Daeus replied to the topic Chapters in a First Draft in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 3 months ago
@naomijackson I don’t think it’s best to just insert chapter breaks wherever there is a cliffhanger. You want chapters to be fairly similar in length with just a handfull of short and long ones thrown in there. I believe writing chapter breaks in the first draft helps me craft nice chapter breaks and more cliffhangers because I’m planning for the…[Read more]

@GracieGirl Coolness.
YES I love Mere Christianity. *flails* I’m glad you’re reading it. Have you read The Screwtape Letters too?
I’m reading a true WWII rescue account called The Forgotten 500 right now. It’s pretty cool. In the fiction realm, one of the things I’ve read recently which I liked quite a bit was the Mysterious Benedict Society…[Read more] -

@Aviantrail Welcome to KP! That’s cool you’re Captain America. He’s an ISFJ too. 😉 And also, *whispers* you definitely should read more of the Scarlet Pimpernel books.

@rochellaine I also like Devan a lot. Thanks for the input. (Oh, and Larik is a great name, by the way, @daughteroftheking, but I don’t feel like it suits my character. 😉 )

@rochellaine I’ve never thought about this before. I’ve always just had the chapter breaks right from the start. I assumed that’s how everyone did it. I suppose it’s not a big deal, but it does work well for me how I do it. It helps me plan chapter breaks well and gives me an added sense of completion when I finish a chapter.

@rochellaine That’s a very good point. *smacks face*
He is fifteen years old. He is mischievous, bold, and reckless, often does things without thinking. He can fight his own battles, but tries to do too much on his own (he’s slightly arrogant).
Appearance: windswept brown hair, dull green eyes, average height.

Okay, so this isn’t exactly on topic, but I’m trying to name a guy character and need some ideas. What I have so far: Arian, Bryson, Corban, Devan, Crew
I’m having such a hard time choosing. So, please either vote on which of the above names you like best or use your wonderfully creative mi…[Read more]

Daeus replied to the topic Kicking Off the Plot in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 3 months ago
@mnvalentine It depends a bit on what you consider “action”. If action is battles and desperate plots, no novel actually needs those and you can bring them in at any point in your story. If action to you means confrontation, which I think is a good synonym, perhaps you do need the action to come in earlier, though it depends on how long your book…[Read more]

Emma Flournoy replied to the topic Cliche? in the forum Fantasy 8 years, 3 months ago
@WarrioroftheRealm Well, looks like I’m contradicting everyone else on this topic, but… my first thought was yes, absolutely. 😛 It’s undoubtedly cliche. There are ALWAYS exceptions, which several of the worthy responders above have pointed out, but in general, just thinking of that kind of scene, yes, I find it cliche.
