Comedy is actually a very fun thing to analyze. 🙂
Another thing, you’d probably get this because you’re in a big family like me, is interactions you actually observe. In a big family, I’ve been able to really realize the full humor of all people’s personalities just by themselves. Characters simply bouncing off each other can be unbelievably…[Read more] -

Actually, one of my favorite authors wrote a fantasy trilogy like that. The Ascendance Trilogy by Jennifer A Nielsen. Just what you described. Very real world-ish, just in a made up land.

Cool! Back just in time for my favorite sort of topic. 🙂
Seeing on the point of exaggeration here, I must humbly object.
Exaggeration can be great and funny, but I’d say the place for it is prose or commentary within the writing itself (dialog is a bit tricky, but it depends on the character). An excess of it can really kill the humor and is more…[Read more] -

The system of power thing could work, but I’d say that’s treading on dangerous ground. In the bible, there are the outright miracles, true. But usually the prophet or person seeking help prays to God, gets direct instructions and follows them. There aren’t any incantations or wand-waving and nothing that closely resembles the magic we see in a lot…[Read more]

Hey, Kate!
So *cough* you requested to know where I stand on magic-y stuff. Going in, I just want to say I understand where you are coming from and by no means am trying to insult anyone. *looks around* everybody clear on that? ‘kay.
Now, I see your example of a lightbulb at the beginning of the intro here. Point taken, but God did not take a…[Read more] -

My method is putting a bit of myself in pretty much all of my characters. There’s one who looks like me, one who talks like me, one who has some of my habits or expressions… it varies.
Jean and Cobalt are a sort of split of how I act in different situations. -

Our family just read Storybound by Marissa Burt and it was… gah, spoilers, but it was really really good. Make sure to have the sequel on hand, though. The first one ends on a cliffhanger. 😛
Only issue was good guys using magic, and I wasn’t really all the comfortable with that. -

Its a common sister dynamic. I sometimes wear some *ahem* interesting things out. But my little sister is usually the one I have to convince out of crazy outfits. 😉
I’m a cloak and medieval belt person. She’s got the elf hat and poncho going. -

I still have my first book that I’ve never finished, so I wouldn’t be one to talk about never abandoning a book.
You could maybe finish it sort of tongue-in-cheek humor, if it’s the kind of story that would work with. Other than that, just figure out where you want to go, and if it still doesn’t seem to be working, have Hope help you outline it.…[Read more] -

(Ah… I see what you’re doing here. I’ll try to work this out.)
Quinn: There was a certain captain that I knew that was something like you… in mannerisms, really. The look isn’t too much the same.
His grudge wasn’t with men, though. It was against his God.
It looks like at least you have made a turn for the better. I’m sad to say the fellow I…[Read more] -
Rosey Mucklestone started the topic Report Ending in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 12 months ago
So I recently read a book that used a certain kind of ending. This ending ends the story pretty much right after the action stops and then goes into a sort of report on what happened to the characters afterwards.
Like this:
Billy: Recovered from his head wound ands went back to happily live with his family.
Hannah: Went on to secure a job as a…[Read more] -

As far as naming places go, I’ve got a few ones from the book I’m writing at the moment.
Most noteably:
The Fat Spot Bakery
The Experimental Substance Coalition (a degree in Mad Science required to join)
and a small town named Nowhere. 🙂
Not inns, but they were still fun to name. - Load More
Thanks so much! I almost didn’t submit that one— but I’m glad I did. 😀
