Since this conversation with the queen seems doomed to failure, maybe the queen should have them go to the dinner once they get Ottoline back. Then she can explain what they have to do during the meal.

        Sounds good!!

If you pluck them, they explode. Goro.

          Ottoline

          He’s lying.

She lay there, frozen, terrified. He’s lying to me. Just when I feel safe, he’s going to hurt me again… Jraldath and Selena had tricked her before, she wasn’t going to fall for that again.

The tone of his voice was strange. Was he annoyed, mad, or kind? She couldn’t tell, and that scared her even more, when she couldn’t read people.

She felt his hand on her shoulder and she flinched.

“Can you please just stop crying? I’m not going to hurt you! We need to get back, before something worse does!”

          “No,” she whispered.

Couldn’t he see that she was fine on her own? She didn’t need anybody. Especially not some guy with a sword.

She wished everybody would just forget about her, let her drift away into the shadows, a forgotten nobody.

              Ellis

              She wouldn’t move. Ellis sighed.

”She’s awfully stubborn, isn’t she?” said Conviction aloud.

The girl looked around for the source of the voice, which didn’t seem to come from anywhere in particular.

”I told you to keep quiet,” Ellis told the sword, shoving it back into its sheathe.

                  Ottoline

“She’s awfully stubborn isn’t she?” she jumped as an unfamiliar voice echoed in her head.

“I told you to keep quiet!” the man yelled, putting his sword away. She felt herself relaxing a bit, with the sword put away and all, but she couldn’t trust him. Not yet.

“Please, leave me alone,” she whispered. “Don’t hurt me,” she said the last part so softly that he barely heard her.

She squeezed her eyes shut, willing him to listen.

But when she opened them, he was still there.

                    Ellis

”Look,” said Ellis, “let’s just go back. You can tell the queen your sorry and we’ll get this sorted out. I promise I won’t let her do anything to you.”

Ottoline has some trust issues, huh?

If I had ever learnt, I should have been a great proficient.

                        Ottoline

                        Promises.

A promise meant nothing to her. It was just empty words. She had been promised things before, all of them broken, shattered like broken glass, the shards leaving scars that haunted her to this day.

She didn’t know what came over her. But when she looked into his warm blue (?) eyes, she suddenly knew he wasn’t lying. He wouldn’t break his promise.

But she still didn’t trust him.

She slowly uncurled her trembling body, stood up, and began to walk as far apart from him as she could, holding her bow and arrows, ready to use at a moment’s notice.

Ottoline frowned. How could they be sure they weren’t lost? How did the man know they weren’t going in circles?

If only I had just gone back to my camp, never gone into the cabin in the first place, I wouldn’t be in this mess. Marcurious would be telling some dumb joke, Neveah would be making dinner… Dinner. That was the thought that kept her walking, as much as fear and doubt coursed through her veins, as much as she hated trusting him. I hope the queen’s a good cook.

                            Ellis

Finally, Ellis thought as she got up.

”One other thing,” he said, “can we not mention the talking sword? I don’t want to have to explain it to everyone.”

He paused. “We haven’t officially been introduced,” he said, “I’m Ellis.” He held out a hand.

                              Meanwhile….

                              Kari

“Well, this is fantastic.” Kari laughed sarcastically. Things kept getting crazier, but she knew she couldn’t lose her mind or they were doomed. Maybe she had already lost it, but in all cases, she needed to think rationally. “We all stumble into a house that traps us inside and tells us to have a party, and before the party’s even over we get transported to another realm where we now have to work together to kill a bunch of dragons so that we can go back home. And now two of our best warriors just made the queen mad and ran off. What a hot mess.”

“Yeah, we need to get Ottoline and Ellis back if we’re ever going to get anywhere,” Lane agreed.

“Maybe I should go find them,” Kari suggested. “I might be able to convince Ottoline to come back.”

“Well, if you’re going, I’m going, too,” Hedieh announced.  “You shouldn’t go by yourself. Not in a strange world with strange dangers.”

                                  Ottoline

He was asking her not to talk? Easy, she thought. She certainly wasn’t planning on making conversation.

Ellis held out his right hand, but she ignored it. He frowned, and continued walking. She shook her head. What did he expect? Did he think she was going to trust him just because of some empty words?

“Ottoline,” she spat out her name. He nodded.

“Nice to meet you, Ottoline,” he said it in a way that told her that he thought it was anything but nice.
