June 14, 2023 at 12:03 pm #147705@smiley Wow, that’s cool! (Y’know, all of the romance in my stories comes from other people’s stories. I have no experience with it myself and don’t really want any, but I love ships in stories for some reason…..)

Poor Riker though, having lost what I assume is one of his only friends.

Please, enjoy!!! 🥰🥰
(Ma boi Leon…love him y’all 🥺🥹❤️ And ISAIAH!? Like, y’all…I love him more than words could ever express XD 🥰😍)
The shooting shook him more than he would ever care to admit.
It was true…it was the man who had been previously working the camp. Many of the fellow men in the camp claimed they knew him to be the man who was rescuing Jews and other innocent people.
But how was it possible?
Leon furiously shoveled rock, ignoring his still stinging chest, ignoring his thoughts, ignoring the men working around him.
The rumors couldn’t be true.
But otherwise…why would they shoot the high-rank officer?
But why would a high-rank officer of the SS, with his rank and his high standing in Nazi Germany, ever try to rescue Jews?
It just didn’t add up.
Isaiah’s recent words came back.
But Leon wasn’t blinded by hatred and prejudice.
He had a right to hate them. They imprisoned him here. They killed his wife. They took all of his belongings. They took all of his freedom. They took all of his dignity.
The only thing they hadn’t taken was his humanity because Leon was clinging to that with all the strength he had left.
The guard on duty laughed when one of the older men working stumbled.
Fury boiled in Leon’s chest, but there was nothing he could do.
And that made him angrier than anything.
Footsteps sounded and voices rose through the air. Another guard or officer relieving the laughing man of his duty.
The guard walked off, still chuckling, and kicked the old man that had stumbled with his jackboot, completely knocking him to the hard ground.
Leon ached to go help him, but he couldn’t.
The officer that had relieved the vile, laughing man crouched down beside the old man, whispering.
Pretending, likely.
Some guards and officers did that, pretending to be kind to get the prisoners’ trust, then they turned into monsters like all the others. Though most didn’t even bother and just always acted like the monsters they were.
The officer helped the old man, Benjamin, to his feet and helped him sit down on the ground. The man nodded gratefully.
The officer turned.
Riker.
Leon looked away, turning his attention back to his shoveling.
He heard Yosef breathing heavy beside him…and Yosef’s work began to slow.
Isaiah turned to his son with a raised eyebrow and a worried frown, turning to his sixteen-year-old son. “Yosef, son, what’s wrong?”
“I-I couldn’t sleep last night, and I c-couldn’t eat this morning…and this heat and-and work…Abba, I feel ill…” Yosef stumbled, and Isaiah barely caught him before he hit the ground.
Leon dropped his shovel and helped Isaiah set Yosef on the ground a few feet away, next to the old man.
Isaiah stroked Yosef’s cheeks. “Yosef, Yosef…speak to me.”
“I-I’m still here, Abba…but I-I feel like I-I might pass out…”
What were they going to do?
“Here, he needs some water.”
Without seemingly even thinking about it, Isaiah took the canteen of water from Riker.
Leon gently tipped Yosef’s head back, and Isaiah poured some water into his son’s mouth.
Yosef swallowed, and a bit more life seemed to fill his eyes. He gently reached for the canteen. “May I have more, Abba…?”
Isaiah smiled and handed Yosef the canteen. “Just don’t drink so much that you get sick.”
Yosef nodded and began drinking more water.
Isaiah stood back up completely and faced Riker. “Thank you.”
Leon faced Riker, waiting for his reply. Riker gently shook his head. “Don’t thank me. Yosef, take a break for a little while.”
Leon picked back up his shovel. “With Yosef and Benjamin both taking a rest…we may never finish as much work as we’re supposed to.”
“It may just be a little less rock, but won’t it be fine?”
Leon plunged the shovel into the rocks with a thud and turned to Riker, eyes piercing. “You understand nothing about this place, do you!?”
Isaiah’s eyes were much softer. “Leon, shh, he can’t understand everything. Riker, if we don’t meet our quota, the entire group of men may be beaten, whipped, whatever the guards feel like doing once the day is over…but I’m sure we can make the quota, even without Yosef and Benjamin’s help.”
“Like that will happen without their help.” Leon retorted with a scoff, turning away again, shoveling a large shovelful of rock. He coughed, and his chest stung.
