. It’s the principle of the matter. *British sniff*

He had to what? He blinked at Eddie. A dark blue flush crept up his neck. Water droplets appeared and disappeared in the air around him.
“Oh. Guppies. For a dance? But I don’t know of any other spritelings to pair with. It could take an indefinite amount of time to even find someone who wouldn’t be—oh tadpoles— desperately, irrevocably, impossibly, to put it simply—incongruent.” he shrugged, the blue flush fading from his face. He let out a dismal sigh. “And for a dance of all things to be paired. I don’t suppose there will be fireworks?”
He pulled a thin pad of parchment from his sash, and checked the nib of his pen against the edge.

Fork the GorkFebruary 26, 2025 at 2:20 pm #198567@whalekeeper honestly I loved the worldbuilding, there was just one problem with it:
the fact that elves completely discount all human science. It doesn’t really make sense to me. As a person who’s very invested in science, I just can’t see how literally everything we come up with–every theory, every calculation–could be wrong. Don’t get me wrong, humans are wayyy off on a lot of stuff, but in the books it sometimes feels like the elves are saying “haha! Humans are so stupid! They can’t figure out how the world works and have no way of properly connecting to it!”
Like, we’ve literally seen atoms, or at least their effects. We’ve extensively studied stuff like light. But there are still tons of things we don’t understand–say, gravity, or magnetism–which could be something the elves have mastered, as in like “well, humans don’t understand it yet but that’s how it actually works.” Not “well, you don’t understand anything about anything our world has to offer.”
Not to mention that certain abilities kinda depend on the human interpretation of the thing manipulated by the ability. Vanishing for example would rely on human constructs–the idea that light can be bent, the concept that photons can pass through certain surfaces and reflect off others, etc.
Of course, it could just be that because the elves think they’re superior to humans they say that all human science is nonsense, even though that isn’t exactly the case, but if that’s what it is, I feel like the author could’ve made that a little more obvious.
Despite this, I feel like bottling fire and lightning and that kind of thing is still cool, on top of all the crazy compounds the elves make. Like in the case of the bottling stuff, maybe it’s an electrically charged glass that repels the energy of the captured bolt, whirlwind, light beam, etc., and then there’s a special hyperfluid inside (those exist) that preserves that energy so it can be stored for a long time.
And in terms of the insane compounds thing, maybe they’ve just mastered the elements (and have discovered new ones that humans don’t know)

February 26, 2025 at 2:27 pm #198571Other than that:
- I don’t hate the stereotypical four elements thing, nor do I dislike light and shadow being added to the list. Actually, the funny thing I realized was that it’s basically the states of matter:
–fire=plasma
–air=gas
–water=liquid
–earth=solid
so yeah there’s my take on that.
- mythical and extinct creatures being real and not like what we think? I like it much more than the “all science is bogus” thing, even though they’re the same concept. Paleontology is one of the fields in which we do get a lot of stuff wrong, so it’s okay.
- discrimination based on your powers/lack of them and prejudice if you’re a twin/triplet/etc.? Horrible, but at least it’s somewhat original.
