According to Goodreads, 50% of Unraveled consists of Keefe thought-monologuing about Sophie. It’s safe to say this is the main plot. KotLC is officially a fantasy romance.

February 22, 2025 at 6:12 pm #198319haha, well, I am a lover of well done death scenes. Especially if the characters and author is a Believer, otherwise it’s a little depressing.
hmmm, well, I just can’t stand cheesy rescue/escape scenes.
uh… let’s see.
Faramir. Don’t know if you’ve read LOTR, but his rescue and recovery makes sense. Gandalf saved him, and Pippin was there to get help, and Baragond (who was CUT OUT of the movie!!) was able to hold the men off until help could come.um, well, in one of the books I wrote the MC dies. In book two his “son” is about to die but is saved. Rather similar circumstances… except for one thing. In the first book, there was no rescue. In the second book everyone knew rescue was coming, and it was a race against time. All hope seems lost, but in the last moment rescue comes and that’s when you find out that the villains had already lost the war and were under order to release prisoners but were trying to off the MC at the last moment.
I had a character stabbed with a poisoned dagger once. The Villain said there was no antidote, and the hero would die. The villain was right. There was no antidote. But he thinks in turns of cure and poison, weapons and defense— what will help him here and now, right away, no matter who’s life is lost as long as he’s king at the end of the day.
the idea of nursing a wounded soy diet back to life, varying for him hour after hour, helping him drink, helping him breathe, fighting the fever, washing and dressing the wound over and over, draining the poison— none of this would enter his mind because he sees people has tools to be used for his gain. So when the one who loves the hero does all this and he survives, it makes sense.Put it this way. If you are going to break out of the unbreakable, you have to know the secret weakness that no one has been able to discover, and there has better be a good reason. If you are going to beat the unbeatable, it has to be because you really do have the skill or knowledge to tip the scale. I’m sick of “beginner’s luck” and “accidents” those are there because the author wants the drama and reaction of the reader thinking their favorite character is going to die, and then realizes they don’t know how to get the hero out. If the hero gets out, it MUST make sense. Leave clues—hide them if you want— but at the end of the day I want to look back and say “I see how he did it. Bravo!”
not feel cheated because my emotions were played with for no reason.does that make any sense?
Man is born for the fight, to be forged and molded into a sharper, finer, stronger image of God
February 22, 2025 at 6:39 pm #198324Oh goodness yes. XD
Leo
Soldier. Yes…and no. Another sigh caught in his throat.
“Yes, but no. I don’t really know what I’m doing here.” He leaned back against the couch. The floor felt cold through his work pants.
“I was apprenticed to Admiral S. Faltack at twelve years old as a novice engineer. Silvia’s always been smart, smarter than most people give her credit for. She got a place at a lab when she was just ten.” Leo smiled a little before it faded into a frown. “But I, um, made something, or didn’t share something, and then, what with Silvia’s research into Supplement and my military position, we sort of got ourselves charged with high treason. But we were already headed to Raí by the time they caught wind of it, so there’s been a warrant out for us. We spent about a year at the Paradise aerospace port before they caught up.”
“Then we found Quincy on Argentil and made that hornets nest mad, so now we’re hiding from both sides of the law.” He looked over at Rory and shrugged. “There’s the short of my life story to date. Pretty weird to think about really.”

Most People would have been taken aback. But not Rory. Leo’s story sounded pretty normal. In fact, better than what he’d always known.
but one thing snapped our attention him like the crack of a whip. “Wait a moment… Quincey isn’t related to you? I thought you said he was your brother!”Man is born for the fight, to be forged and molded into a sharper, finer, stronger image of God
February 22, 2025 at 6:56 pm #198326Leo
Leo chuckled and shook his head. “Do we look related? But I’m the one who pulled the little monkey from a shelled out hole, so I guess I have as much right to claim him as anyone else.”
He leaned back against the couch.

