I love that boy more than either of you will ever know. I love him desperately. In fact, I only ever loved Prince Friedrich, Leon, and Julian as much as him. (Though I do really adore the MCs for CR)

it’s because I love him so much that terrible things happen. He is courageous and strong,(even though it doesn’t seem like it at the moment) and the evil men he’s around hate that. I can’t break the rules of the story just because I love a character. I hate it when authors do that.

Don’t worry, Rory is well loved.

That is precisely when worry is needed. The worst things happen to the best loved characters.

Same. KotLC used to be one of my favorite series, but there have been 9 books, the stakes are supposedly super high, and yet…we haven’t lost any of the main character team. Only two not that important side characters. *sigh* Just kill somebody already!

              Leo

“All sorts of things. Mostly worked on ships. Built one out of scrap material with Silvia. Took us three years. The other stuff.” He sighed. Looked over at the kid. Well, most people probably wouldn’t call him a kid. “I worked with energy deployment and shielding. I was one of the best.”

It wasn’t a boast, but it also wasn’t something he could be proud of. Doing well meant high stakes jobs, higher survalance, and, when the floor fell out, higher charges.

“But now I’m Leo Boltman. Mechanic and janitor at a fancy boarding school with seriously outdated plumbing and a faulty heating system.”

                Don’t. Get. Me. Started.
I am the person who is furious at the end of a book when my favorite character doesn’t die!! Why? Because the author cheated to save him! The mastermind villain makes a “mistake”. The unbreakable jail cell has a weakness no one who has been trying to break out for the last hundred years has discovered yet our hero just “stumbles upon it!”
                Ugh!

of you are going to save the character, HAVE IT MAKE SENSE!!

                okay, I’ll shut up now.

                  Rory

Rory stopped sorting the bolts and screws and looked up at Leo. “Why? What happened?” For some reason he had sensed something familiar in this young man. He pushed off the couch and slid to a sitting position on the floor next to Leo. “Ever since I first met you… you seemed to me like a soldier. What are you doing down here?” he lowered his voice and glanced toward the door. “Leo, are you running from someone?”

goodness. Opening up makes Rory able to speak up a little more boldly. 😂

I’ve been pretty curious since you’ve mentioned this frustration a few times. What kind of ‘save the character’ moment do you prefer? XD Or are you secretly a fan of main character deaths?

I predict a close death for Keefe, and maybe somebody like Alden will die at the end. Maybe Wylie. But no one super important will die; there’s no way Messenger will do something permanent to the group. 😂

Yeah. *sigh* I think Fitz ought to die. He only seems to exist for romantic drama at this point.

That’s true! Like in Mossflower, where the one mousethief just escapes. Hilarious yes, but dreadfully convenient. One can still save One’s character, but it needs to fit the rules.

Of course, to mix stuff up you can always make a master prison that has a weakness that both the good guys and the bad guys exploit. Like in Sir Dalton and the Shadow Heart where the cells don’t have doors. It’s used by the bad guys as another way to humiliate what’s left of the prisoner’s bravery because the truth is, they can’t get out on their own. Dalton learns this the hard way. Hence the mildly terrifying opening scene for the book.

Lol. And I just jump in talking about Knights and death ravens while the conversation is leaning toward intergalactic elves.  This is what makes KP what it is.

I personally hope Sophie becomes some important Keeper, with a cool job that she actually likes and is willing to be fully independent for, so she gets past her overly invest relationships. It won’t happen. But one can dream!

                              @elishavet-pidyon

I was just thinking about Mossflower. 😦 That’s what popped into my head when Ellette mentioned prison cells. I haven’t read it in many years, but is it possible the mousethief had better observation skills and experience, so it was easier to slip away? (Maybe I’m remembering all wrong, oh dear.)

Agreed. I do think she and Keefe are cute together though. I just wish it would stay a side plot.

If I remember right, he has long experience breaking out of jail, and so somehow lifts the bolt with a length of cord. Or something. I think your theory is entirely possible. It is the Mousethief, after all. XD

It’s been a while since I read it too.
