Both. It depends on the subject. I go hard on subjects I’ve run through my mind over and over again until I’m sure that this is the way. Soft on subjects I don’t understand or don’t want the reader to focus on because it’s not the main point.

Maybe, but I find a completed magic system more satisfying than this. It’s just personal preference, but it’s not one of the top things I would choose to spend my time on for a story. That doesn’t mean I won’t ever try it, but I have a lot of things to work on.

I could make it so that the type of mass stays the same, so if you draw mass from the ground, you just become heavier, but if you draw it from an animal or something, you could draw out muscle mass.

The problem I see with that is that as long as you are touching the planet, you can just draw mass up to that limit whenever you want.

I definitely want keep the implants in the realm of magic rather than sci-fi. I don’t really have an explanation for how they work. In my system, the users need some sort of artificial implants in their body to use mass-shifting, and they can only shift mass into the parts of their body that have implants. That’s obviously not a huge difference, but it’s something.
