The û? Do you know which culture it comes from? Also, that’s epic you’re learning Hebrew!😃 I watched some beginners’ videos to learn the structure — in terms of it being an SVO language, like English. Unlike my main kingdom’s language, which is an SOV language, like Japanese.
I like the mix of cultures you’re using for Eirtan! I’ve never even heard of Kievan Rus. Where is it?
Yeah, the language of my desert kingdom, is Hebrew-based, and some of the marriage customs are Hebrew-based as well, along with some ancient Iranian marriage customs.
Among the musical instruments, ouds and Arabian drums are predominant.
In terms of the culture, it’s an odd mix of Jewish customs, made-up customs, and Muslim customs — by which I mean all the girls are expected to wear veils in public. Maybe. I’m still deciding whether my whole culture has to wear veils if they’re woman, or maybe only the Princess?
The architecture of Al’chatamet, the capital, is based on Jerusalem, Tashbaan from Narnia, and basically those old Persian cities that had the multiple levels. Al’chatamet has three levels: Upper City, Middle City, and Lower City. Each of these levels are divided into quarters, like Bazaar Quarter, Tanner’s Quarter, Silk Quarter, etc. At the very peak is the royal palace. The whole city is situated beside and around the biggest oasis in the desert — it’s practically a lake.
It is a merchant and trading city first and foremost — that’s why there’s so many quarters, for all the different artisans.
In terms of dance, I referenced several dances, including Iranian, Yemen, Oman, Iraqi, Turkish, etc. (I think. It was so long ago now I’ve kinda forgotten what specific dances I watched, from what cultures)
In terms of food, expect Eggplant to be the most perfected and preferred delicacy.
Hope you enjoyed this long ramble on the background of my culture, as much I as could remember off the top of my head!😅😊

That’s my wish to create.October 19, 2021 at 6:11 pm #106402@trahia-the-minstrel I do the same! You’re one of the ones on my Dragon Lore topic, so you’ll see when I post multitudinous facts about half-man, half-dragon cultures.

October 19, 2021 at 6:25 pm #106406Oh, oh, your names are lovely. Hebrew? My sister is learning Hebrew!
Your lines are great! I like Faeda, being short myself. And is Tyroll her older, or younger brother?

Fork the GorkOctober 19, 2021 at 6:38 pm #106408@keilah-h Thanks! I did see it, now you’re making me think I’ll have to try the Wings of Fire series😁 Also, it’s just cool that you’re writing Star Wars fan fic. I think that’s epic and awesome!😁
@koshka Thanks! That’s cool!- This reply was modified 3 years, 2 months ago by Trahia the Minstrel.

That’s my wish to create.October 19, 2021 at 6:42 pm #106410Oh, I love building cultures and hearing what other people have made!
Let’s see… I don’t know the ú sound, it might be Hebrew (I’m not very far in).
Keivan Rus is basically the name of a federation of Slavs in the 9th to the mid 13th century. The part I mixed in is mostly from the older northern groups. They were a nuisance to the Romans.
I love your desert culture, it sounds wonderful.

October 19, 2021 at 6:43 pm #106412@trahia-the-minstrel You’re welcome. I love writing Star Wars fanfics, especially dragon ones! And a word on Wings of Fire–the later books aren’t as good as the first five. Those are the best.

October 19, 2021 at 6:48 pm #106414I’ll keep that in mind😉 *Resolves to get first five books out of library*
Thanks! I never knew that, about the early Slav federation. That’s so neat you’re using it in your book!😃

That’s my wish to create.October 19, 2021 at 7:20 pm #106415Thanks! It’ll be interesting to watch play out.
Also, about your culture, Horse and His Boy was always a favorite in our house. I can hardly run across hot pavement without thinking about Tashbaan. I love that you’re including the oud, which I only discovered the other day. About the veils, I know very little except what one might find in early Christain Britain. There they were worn by married/older women and bare hair was a mark of youth/girlhood. (Not that that helps you any)
Anyway, it sounds so fun!

October 19, 2021 at 7:43 pm #106416*note: to clarify my ambiguous “letter”. I meant כ and ח. Both make a throaty sound.

October 19, 2021 at 8:17 pm #106417The Horse and His Boy is my favourite Narnia book😊.
Yeah, I haven’t learnt the Hebrew letters, but that ‘cha’ sound is really hard to make. Still, I like the feel it gives my language😁. Here’s a sample:
“Ûne li’hatevet Férījinar Sechol.”
(translation: I don’t speak Férījinarian (language))
“Ira? Hûsī hovet Ira?”
(translation: Mother? Where is Mother?”)
I think I may have botched the first one, cause I didn’t reference my work to know. But you get the general idea.😉
