You’re sister sounds like my best friend minus the broom 🤣 she totally glares at me when I mentioned killing off a character cuz I usually spoil everything to her (cuz who else can I spoil everything to?) 😂
She was real relieved when I decided not to kill of one of my charries in the current series I’m working on but instead injure them to near death, so that worked out, but yea it’s funny cuz I’ll mentioned it after telling her and she’ll give me daggers with her eyes! XD

That’s my wish to create.October 18, 2021 at 3:24 pm #106282Did you make up your names on your own, or research them? They sound amazing!

Fork the GorkOctober 18, 2021 at 3:50 pm #106296Thanks! @koshka
I make up my names, but based them on Spanish and Japanese pronunciation (the only two languages I’ve ever studied.) As a result, here’s a short list of some of my characters’ names:
Salvárdé, Méyárco, Iéto, Mérar, Shinarvé, Zarvéna, Yáléa, Lína, Riézon.
I use the Spanish rule that any time there’s an é with the flick over it, it make an Ay sound, like in day.
And I use the Japanese rule that I’s make an ee sound, like in bee.
So I guess I research language rules more than the actual names, which I just make up on the spot, generally. Thanks for asking😊

@elishavet-pidyon @joy-caroline @anatra23<333 Yup! 😀
Love the lines!!! Your character sounds like a very wise guy and a lot of fun. 🙂
October 18, 2021 at 9:16 pm #106334Poor Rubin ;-; will be missed.
In Korean, literally everything (almost,) is spelled solely based on the way it sounds. So, thankfully, I don’t encounter too many spelling errors of my own.
Random question, does Russian have any loan-words?BQ? I am unfamiliar with this.
Whoops, I meant college Korean text book. A big ‘ol English college book for people who speak English, to learn Korean. Again, challenging, but fun 🙂
October 18, 2021 at 9:23 pm #106338I’ve never considered combining languages to make names, that’s cool! Tho, with my simple brain, if my OC’s had names like that, they’d be forgotten in a heartbeat 😛
October 18, 2021 at 9:55 pm #106345@lydia-s — Thanks!
@anatra23 Thanks! Tbh, I didn’t really think about it much, I just made up the names lol😂 But when I was trying to figure out how to spell the names, I was listening to my older sister (who’s a linguist) talking about International Phonetic Alphabet’s pronunciation. She said in that, the vowel I generally makes an ‘ee’ sound, like for my character’s name ‘Iéto.’ The other one with the é I already knew from learning Spanish as a kid. (Hopefully my sister won’t get mad if I misquoted her — I think that’s what she said, lol😂.) So yeah. One of the drawbacks of my names is that not everyone knows IPA pronunciation or Japanese or Spanish peculiarities, so they don’t know how to pronounce it. I think I’ll have to put a pronunciation guide at the start of the book.😅The end of a story, a beautiful picture; a feeling of longing yet hope~
That’s my wish to create.October 18, 2021 at 11:48 pm #106361In Russian the words are ‘supposed’ to be spelled the way they sound, all except those thousands of exceptions… *sigh*. If you mean words from other languages, than yes.
BQ= Bible Quizzing. The lady I met is a quizzer Mom (her daughter is in Junior’s).
That makes more sense! I was thinking ‘Wow, she was doing what?’
That’s neat! I usually just look up names in whatever language I want and pick one that I like the meaning of, so not very creative…

Fork the GorkOctober 18, 2021 at 11:54 pm #106362At least he dies late in the book? Or perhaps that makes it worse. Yes, he will be missed, but Viktor needs to be who he was made to be, and Ruben wouldn’t want to go any other way.
@lydia-s I know this is random, but I didn’t realize you had read the Green Ember etc. What is your favorite character/lines? We love Helmer and Jo Shanks. And Heyward, how could I forget? They’re all such well written characters. You have listened to fears, child. Come, let me breathe on you... Are you brave again? -Aslan
October 19, 2021 at 7:56 am #106364Thanks for the pronunciation lesson 😀
Sadly, I have to say I don’t know much IPA… which makes it kinda hard to read English-to-Korean dictionaries. Yea… I should really learn.
Are you planning on publishing your book in the future?
Korean was literally designed so it could be written and spoken easily and logically, thank goodness for that. My bad spelling would’ve otherwise been infamous in two languages.
BQ… that makes sense now. Google couldn’t have helped with that one.
Yeahp, I’m not learning those college level Korean words yet XD.
Oh nooOoOoO! Late in the book?! Now I’m imma get too attached. Yes, sadly a death for another character’s development is sometimes necessary.
October 19, 2021 at 3:08 pm #106385@anatra23 Yes, I’m doing a round of beta reading for it now, and then I’ll probably do another couple of editing passes, maybe one more round of beta readers, before trying to pitch it to agents. It’s 180k words, though, so I’m gonna have to be creative and precise in order to sell them on it — YA fantasy isn’t normally that long😅
@koshka Your method of finding names probably results in way more cultural accuracy and the easier pronunciation.😊 I just choose to mix and mash and make up my own names cause I wanted my medieval fantasy country to have a different-ish kind of language from real life. I also have a desert kingdom, where the names are mostly like this: Shah Jubīrûk, Isûk, Asīra, Lady Itiaras, Al’chatamet(the name of the capital city). Most of my desert kingdom’s language is strongly based on Hebrew, with the ‘cha’s’ making that sort of throaty sound you hear in Hebrew. However the nomadic tribes who live in the desert have a language based on Egyptian — so, yeah. And I don’t know which language the û (oouh) sound came from, I think I remember hearing it in Gimli’s ‘Bûrak Khazad, Khazad-ai menû!’ In LOTR, and I just loved the sound.😂The end of a story, a beautiful picture; a feeling of longing yet hope~
That’s my wish to create.October 19, 2021 at 3:16 pm #106386@godlyfantasy12 Lol.😂 Yeah, I always spoil everything to both my little sister, my big sister, and my big brother — and then pester them with feedback on any new plot developments I’ve thought of.😂

That’s my wish to create.October 19, 2021 at 4:18 pm #106392@lydia-s mwahahahah well… let me pull something up out of my 1000 pages of organized chaos called a series XD
hahaah my charries sound insane out of context, but I think the lines do sum them up pretty well XD
and I love that line of yours, the shotgun one. Made me laugh out loud and startle my cousin XD

“You talk too much—and yes, it could get worse; the Tyrox could call its mate and they can catch you and eat you, Shorty! I’m too fast, and anyway, I don’t taste good, so I’ll be fine. Any last words? I’ll tell Mum and Dad you said goodbye,”
“Hey, why don’t I get a kiss on the cheek whenever I come home from working all day? I’m your brother! Come on, give me one.”
“But it’s so mushy! Roses everywhere and people taking walks and kissing…”

October 19, 2021 at 5:24 pm #106396Ok, so now I can’t contain myself. @trahia-the-minstrel, did you say your desert country is Hebrew influenced? (Note gleeful chewing of lip) I’m learning Hebrew. Also, Eirtan is a mix of Celtic, Norse, Kieven Rus and mid-east/isreali culture, so I’m a tad unduly excited. (By the by, that particular letter you mentioned is my personal antagonist.)
