Well, let’s see if I can be a tad more constructive, though daydreaming can certainly do a lot. 😉
I would say the first thing to establish about a world is where it came from— and since we’re Christian writers, the answer to that question will probably always be ‘From the creator’. Our God figure. The next thing is to establish the people’s…[Read more]

@kate-flournoy In all honesty, it was probably more fun than helpful, but you highlighted the huge importance of setting in constructing plot, which I normally think of as less important.
So basically, I just need 20hrs to daydream. Hmm. I think I can handle that.

Here I am, finally @Daeus! I’ve been drooling over this topic all morning. Permission to rant!!!!!!! It doesn’t get any better than this!!!!!!!
Oh yeah, first things first. Did I say Enlightenment? *drops head wearily in hand, rubs face with rigid fingers* I did, didn’t I? No excuse for that— an apology will have to do. 😛 I meant during the…[Read more]

Aw cum on @kate-flournoy, that was just getting good.
By the way, even though this has nothing to do with the subject, you said
if the religion is anything like Roman Catholicism during the Enlightenment arts will be very much frowned upon.
I thought the roman catholic church was always highly icon oriented. *whimper random cute animal face…[Read more]

Perhaps the largest factor is what is the purpose of the torture scene. If it is for historical purposes or if it is the culmination of all the struggles your protagonist has been facing, I would say go into more of the details. If it is for setting the character of the villain or keeping your protagonist from reaching his immediate goal, I would…[Read more]

Oh, and by the way @hope— nauseousness would actually be nausea… 😉

Yikes— I don’t blame him so much anymore, @hope! 😛
But you’re right— that scene is very well handled. Another good way to do it. Just go quickly— you don’t have to linger over it. Of course, if it was an interrogation it would have to be broken up with dialogue and so would take a little longer, but you can still go fairly quickly over the…[Read more] -

Oh wow, I missed this topic when it was created! Thanks so much for starting it, @levipierpont! Sorry to be so late, but it’s a little more difficult to find new topics with the forum rearranged as it has been. 😉
So, world-building. This is one of my absolute worst pet peeves, so bear with me as I rant. The first thing is cultures— an amazing…[Read more]

Igh… tricky question. For me, I usually don’t have the stomach to go any further than the beginning of the scene before I cut and pick up after it’s done. I’m not setting that up as a standard— by no means! But that’s about all I as a writer can take. 😛
But I would say if you’re going to take us through the whole scene (I did that once,…[Read more] -

Is that even Irish?
Something like that.

Kate Flournoy replied to the topic My First Book Cover in the forum Art 10 years, 8 months ago
The girl and the capsule she’s in are well done @watersnail— take it from one artist to another. And an extraordinarily picky artist at that… But you could definitely stand to work on the background and the font. Just give it more depth— I would say add color to the background behind the steam, preferably dark tones— deep brownish reds,…[Read more]

The cover makes me curious about what happens, so that’s a plus. The art is good, but the font, background, and general design have a lackluster effect. Personally, the cover would not make me want to read it, but I think with a professional redesign the artwork would be greatly complemented. My guess would be that the cover art style would appeal…[Read more]

Seems like you did a great job. The only thing I’m not sure I understand is what “Fell doom of calm” means.
There’s three line where I felt you should cut a syllable. I would take off the “the”s from the last two lines and “unbound by the sword” would be better with one less syllable though at the moment I don’t have any particularly good alternatives.

The rhythm and rhyme are absolutely beautiful— exceptional work, @hope. The only line I’m not sure about is ‘Falling from air’. It seems to have too few syllables. I would try something like ‘Abides in the air’.
And as far as I can tell, it fits very well with the story. Very well indeed. 🙂

I haven’t seen Megamind, but I have seen Over the Hedge, and I totally get what you’re saying @writefury. Delaying anything for too long will turn me off— development in relationships, development in situations, etc.— like if they’re just going on and on and on and literally getting NOWHERE I start to get tired.
