LOLLL Soldier is something special.
Why can’t Gabriel leave the island? Are there crazy storms that make it impossible to sail away? Or is it the demon monsters that get in the way?
The island is in a state of isolationism that started 200 years ago because of the rise of the monsters. So yeah, the monsters are the reason. I am considering putting in sea monsters (still thinking on how to do that without breaking a few world rules and such), but also the water does get much more tumultuous a few miles out from shore, and the islanders aren’t permitted to make any boats to withstand the waters that far out. The island faces being wiped out by a race of humanoids on the nearest continent to them if a single monster escapes, and since they don’t know how the monsters are created, it’s safer just to cut contact and be self-sufficient.
I’m still working it fully out. It’s been a side project mostly.
Lucy: “Sometimes I ask the worker boys why they like their dates. They always say ‘because she’s sweet’ or ‘because she’s smokin’. Is Lillian sweet and smokin’?”
Gabriel: “Of course she’s sweet, but…do all the girls from your world smoke or are on fire? What do you mean by smokin’?”

😛 Many of the people living around Lucy are young men who work in the factories or the fields, and she sometimes talks with them when they’re in the soup kitchens. I still haven’t decided how different the Outer Fields teenage culture is from the more populated city areas.

They aren’t going to survive long without that mysterious Protector, I’m guessing.
I mean, obviously they have soldiers and guards, but yes, most of the soldiers are just young men who do the work because the pay is actually decent, but otherwise obviously would rather not fight monsters XD. The Protector is a delegation not recognized by the government who’s job is not only to rescue the people, but also to study monsters. Instead of just fighting them like a soldier would, a Protector is meant to learn every type of monster, every strategy, every venom, every poison, every antidote. They are meant to study behaviors and take notes on them. All in hopes of not only saving lives, but finding a way to stop the monsters forever.
Hopefully this makes sense. My brain is a jumbled mess XD.

Oohhh. I didn’t know that about the Protector role. So it really is about passing down the knowledge from previous Protectors, not just becoming another fighter after the last one dies.

Yes. After a few decades, a Protector either becomes to old or too wounded to fight (we shall hope it’s the former for Gabriel) anymore, and that’s when they find their successor. They stay with that successor until the end of their lives as a mentor and companion. After all, the life of a Protector can be a lonely one as you aren’t supposed to let many people close.
I think if Gabriel doesn’t find the way to defeat the monsters (which he’s the main character, so probably yes, but let’s assume he isn’t a favorite of mine) he will probably age out of being the Protector. He puts his body through so much now that eventually it’ll just give up. Plus, he honestly doesn’t have the will power to keep going forever. He’s strong, but part of his “dark hour” in the story (as it is inside my head right now) is wanting to quit being the Protector because “is the world really worth saving” when they turn on the one who’s been trying to help them for years?
I can’t really blame him for thinking so. I mean, he’s been poisoned, shredded, exhausted, and almost killed so many times and yet that means nothing in a moment because of marks he was born with and a power he barely understands.

It started because the Protector isn’t under the government, and when the First Protector appeared, the government were rightfully wary of civilians trying to mess with strange monsters.
Then it continued as partly tradition and partly that when the Protector becomes the people’s hero, it’s best to keep the personal life behind the mask so that people don’t ruin it.
Then it also works for Gabriel because of his birthmarks.
Random fact that I just pulled from the gutter of my mind: In the early concepts of Gabriel’s story, the news reported that they thought the new Protector was a girl…Gabriel, upon hearing this, was positively both offended and amused.
The setting back then was more futuristic, but I decided that didn’t fit as well as his current one. Gabriel also had a bit more fire in his personality then.

Maybe the Protector role will be passed down to a girl someday, so I can see why people would speculate about that. But that probably made Gabriel question his appearance more than once.

Oh yes. The hair, and the way he covers up so much made them think that, plus originally he had a more slender frame.
Now in his story as it is currently, he works with a stone mason, so he doesn’t have lithe muscle anymore.
If any of my guy charries were to be mistaken for a girl, honestly it’d be Baron rn. He’s very slender, and when his hair is long, it’s absolutely gorgeous!

I can see that. It’s funny to sometimes realize that a character is androgynous from someone else’s perspective. I have a few who are rather androgynous, but that’s because I have a bad habit of prioritizing funky character designs over clarity.
I love guy character designs with long hair. Marcel has long hair at some point, but he looks much more masculine in comparison to Baron.
