Sooooooooo, I just wrote this scene in my WIP with Leon/Riker…😏
“Jakob and Joshua will lead the two kids from the East, bringing them to the church through the backdoor at exactly midnight. While they do that, Jezyk, Leo, and Reuben will be blowing up the Luftwaffe airfield to the north of the city thirty minutes before Jakob and Joshua get the two kids to the church.”
Riker slightly shifted, bending over the map of the city in the Violet Iris base in the basement of Ezekiel’s church.
“I and Wolfgang will bring the mother and father from the West, steering clear of the people heading for the airfield and will bring the mother and father to the church exactly twenty minutes after midnight. Ezekiel will stay here at the church and make sure everything’s ready for the family and make sure everything goes according to plan. Any questions or suggestions?”
Jezyk raised an eyebrow. “So, after we blow it up…we get out of there?”
Riker nodded. “As fast as possible. You may need to go east or west and go from that direction back into the city, as there will be people coming from the south to check on the airfield.”
“It will be fun, you’ll see.” Reuben said with a wink.
Jezyk raised an eyebrow. “Fun? What do you mean?”
Leo laughed and draped an arm around his younger, though taller, brother’s shoulders. “Rebel here likes blowing things up.”
Reuben laughed and gave Jezyk a wink. “Sure do. Probably one of the best things about being a part of the Violet Iris’.”
Jezyk smiled, slightly lowering his chin.
A new member of the Violet Iris’, everyone was doing their best to make him feel welcome.
Riker was unsure, at first, about bringing Jezyk in. He was only sixteen after all. But Jezyk felt regret about doing what he was doing and wanted to help people, same as Riker.
Besides, Wolfgang was only two years older.
Joshua smiled. “You’re really good at this planning, Riker.”
Ezekiel smiled and nodded in agreement, tucking a strand of his curly blonde hair behind his ear. “He’s fit in well to his new position within the Violet Iris’. Fin would be very proud.”
Riker smiled gently.
It still hurt, salt on a fresh wound.
But it would heal over eventually.
Besides, he was doing this for the innocent people and for Fin. He wouldn’t fail. He couldn’t fail.
Leo gently folded up the map. “This mission is crucial, same as all the others. We have to stay alert, ready, and prepared for anything that may come our way.”
Riker glanced at the painting of a violet iris that hung on the wall in between two of the wooden, full bookshelves. Drawn, painted, and calligraphed by Reuben, it held the creed Ezekiel had chosen for the Violet Iris resistance group.
For Freedom.
For Truth.
For Purity.
For God.
“We only have a couple minutes until eleven. We need to get moving soon.” Joshua whispered, checking the watch on his wrist.
“We need to get everyone and everything we need.” Wolfgang added.
Jakob nodded; jaw set in grim determination. “Let’s do this.”
Ezekiel smiled and nodded. “I’ll make sure everything is ready for the family, make sure everything runs smoothly, and I’ll keep an eye on the time. Good luck, everyone,” a bit of solemnness broke through his smile; brimmed in his blue eyes, “and may God help us all.”
Riker slipped around the shadows, the mother and father of the two children Jakob and Joshua were taking to the church right behind him, with Wolfgang following close behind.
Riker glanced around the corner of a bakery. “How much longer?”
“We’re ten minutes after midnight,” Wolfgang smiled gently, “so we have ten more minutes.”
“Still on time.” Riker turned to the man and woman. “Come along. We’re almost there.”
He slunk forward, carefully avoiding all of the places where he knew guards were often placed to keep an eye on the city.
Of course, most would be distracted by the blazing Luftwaffe airfield, but Riker could never be too careful, especially with things like rescuing Jews.
Riker led the man and woman forward; Wolfgang followed right behind.
Footsteps pounded against the cobblestone.
Riker drew his Luger pistol. “Get behind me.”
A figure jumped out of the shadows, a pistol drawn, aimed at Riker. Moonlight shining above him, the masculine figure’s clothing was evident. A Luftwaffe officer dress uniform, gray and finely pressed. The man’s wavy brown hair was unkempt without a uniform cap covering it. “What are you doing out so late at night?”
“Depends on who you ask.” Riker shrugged, placed in between the officer and the man and woman.
“The Luftwaffe airfield was blown up and is now on fire. Shouldn’t you be tending to that?”
“Shouldn’t you? Need I remind you, Lieutenant, who you’re talking to?” Riker stepped slightly forward to put himself in broad moonlight.
The young man’s gaze flitted to the double-lightning bolt like symbol on Riker’s uniform, and his face slightly paled.
Riker nodded. “I’m on important business. I need you to move.”
The officer began to slowly lower his pistol, when his green eyes focused on the man and woman behind Riker. His eyes widened. “Jews? What are you doing with-?”
Riker moved fast, quickly taking the man down, throwing them both to the cobblestone street. He took the pistol out of the officer’s grip and tossed it aside. He pinned the man to the ground, one of his knees on the man’s stomach.
The officer stared up at him blankly, face pale, knowing the power Riker held as an Officer of the SS. “…What are you doing?”
“Rescuing people that are going to be killed along with their kids if I don’t get them somewhere safe.”
“Jews aren’t-“
“I thought so too. The rumors of the camps? They’re true.”
The officer blinked a couple times. “…I want to see.”
Riker quickly shook his head. “No, you don’t. I need you to stay out of the way, and don’t tell a soul about this.”
“I-“
“Swear to me. I don’t want to have to hurt you.”
“Not like anyone would care.”
The officer spoke so softly, so…painfully. Riker saw himself in the man’s green eyes.
“Riker, we need to move. We’re running-“ Wolfgang trailed off; his blue-green eyes widened.
The officer glanced at him and blinked several more times. “Wolfgang!?”
“Dietrich, what are you-!?”
“You know each other?”
Wolfgang nodded. “He-he’s one of my stepbrothers…the younger one.”
Dietrich glanced up at Riker again. “…Are they really going to be killed because they’re Jews?”
Riker nodded. “Yes.”
Dietrich paused for a long moment…then slowly nodded. “I won’t tell a soul about any of this.”
“You swear?”
“I swear.”
Riker slowly got off of him and offered his hand.
Dietrich took his hand and stood with his help.
Riker handed him his pistol. “Don’t tell anyone about this. We can’t afford that.”
“I won’t,” Dietrich glanced at Wolfgang, “and good luck, all of you.”
He slipped away into the darkness.
Riker let out a deep breath.
Maybe he shouldn’t have let him go…but there was sincerity in his voice.
Besides, Riker didn’t want to have to kill anyone, no matter what side they were on.
Riker turned to face his companions. “Come on, let’s get to the church.”

Reuben!!! I didn’t know he liked blowing things up! Riker is so nice 😭 and poor wolfgang… I have a feeling Dietrich is going to let something slip.
"And so I left this world just as I had entered it. Confused."

@mineralizedwritings It’s funny, Reuben is, like, the last person we would expect to love blowing things up 😂😂 But he loves it more than a lot of things, other than painting, of course 😉
Yesss, my baby is so kind, even to people who are against him!! 🥹❤️
Welllllll, I guess we’ll see if Dietrich slips or not 😏
