I agree that I don’t understand the not reading Harry Potter thing especially with Marvel which in Wanda Vision there is a literal Salem Witch and the Necronomicon (look this up but be cautioned it pertains to Lovecraft Horror) Also the magic words are literally just Latin words but with some letter changed. In addition in Harry Pot…[Read more]

Thanks for your support
I got it working It turns out the battery in the key is almost dead so you kind of have to hold it right next to the start button to make it start
(I guess my time helping out the build team during robotics actually is useful (I normally do programming)

the thing is when you think about it most of the elf powers are not that original and the magic system is not complicated. Also the elves in Tolkien do have biases just in different ways.

@starofthenorth
Im not saying that breaking rules are okay just that if you read books in that genre you should prepare for that kind of thing to show up -
Folith-Feolin replied to the topic The Keeper of the Lost Cities in the forum Book Discussions 1 year, 11 months ago
Also Harry Potter increased the use of this trope tremendously within the fantasy school genre

@arien
Kids breaking rules is basically standard in all books where kids go to fantasy schools.Also It is a pretty standard topic in ya fiction (although at its worst kotlc is on the very low end of the YA maturity scale (I hardly classify it ya and neither does my local library)

I can agree. It does steal concepts from a lot of other stories. Also most of the school stuff is taken from Harry Potter.

I did read 7 8 and 8.5 whenever 8.5 came out 🤔 I just don’t know if I can convince myself to read 9 now (ironically for the opposite reason of the op) as I just came off of finishing the poppy war series and the Crowfall series (both series are Grimdarks that are crazy intense for lack of better word choice) and I’m a bit sca…[Read more]

Based off of how you like keeper of the lost cities and partially off your WIP might I recommend the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson

okay weird and unpopular opinion here
I thought KOTLC was a bit boring in the end.
It was an okay series until book six but then it got a bit predictable and relative and I felt the characters were never really in danger (common lengthy series problems)
As for the intensity I personally felt that it was intense but not that…[Read more]

so for about the 20 lashes punishment…
(as your first chapter seemed to be told from the 1st person pov I’m going to assume that your WIP is in 1st person (I’m also assuming your WIP is a multinarrative story (meaning it is told from the point of view of multiple characters))
If you don’t want your punishment to be gory you have a few…[Read more]

Naming characters is hard I totally get the thing where you don’t want to actually show your sibling the name of something you came up with because they might not like it that’s happened to me before as well.

Oh also I would recommend checking out Weird Al Yankovic he basically just makes parodies of stuff but especially I would check out his white and nerdy song if you consider yourself a nerdy person you will most likely get a kick out of it

If you really like Tolkien songs I would highly recommend clamavi de Profundis as that’s basically all they make
Also Dragon Age: Inquisition (it is a video game (and I have also never played it) has some good music with words (I have not listened to the entire soundtrack but Enchanter and Fall of the Magister are some fun…[Read more]
