@kathleenramm They can be. Thank you! Yeah, I feel the same way. The ending would be a complete FLOP if that didn’t happen. But with that ending, it’s so much more heartbreaking… I think I might actually cry while writing that one XD
EXACTLY. It’s so true. This is the reason why I HATE the deux ex machina trope!!!!!! The author is like “okay,…[Read more]

People said that I should use tree sap instead of tar and feathers.
Even though it was a fictional comedy, and I was like 8.
I’m still salty.

This poem makes me think of a particular person in my life. Our relationship has been really complicated and recently some terrible things have happened causing me to only be able to have shallow conversations with them despite me knowing them my entire life. I have so many things I desperately want to ask them and tell them, but…[Read more]

Yeah, heavy themes can be really hard to write well.
But I do really like the ending of your story with the hero scarifying himself at the end. It makes the theme hit so much harder. I barely know anything about your story, but I can see how the theme and character arc might feel half-hearted without him sacrificing himself…[Read more]

Favorite time period? Hmmm… Probably the ancient time period. I definitely would never want to live in that time, but there are so many cool things to learn (and steal for writing purposes) from.
What’s something from history that’s given you a memorable story idea?
Well, I guess I usually come off as pretty quite, introverted,…[Read more]

That’s really interesting! I don’t think I’ve ever experienced that.
I’m not sure if you want any tips on ways to maybe help you be more critical of writing, but here’s some thoughts I had that might help.
Sometimes when I’m reading a book and want to use it as a way to improve my own writing, I keep a notebook with me as I read. On…[Read more]

@sparrowhawke Haha, yup. And knowing me, I’ll probably end up with ANOTHER trilogy in the mix at some point.
Thanks! I write mostly about faeries and humans, since those are the main two races in the book. But within the category of “faeries” there are elves, gnomes, dwarves, sprites, pixies, naiads, dryads, half-blood/hybrid faeries that are a…[Read more]

@calidris I don’t think so. Was it bad or good?

@calidris Is tangerine a book? I’ve never heard of it.

@elfwing I mean, I used to read bad books too lol. And then I started writing, and I didn’t read anything but manga and classics, so when I finally went around to reading other stuff again, I was more like, “what is this thing I’m reading.” I guess writing has trained me to look for mistakes more, and also one of my sister’s hobbies is roasting…[Read more]

@elfwing Nope… that’s never happened to me before! XD I have a tendency to slam down my book and yell at it whenever there are problems. XD
-
Lin replied to the topic Reading in the forum General Writing Discussions 4 years, 7 months ago
@elfwing Oh, for me, I’m the opposite. Problems always stick out to me, but usually I stay quiet about them because I feel like they aren’t something that the writer can change easily (like style, the overall plot, etc.) If it’s typos I will though.

@keilah-h Ehh… not usually my cup of tea, but I’ve read the first Wings of Fire book. Not my fave thing in the world but it was good.

@sparrowhawke *oh shoot i didn’t mean to type mana on the summary for THBoH XD it’s called aera, just clarifying 🙂
Also, aera IS NOT magic. It is power (for lack of a better word) granted to the faerie races by God so that they can protect themselves, heal, etc. It’s just their natural God-given defense like a porcupine has quills and a bear…[Read more]

Percy Jackson was actually the book that got me into reading!
And I’m with you on the History subject. For me I think it really depends on the history book and whether or not they focus more on the people or on dates and basic events. When I started reading history that focused more on the actual people and their lives I started…[Read more]

I’ll definitely will be checking those out!
That’s so interesting! 1st person POV has always been my favorite and still is, haha. What books changed your mind on first person POV?
Yeah, I had the exact same experience with books I had to read that were part of a school curriculum. Still to this day they…[Read more]
