For those who may need to know; my characters will be back at the school in the morning (or as soon as is safe for them. I do agree that these agent creeps need to be put in their place)

          Don’t worry. XD

          Leo

His eyebrows shot up. A car? That helped the fight scene make a lot more sense, but-

Mechanical injuries. He blinked, grimaced, and slipped off his helmet.

          “Yes ma’am. I’ll do what I can.”

He slipped through the door, softly closing it behind him. All was quiet. For a few moments, Leo let the calm silence of the place sweep over him and ease the adrenaline pounding through his blood. A sigh slipped out.

Golden light from the setting sun filled the western windows, turning the pews into warm gold. Leo smiled, scanning the place for Rory.

“Rory? Kid?” His boots clumped on the hardwood floor.

There. Collapsed beneath the Good Shepherd window. Leo slipped around the last pews and dropped to one knee beside the boy. His helmet clinked as it hit the floor.

“Rory. Thank God, you’re here.” Leo brushed dark hair out of the boy’s face, noting bruises and scarlet smears. His throat tightened. “Oh, Rory. Kid.”

              Leo

Here we are. The apartment rose up on the right just as the lorry slowed down. Leo came to his feet with the rolling stop, one hand on the back wall to steady himself. He scooped Quincy back up into his shoulder and reached for Silvia. “Come on, Sis.”

They shuffled down the aisle and out the door along with about half the other passengers. Leo waited on the sidewalk for the crowd to disperse before heading for the apartment stairs.

Silvia stumbled. Leo reached for her elbow just as another girl caught her.

“Thanks, miss.” Leo shifted Quincy to his other shoulder. And froze.

Squealing tires had overtaken the pounding feet in his ear. A muffled cry. Staggered footsteps. Other voices.

Dear God. Cover him with your wings.

Leo set Quincy down, already scanning the street for the best way back. “Sis, I’ve got to go.”

She nodded and tried to smile. “I’ve a key.”

              “Good. Be safe.”

And he was off, pulling his helmet out of his backpack as he ran. Clicking it in place, he dodged an elderly couple and vaulted over a parked car.

“Locate 14.” He ordered, rounding a corner and coming in sight of the last trolly stop. A line of glowing numbers filtered in the periphery of his visor. A moment later location cordinance flashed into sight. Earpiece 14 was found. Leo turned up an alley. “Navigate.”

The series of numbers was replaced by a target highlighting a fire escape. He caught the edge and flipped himself up onto the rusting iron stairs. They led him to the roof where another box and target sent him running for a neighboring office complex.

The sound in his ear suddenly crackled and was replaced by an eery silence. Great blue stars. Please let Rory have done that.

He followed the target boxes with a sinking stomach and a longer stride.

              ***

Crushed. Leo looked up from his ruined tech with a grim glint in his eyes. Shattered glass, twisted, blood spatters, tire marks all marked the street behind him as the step of that crash and fight. He walked past an unconscious agent, ignoring the urge to kick him.

Rory had been here, as had the masked lady and an unknown number of those creeps. Where is he now, Lord? I’m kind of running out of options.

He rounded a corner and broke into a run mid stride. The church door looked none the worse for wear, unlike the woman sitting on it’s steps. Leo flicked up his visor.

“Where is – are you alright?”

Yes, this is absolutely still a thing. In fact, we have an unfinished chapter…that should have been finished ages ago…

But does that mean I need snowballed again? I already have no clue how many snowballs I’ve got.

                      So…where is Rory? I confused.

                      Leo

The pounding feet morphed into a gasping scuffle. Leo clenched his jaw, trying to sort out the sounds.

A muted voice. Mask lady? A door. A few footsteps. More sounds he didn’t want to identify. He grimaced.

A loud smack reverberated over the com unit, then more pounding feet.

Leo groaned. “Blue stars, kid. What are you doing?”

                      “Lelo?”

He blinked, seeing the bus again and two huge brown eyes staring up at him. Quincy looked on the verge of tears, the necklace edging back into his mouth.

Silvia’s face was white, her hands clenched loosely in her lap. Leo gave a small smile.

