Woah, a lot has happened. lol XD
Amir
Amir watched, his heart crumbling into pieces as he saw Ottoline cry. He wished he could do something, but at the moment, Hugo seemed to be comforting her instead.
But everything was interrupted by a shake of the house. And it started to speak…
After the house explained the masquerade party that was to come, there was a rumble of curious murmurs across the room.
But why did they have to go to the basement? Of all things?! What if it wasn’t as big as the house made it sound? What if it was small… really small?
“I guess we’ll head to the basement then,” someone said.
The others agreed and started looking around for the door.
Amir stayed out of the way, simply watching. Hopefully they wouldn’t find it. Because then he’d have to go down. If he didn’t, everyone would make fun of him.
“Hey guys I found something!”
Oh great.
Everyone bustled over to the door that Hugo was standing in front of. “You think this is it?”
“Might as well give it a try,” someone replied. Hugo turned the door knob, the door squeaking open.
Hugo lead the way into the basement, but Amir stayed behind the rest of the group. Everyone was already almost down the stairs, but Amir lingered, his foot hovering above the first step. Was there any light down there? Didn’t look like it.
“Amir, you coming?” A voice called out from below.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m c-coming,” Amir said, his voice cracking. There he was doing it again. Arsyn Dabir always called him out on his habit of talking fast when he was nervous. And often made fun of the fact that his voice cracked a lot, even at the age of eighteen. Amir swallowed hard and took the first step, pressing one eye closed.
He sucked in a breath as he slowly went down the dark stairway, his sweaty palm constantly slipping on the railing. The stairs creaked beneath his feet. A soft light glowed at the end of the staircase as he heard the others gasp.
Amir set his jaw, looking straight ahead and marching down the stairs. He could do this. He would do this.
But just as his foot finally hit the landing, a huge, black spider hung right in front of his face.
He swallowed a scream. Well, maybe I can’t do this.
He held as still as possible as the spider, unhurriedly spinning lower and lower, moved past his face. Amir took a step back, waiting for the spider to reach the ground.
But it never did.
There was only one choice. Amir swallowed hard, pressed his lips together, and made a frantic dash past and around the spider and his web. As he turned the corner, Amir didn’t expect anything to be there.
With his luck, there was.
To be exact, it was a knight’s armor, a painting, a vase that probably costed more than his whole wardrobe, and a pile of weird-looking shoes.
Somehow, Amir managed to tumble into and break all of them, except the pile of shoes, which cushioned his fall. Sort of.
And I thought I was past my clumsy stage.
Yeah, guys, Amir is like afraid of everything. 😂 Specifically heights, spiders, bees, and smalls spaces. 🤣

