Her cheeks flushed red with embarrassment. Ellis probably thought she was a wimp. She couldn’t even pick up a wooden sword for goodness sake! Yet she couldn’t slow her racing heart, she couldn’t control the torrent of memories, images, sensations that never ceased.
“I’m s-sorry,” she clasped her hands to try to hide their trembling. It was no use, Ellis could see it from a mile away. “It’s just this thing with swords…” she couldn’t believe she was telling him this. But maybe she needed to tell him, so that he wouldn’t think she was “weak”. So that he would understand.
Ellis stood quietly, listening.
“My whole life, I was in a very bad place,” she looked at the ground, “I was beaten, tortured, experimented on, because of my race. There was no mercy. They separated me from my little brother,” she paused, “well, he wasn’t my brother, but he was like one to me.” she twisted her arm so Ellis could see the scar that carved its path from shoulder to wrist. “That’s why I don’t like swords,” she rolled up her pant leg to show him the one on her calf, “that too.” she hoped he would understand, that she wouldn’t have to go into detail. A tear trailed its way down her cheek. “I wasn’t mad at you, when you chased after me, you know,” she looked up at him, “I was afraid. It’s not the first time some guy with a sword has chased me.” she tried to smile, but it came out a sort of grimace.

There was an awkward silence.
”I’m…sorry,” said Ellis finally. “You don’t have to learn how to use a sword. But I do think it improves your chances of survival. And maybe it will help you not fear them. After all,” he smiled weakly. “Weapons are only as dangerous as the person who wields them. But I won’t make you. It’s your choice.”

“But I won’t make you. It’s your choice.”
Those words meant the world to Ottoline. She had a choice.
“I think I’m going to try,” she said. “I’m not going to be as good as you, but I’ll try not to think about…” her voice trailed off. “But I suppose a sword is going to be useful.”
“Are you sure?” Ellis said.
“If we go slowly, I should be okay,” she said the last part as more of a question. She really didn’t know. She crouched down and firmly grasped the hilt. For a moment she could still feel the razor sharp metal cutting through her skin and she felt lightheaded.
“You’re really pale,” Ellis observed, sounding concerned.
“Sorry,” she shook her head to clear the memories that had haunted her all of her life.

Okay, so I don’t know how to use a sword, let alone teach someone else to, let alone write that out, so we’re gonna have to skip some time. Does anyone want anything to happen in this scene still?