“Chin up, sis. We’re almost home.” He put an arm around her shoulders. “I’ll get you a good cup of tea once we’re there.”

                      “And Rory?”

“I’ll find him, Lord willing.” Somehow. Wherever the kid had got to. Those footsteps in his ear had changed to a rather…alarming pattern. Just don’t fall kid. Please. He sighed, and watched for the next bus stop.

Okay y’all, battle plan. Leo is going to be getting off at this next stop with Silvia and Quincy. Those two definitely have had all the violence/stress they can handle, so I’m sending them into the apartment (although Silvia is seriously traumatized RN and is probably not going to respond well to separation, but whatever). Leo can set out to go find Rory (who is seriously scaring Leoron right now). He is accepting help.

Also, please say Barnes is alright. I like her.

                            Leo

And just like that, the lady was gone. Leo looked down at Quincy. Sighed. And retrieved the necklace from the five year old’s curious mouth.

“Play with it, don’t eat it. I thought you were past the ‘everything is edible’ stage.”

Quincy squinted at the shiny thing wrapped around his fingers. “Tastes funny.”

“I… didn’t need to know that.” Leo sighed and trailed his finger his through Quincy’s downy fluff. He felt more than heard Silvia’s worried mutter. The footsteps and gasping breaths still pounded in his ear.

His spine twinged. Shoulders tensed. That something was back.

Great. They were being watched again.

                              Oh boy indeed.

                              Leo

He knew a second before Quincy landed in his lap that something was about to blow.

The kid was about to bolt. And he had no idea where he was going.

Leo should have kept hold on his arm.

Then Rory was rapidly vanishing down the lorry, leaving Leo with a five year old, his little sister in a bloodstained skirt, and a strange woman he had no clue what to do with. The bus doors closed.

                              Dear God in heaven.

He blinked. Opened the com channel with a tap on his wrist. He could hear Rory’s steady gasping and pounding feet in his ear.

A sharp tug on his shirt forced Leo to look down. Quincy stared up at him, confusion gathering in his wide brown eyes.

                              “Where’s Rorror gone?”

Leo smoothed back the downy blonde hair and sighed. “I – I don’t know Monkey.”

His eyes slid closed as he listened to those pounding feet.

                              What do I do now?

                                Leo

His gaze flickered to the woman, then to Rory, the gears in his head spinning in a blur. He moved.

But not to run and jump from the bus. His hand shot out to lock on Rory’s arm and anchor the kid in place.

“She’s not an Agent.” But not necessarily a friend, despite her soft words. Just the fact that she knew their names didn’t feel great- but she wasn’t an agent. And she’d called him Leo, not Cam, his radio name that the Agents had overheard.

Not that she couldn’t have seen that name while searching school papers. His eyes narrowed. He glanced at her card.

Then his breath eased out. He let go of Rory’s arm. Lowered his voice.

“Plus, I sure don’t feel up to jumping from a moving bus. What do you mean, Ma’am?”

                                  Leo

For a moment he let himself relax into the lorry’s bench. Let his head rest against the back wall as the whole thing bounced and shuddered down the road. Closed his eyes.

But only for a moment. That nagging something twitched again, sending a chill down his spine. His eyes flickered open, his shoulders tensed.

Eyes. He felt eyes. Or rather, a thousand tiny things about the piece of the word he sat in had ticked off that alarm bell in his head. A quick scan of the bus came up empty, but that only meant their tail was smart enough not to openly start at them.

He forced himself to relax back onto the bench.

Rory had taken notice of something. Leo caught to keep his face neutral, bored even, as he followed the kids gaze.

A picture book? Sure it was a nicer book than he’s ever have dreamed of having as a kid, but why would that-

Oh. His eyes softened. Rory watching the toy as if he’s never seen one before. He probably hadn’t.

But surely he’s had something to play with. Something to let himself be a kid while still a child. Or maybe he hadn’t. Maybe that time of wonder and exploration had been too short for the kid made to be far too old for his age.

Leo blinked and focused on the bus again, even as he sighed over another stolen childhood.
