Mark Kamibaya replied to the topic Why Paolini works (or doesn't) in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years ago
And this shows why Paolini seems a bit cliche in the story.
Copied off of Wikipedia:
Paolini’s literary inspirations include the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, E. R. Eddison as well as the epic poem Beowulf.[4] Paolini said that Eragon was “specifically inspired” by Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher, by Bruce Coville.[10] Other literary influences…[Read more]

That diagnosis would align well with my past symptoms. I do find myself paying attention to the story structure and themes a bit more than character dichotomy and relationship ties.

Whaat? I like I See Fire just the way it is. And, yes, Emma. I view the Last Goodbye the only redeemable element of the Battle of the Five Armies. Whatever . . . opinions opinions. Sometimes I make a playlist of all the Lord of the Rings end credits songs (in order from worst to best) and just let the memories flow . . .
6.…[Read more]

I have a love-hate relationship with fantasy so consider this an outsider’s view. Also, last time I read Eragon was five years ago (12 yrs. old). And I haven’t read your comments so . . .
I hated it. No, I didn’t. Not the books. The movie. And rightly so.
As far as the books go. I read Eragon. I was obsessed with it, but, by the end of the book…[Read more]

I totally agree with you that that is just plain ridiculous. My example was very over the top and exaggerated. A realistic version of this would merely be the modern convention of writing he/she in place of just he or just she. The he/she thing is just tedious to read throughout any work of writing. Another real example would be…[Read more]

Ooh, soundtracks! I loove the How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack (literally nobody hates it, though). And personally I like The Last Goodbye better than Edge of Night but whatever. I keep on hearing about this Beyond the Mask thing and I feel so left out 🙁
Some of my favorite…[Read more]

@dragon-snapper (this is a quickie cuz I’m running short on time. I’ll be back . . . 🙂 )
I’ve written a few scripts (for the stage) and reading movie scripts is a favorite hobby of mine. That’s about all the qualifications I have. So here goes . . .
First, learn the format. Scripts have a specific format (stage and movie have different…[Read more]

@winter-rose Clearplay sounds good. Even though you’re in the minority (everybody else is like: Vidangel!), Clearplay sounds like a great option.

I think one of the scariest things about being a writer is that we can easily sin in our minds. We’ve come up with millions of different scenarios for our stories and some of those scenarios aren’t exactly healthy.

Mark Kamibaya replied to the topic Villain Reveal in the forum Fantasy 8 years ago
First, a question: Why exactly do the heroes have to meet the villain?
My problem was that the characters never meet the villain until the end. I read somewhere that that makes for a weaker villain. That’s it.
So I thought of doing something like what Captain America: The First Avenger did. Where there were people who were…[Read more]

I have the greatest dumb idea! You could like have a sort of rating scale for people on this forum based on how helpful they are. Like if you were helpful to me I could like vote for you. The helpfulness of the person (by votes or happy faces or reputation or whatever. Like Michael Stanton could have 1000 happy faces because he’s…[Read more]

I had the same problem with my story. It’s a little different but whatever. My first thought was legends and tales. Obviously, the guy’s super powerful and way up there so I assume that there’d be legends about him. That way they would know who he is. They don’t have to meet him face to face, do they? Maybe I’m just not getting…[Read more]

@emma-flournoy Okay so you really made me wonder whether or not to see Braveheart. I heard that it’s a great story but it does seem to have a lot of issues. About feminism: I hate Leia. I dislike the Star Wars movies but Leia especially. And I love Eowyn. She’s boss. So I totally get your point. However, I am a feminist. Not the crazy type that…[Read more]

@sarah-h I think you like movies about serious issues. And that’s good, I guess. You’ve mentioned movies about abortion, human trafficking, and school shootings. Wow.
Anyway, as far as historical movies go the Great Escape is one of the great World War II movies. At least in my opinion. It’s about a group of POWs escaping a German concentration…[Read more]