Yes, still not fully cured yet.
Isaiah turned back to his shoveling. “Thank you, Riker…for letting Benjamin and Yosef both take a break.”
Riker didn’t reply.
Leon watched him glance between Benjamin and Yosef, Leon and Isaiah, and the pile of rocks, his gaze flitting between each thing over and over again.
Riker removed his uniform cap, set it on the hard ground beside Yosef and Benjamin, and began unbuttoning his black uniform jacket.
“Riker…what are you doing?” Isaiah asked softly, one eyebrow raised.
“If Yosef and Benjamin can’t work, I’ll take their place.” Riker replied softly, removing his uniform jacket, and also laying it, neatly, on the ground, leaving only his white, button-up undershirt. He rolled up his sleeves to his elbows, revealing a muscular build.
Leon’s eyes narrowed. “Why would you do that?”
Riker picked up Yosef’s shovel. “I wouldn’t exactly want anyone to get beaten…besides, I need a distraction.”
Something Leon couldn’t quite pinpoint passed in Riker’s dark blue eyes.
Regret? Guilt? Greif?
Something else Leon didn’t quite know or understand?
Leon shoveled another shovelful of rock. “Just try to keep up.”
“Leon,” Isaiah chided, “leave the poor man alone.”
“He’s the poor man!? What about us, Isaiah!? We’re the ones that are being starved, we’re the ones that have had everything taken from us! What would he know about anything we’ve been through!?”
“Leon, everyone goes through pain, you know that.”
“He understands nothing, Isaiah,” Leon snarled, “especially about this. He’s a murderer, Isaiah. He killed many innocent people, including my wife.”
He glanced at Riker, who was merely shoveling in silence beside him.
The man seemed to not want to even speak a word.
Leon raised an eyebrow. “Aren’t you going to defend yourself?”
Riker slowly faced him, keeping the shovel steady with one hand, slicking back his wavy, dark brown hair with his other hand. “Why would I? You’re right.”
“I thought you’re a German. Aren’t you superior to us Jews?”
“If superior means killing people that are considered “less-than”, then yes. Otherwise, no.”
Isaiah nodded. “God created everyone equal. There is no difference between us in his eyes. Though Jews are his chosen people, that doesn’t mean God looks down on anyone else. He loves all of us.”
Leon shoveled more rock. “Then why do they think they’re superior?”
“They have an excuse to think highly about themselves…and a way to claim that what they’re doing is right,” Riker bit his lip, “but none of this can ever be justified by anything or anyone.”
Riker shoveled another shovelful of rock, and his wedding ring glinted in the sunlight.
Isaiah seemed to notice, and he smiled gently. “I didn’t know you were married.”
Riker’s gaze fell to his wedding ring, and he shrugged. “I don’t think I’ve ever told you.”
Isaiah smiled. “You seem like you’d be an amazing husband and father, if you have kids.”
“I do…I have three, with a fourth on the way.”
“Oh, congratulations.”
Leon glanced between the two men.
How could Isaiah just talk to Riker so nonchalantly…so easily?
“Abba, I finished the water and shared some with Benjamin too…uhm, Riker, is this yours?”
Riker turned around and faced Yosef with a smile. He set down the shovel and walked over to Yosef, crouching down in front of him, gently taking the canteen.
He spoke to Yosef and Benjamin in quiet whispers, still wearing a smile…but it seemed…fake.
Not like he was pretending to be kind just to get them to trust him, no. It almost seemed as if he was forcing a smile…for them.
Did he actually care?
It seemed so…impossible.
Isaiah watched Riker, deep, unmerited concern pooling in his dark brown eyes. “…Lord, help him…he’s a deeply broken man, I can see it in his eyes…and only you know how broken he truly is. Help him, Lord.”
Isaiah’s prayer was so heartfelt…as if he felt Riker’s pain.
A broken man…how could Riker be broken?
And if he was, what kind of pain had Riker been through?
No, Leon couldn’t feel pity for him…he wouldn’t.
Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.”
No.
Leon couldn’t forgive Riker.
Never.
But as he watched Riker speak gently to Yosef and Benjamin, smiling for their sakes, acting as if they were equal or worth even more than him…all he could think about were Isaiah’s words from that mid-morning.
Was Leon missing so many things because he was blinded by hatred and prejudice?