Fork the GorkFebruary 22, 2025 at 7:02 pm #198327Rory shrugged. “I don’t know what siblings are supposed to look like. I don’t even know if I have any of my own.” He shrugged again and picked out a few more screws. “Quincey is a fortunate boy,” he said, softly.

February 22, 2025 at 7:08 pm #198328Ugh. The series was good through book 6, but the romantic drama has kind of taken over, and I don’t think Shannon Messenger has any idea what she’s doing anymore.
I, for one, really like Roman numerals.
February 22, 2025 at 7:10 pm #198329@whalekeeper @theducktator yesss I love KOTLC’s worldbuilding (despite a few points on which I’m like “um, no, that totally breaks immersion, sorry”) but the romance is pretty much half the plot now if not most of it.
Not that I hate that, but I don’t love it either. I want them to just beat the bad guys already.
"When in doubt, eat cheese crackers."-me to my charries who don't even know about cheese crackers
February 22, 2025 at 7:15 pm #198330Uh, big brother mode just got activated.
Leo
Rory looked… lonely. Leo reached over and ruffled the kid’s hair, not stopping to think that he was probably too old for that. He needed a childhood. “Welp, now you’re stuck with me too, so I guess you’ll see how blessed Quincy is.”
He laughed and scooped up a handful of metal bits, sorting them into the pails Rory had assigned to each. Sure he should probably get to work on one of the work orders now piling up, but he also didn’t want to leave Rory alone in the basement. Liko could get stuff done, right? The fellow certainly had enough hands.

Exactly. I want it, but only as a subplot, not as the main thing.

February 22, 2025 at 7:29 pm #198332uh yeah! Poor kid needs it!
(I gotta work a Leo into his actual book.)he’s got enough hands! Pfft!
Rory
Rory smiled slightly. Sometimes Leo’s words completely flummox him, but Rory had learned to read tone and body language over words long ago. He wasn’t exactly sure what Leo meant, but he understood the tone.
“so… what do you need me to do after we finish this?”
Conversation wasn’t really a skill Rory possessed, but he didn’t want this to end. Everything felt safe. Like that building. What had Leo called it? A Church. Yes, the church was safe, Leo’s house was safe, Leo was safe. But how did they all connect?Man is born for the fight, to be forged and molded into a sharper, finer, stronger image of God

February 22, 2025 at 9:06 pm #198335In the second book everyone knew rescue was coming, and it was a race against time. All hope seems lost, but in the last moment rescue comes and that’s when you find out that the villains had already lost the war and were under order to release prisoners but were trying to off the MC at the last moment.
Oh, did you have a subplot POV on the side following the rescue? I’ve always enjoyed those when they’re done well, because I can feel the time crunch. And if not, how did you update the reader’s knowledge so it didn’t feel out of the blue? That last question seems to be the main challenge whenever I read books with this kind of thing. Usually there’s like, a literal series of messages (often magical, I’ve noticed, although your story probably doesn’t have that), or some periodic signal.
So when the one who loves the hero does all this and he survives, it makes sense.
Nice. Restoring a character back from near death is fun.
I have a character with a wound which becomes part of his magic ability, alerting him to his own energy level. But when he’s first wounded, it’s pretty ghastly. I’m not even sure how to write it because it’s such an uncanny physical mutation.
does that make any sense?
Yep, I get this for a lot of deaths. I don’t mind chance survivals if they lead to interesting plot progressions, though. Like if a character survives a shipwreck by being picked up by a wild dragon, and dropped onto a fantastical island. That’s a lot more fun than the realistic death ending. But it seems to be a case-by-case thing. It’s practically impossible to make up rules for this kind of stuff; only pointers for how to go where you want.

February 22, 2025 at 9:10 pm #198336I’m on book eight, if my memory serves me well. I decided there was such a nagging balance of potential and problems, that I wanted to re-world-build the elf world. If you ever get any ideas for the redesign, let me know.