Hugo
Ottolines story was horrible, making Hugos seem simple in comparison. She had been through so much, for so long.
“You didn’t deserve that. No one would.” He said, a bit choked up.
Ottoline looked at the floor. He lost control and grabbed her shoulders. “Look at me.” He said sharply, she did.
“They lied to you. You-you are the best thing that ever happened to me, and you’re not worthless. To me, you mean the world.”
Ottoline started to cry again.
“Did I say something wrong?” His eyes looked concerned.
“No,” she whispered. “You said everything right.” He nodded and they sat together in silence.
And then the house began to shake.
Hugo swore loudly and jumped up when the floor began to act like ocean waves under his feet.
Then a voice boomed through the house. “Hello, new residents of this beautiful riverfront cabin. Excuse me, I’m flattering myself. “Who is this?”, you may ask?” A loud voice echoes from the walls, which rattle in tune. “I am the supposed owner of this property, which a few of you have been seeking. Or more of… I am the house. Yes, rather strange indeed!”
Hugo stared at Lane, who was frozen in place, eyes wide by the door.
‘Why doesn’t he open it?’ Hugo thought, but the voice continued.
“You may find the door to be locked! Yes yes, this won’t be easy for any of you. A series of challenges will await those who would like to leave… which I should assume a few of you will. The first of which… will be a masquerade party. Everyone who eventually wants to leave… must participate. You will find everything you could want for a party in the many rooms… maybe check the basement if the house has seemed… small so far. You will find that to be far from the truth.”
The shaking calmed down in the house, but everyones legs were still shaking.
“A masquerade party?” Amir said, completely bewildered. “Why?”
“Maybe they’re torturing us,” Hugo joked, “what could be worse than dressing up and dancing with girls?” He laughed, seeming to have made a full recovery.
“Well then, let’s start looking for the basement ,” someone said.
Everyone agreed and began to look for the door, which was strange. When he walked inside, it was a small room and now that he thought about it, it kept getting bigger and bigger.Everyone fanned out, and began to open every door they saw.
“Here? No, that’s a restroom.”
“This looks promising… dang, broom closet.”“Here’s a bedroom. How did I not see that before?”
“Coat closet.”
“Here’s a staircase?”
On and on they went, searching for the basement. Hugo walked over to a fancy, wooden door with a gold handle and a golden design spreading across the door.
“Hey guys I found something!” He called, fingering the handle.
At once everyone came over.
He grasped the knob and pulled, to his amazement the door opened with ease and a cold wind blew over him.
Hugo led the way into the basement, with everyone behind him, Ottoline, Amir, Lane, Kari, Kaine and David. They all followed him into the darkness.
“Anyone got a light?” Kari called out,
“Here’s one!” Lane said, flicking a switch. At once the whole room was bathed in a golden glow. It looked like a vintage theater. The lights were golden balls suspended above mirrors, the red carpet was plush and clean, exactly the opposite of what you would expect in a moist basement. There were costumes and makeup and jewelry, practically everything you could want.
“That’s strange,” Amir commented from the floor, “these clothes, this rack here. It’s all my size.”
Ottoline gasped, “These! These are mine!” She fingered a lovely blue dress.
“Oh great.” Hugo and Lane said at the same time, they looked at each other and laughed, both were holding a suit and tie.
“A box of masks!” Kari gasped, “for a masquerade ball. Look how pretty this one is.” She began to pull masks out of the box and try them on.
It looks like the party was about to start.

Kari
“Are you okay, Amir?” Kari asked, looking at the shattered armor and the boy sprawled in the midst of it. She wanted to laugh, but poor Amir looked so embarrassed that she bit her tongue.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” he muttered, picking himself up. “I hope that wasn’t expensive.”
Kari turned back to the clothes, eyeing a silky lavender gown that appeared to be the right length for her.
“Is there a changing room around here somewhere?” she asked, picking up the mask she’d chosen a few minutes ago.
“There are dressing rooms over here,” Hugo boomed from the other side of the basement.
“Great.” Kari made her way around all the clothes and entered one of the dressing rooms, locking the door behind her. It was a nice room, already supplied with makeup and hair products on a table next to a mirror.
Now if I can figure out how to get into this dress without ripping it…

Amir
Amir quickly hopped up out of the pile of shoes, bouncing on one foot for a moment as he regained his balance. He pasted on a goofy grin. “I’m fine,” he said with a chortle.
Thankfully, nobody really cared or payed attention to him for very long. But it was because everyone’s attention was diverted by the racks of clothes in the room.
Amir fingered the odd clothing on the rack in front of him. “Hm,” he commented to himself. If he remembered right, this outfit was simply called a suit. And it was for special occasions. In this case, a masquerade ball.
Well, if he was to every escape from here, then he might as well participate. So he grabbed a suit and a pair of shoes and went to try it on.
Either tomorrow or Monday, I might add in another character… Amir’s date for the party. 🥰

Hey guys…
I’m going to be entirely inactive at 9:30 pm, and I won’t be back on until October 4th…. Lane can just tag along in whatever happens during this role-play or you guys can just pretend he isn’t there until I come back (I don’t really mind whatever)…. So yeah… just thought I’d let you all know…

