Lin replied to the topic Have you ever written a sad ending to a story? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 9 months ago
@kathleenramm A lot. Well, not sure. Most of my endings are bittersweet; in fact, I can’t think of a single fully happy ending. But there was one story (that I think you’ve read?) where every single character loses everything and there’s no way to recover that, and it was the result of all their own choices throughout the story.
Still one of my…[Read more]

Have you ever written a sad ending to a story? Why?
I have written quite a few bitter-sweet endings, but I have yet to write a tragic one. However the novel I’m writing now, looks to be going in that “tragic ending” direction, but I’m pretty sure it’ll end up more as a bitter-sweet ending like most of my stories. For me the ending is always…[Read more]

Hi! Welcome to KP!
I just gotta say first off that Miyanna is a really pretty name. Kinda sounds like the name of the lead female protagonist of a fantasy novel, haha.
I love music and acting as well! Particularly music, as I’ve only been in one play, but both can be so exciting despite being so different.
If you…[Read more]

Kathleen replied to the topic Have you ever written a story that took place in your hometown? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 9 months ago
You should totally try sometime, it’s really fun.
As for a twist, we made the cities post-apocalyptic. We of course did it for the story, but the post-apocalyptic vibe ended up really fitting with the cities we grew up in, particularly Cincinnati lol.
Who knew writing about a broken and corrupted version of a place you used to live…[Read more]

@kathleenramm I’ve had some places based off of places near where I live, though I never mention them by name. I used to mention street names though, haha.
One time I did read a book set in my hometown (it was never explicitly stated but I figured it out using context clues) and hoo boi that was weird.

Have you ever written a story that took place in your hometown?
This is a question I am curious about because a couple of my siblings and I are currently writing a novel that takes place in the cities we grew up in, (Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dublin Ohio). And it has kinda confirmed my belief that as fun as writing about totally new places,…[Read more]

Kathleen replied to the topic Themes! and Messages! and Plots!? OH, MY!! in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 10 months ago
Yes! You illustrated my point perfectly. Delving into the core of the theme (such as Good Vs Evil) through questions demonstrated throughout the book, opens up many different but related themes that expands on the original theme’s message.
Themes are really cool in that way. I really like how you explained it in your post!

It seems like you already nailed down your theme with your description of what the book is about.
It’s ultimately a journey about finding one’s family and embracing yourself.
Found family and embracing yourself seems like the main two themes of your story.
And about your question on multiple themes, pretty much every story has mul…[Read more]

@maryg3 Hey, Mary!! From what I’ve gathered about the bit you shared, it seems your book’s overarching main focal theme is about finding your place in life. (Did I get it right? 😂) So for my personal opinion, I think it’s really great to have more than one message in a story!!! I mean, we as people are so complex and learn so many different…[Read more]

This might not be the best advice by a long shot, but you seem like you’re REALLY in love with the idea of bringing them back. Like I can just feel how much you love this idea and your excitement to write it. And I guess for me, that’s the best reason to follow through with the idea! It’s your story at the end of the day, and if…[Read more]