Ottoline
Her hands shook as she fingered the delicate blue fabric. This is for me? She wondered. What kind of person do they think I am? She could never wear that, she decided. This was too beautiful a dress for someone like her. She ran a hand through her tangled hair. I’m so ugly, this will make me look stupid. Everyone else grabbed their clothes and vanished into the dressing rooms, but Ottoline stood there dumbly, just staring at the dress.
“Aren’t you going to put it on?” Ottoline jumped and whirled around to face Hugo, clad in suit and tie. He changes clothes fast, she stared, incredulous.
“I can’t,” she bit her lip.
“Why not?” Hugo asked.
“Just-because,” Worthless, ugly, stupid girl! Jraldath’s words echoed in her head, and tears pricked her eyes. “I’m not-I can’t-I’ll look stupid!”
“You? Look stupid?” Hugo laughed. “Just try it, on, you’ll look great!” he smiled kindly. “And do you want to get out of here or not?”
“I guess….” she gingerly took the dress off the hanger, terrified that if she touched it wrong it would crumble into dust, or something like that.
“Go on,” Hugo gently nudged her in the direction of the dressing room.
“Alright,” she nodded, sucking in a breath.
“I’ll be upstairs,” he told her, and with that, he was gone.
She stepped into the dressing room, and closed and locked the door behind her. Turning her back to the mirror to avoid catching sight of her reflection, she slipped out of her clothes and put on the dress. She sighed in relief as she found that the dress had long sleeves, and the hem of the skirt touched the floor. She summoned her courage and dared to turn around and look in the mirror.
She reeled with shock.
The dress perfectly complimented all her features, and fit her like a glove. Tears blurred her vision. “I don’t deserve a dress like this,” she whispered.
And then she saw it. Her hair. It was a mess, tangled and matted. She found a brush on the vanity and dragged it through her hair. And then a thought smacked her full force. If this was a party, a ball, she should look nice. But she didn’t know how to do anything with her hair….how was she supposed to use the makeup? Maybe Kari would know, she thought. Even though their conversations were always tense and strange, Ottoline was too tired-and desperate-to care. Timidly opening her door and slipping out, she went to the dressing room that she had seen Kari enter a few minutes ago. She took a deep breath. It’s just Kari, she reassured herself. She’s nice, not mean, and she’ll probably be glad to help.
And so she knocked.
The door opened, to reveal Kari. Her dress was breathtaking, and seemed to be made just for her.
“Ottoline?” she seemed surprised.
“Um-sorry,” she said shyly, “I was just wondering…do you know how to do hair? Or makeup?” Kari nodded. And then came the hardest question. “Could you do mine? I’m sorry, it’s just that I don’t know how…” she looked at the floor in shame.

Kari
Kari was surprised to see Ottoline when she opened the door, and even more surprised when Ottoline asked if Kari could do her hair and makeup. But Ottoline seemed timid now, and her bow and arrow were nowhere in sight, so Kari opened the door wider.
“Sure, come on in,” she said. Ottoline took a hesitant step in, then another. Kari shut the door again, a little uneasy about being alone in a dressing room with a stranger who had pointed a weapon at her an hour earlier.
Don’t think about the bow and arrow, Kari, she told herself. She picked up a hairbrush from the dressing table.
“Do you want to brush your hair first?” she asked. “When it’s not so tangly, I can put it in a French braid.”
Ottoline meekly took the brush, and Kari worked on her own makeup while Ottoline pulled the brush through the knots in her hair. The girls remained silent, neither of them sure what to say to the other. Finally, all the knots were out of Ottoline’s hair, and Kari had put the finishing touches on her makeup.
“You can sit here in front of the mirror, and I’ll braid your hair,” she said. Ottoline perched stiffly on the stool, scarcely looking at the mirror. Kari moved behind her and began parting Ottoline’s hair.
“Your hair is really pretty, you know,” she said. Ottoline didn’t reply, but when Kari glanced at her in the mirror, she seemed to be blinking back tears. Compassion filled Kari’s heart. What had this girl been through? All the bravado of earlier seemed only to have been a facade to guard a wounded heart underneath. The walls had come down when Ottoline cried with Hugo a little earlier, but she was still on the defense, protecting her heart by locking people out. Kari saw this, because she had lived it. But how could she convince Ottoline that she wasn’t going to hurt her?
